I think Johnny was as conservative as they come:

Here's a snippet from a Washington Times article about him:

He was a rebel in a rebel's world, though. Johnny Ramone was a fiercely Republican-voting, NRA-supporting musician in a milieu that is remarkable for its embrace of all things left.

Johnny went worldwide public with his partisanship in 2002, when the Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the microphone to give props to the people who made it all possible, he offered his own version of a Michael Moore moment.

"God bless President Bush, and God bless America," he said, clad in his trademark T-shirt, ripped blue jeans and leather jacket.

"I grew up a Republican," she says. "My family was the only Italian family in Queens that voted for Nixon instead of Kennedy."

Johnny was driven right by a youthful revulsion against, um, face-ism. "It was in 1960, the Nixon-Kennedy election," he says, recalling his first inclination toward the right. He was an only child of Irish heritage in a working-class neighborhood. Families on his block voted left, pro-union. "People around me were saying, 'Oh, Kennedy's so handsome,' and I thought, 'Well, if these people are going to vote for someone based on how he looks, I don't want to be party to that.'"

For his news now, he hits the Drudge Report and Newsmax.com, Fox News' "Hannity and Colmes," and "The O'Reilly Factor." He listens daily to Rush Limbaugh and Michael Medved. In L.A., people spend a lot of time in their cars, and he uses that time to educate himself, he says.

His list of favorite Republicans should humble the Republican National Committee, or at least get him invited to a GOP fund-raiser: Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Charlton Heston, [actor and close friend] Vincent Gallo, Ted Nugent, Messrs. Limbaugh and Hannity, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Wayne and Tom DeLay.

I thought Liberals were supposed to be understanding? And love everyone, no matter what color/sex/religion/beliefs.

Ok this is very generalized, but it seems most musical acts are liberal. I can think of two conservative bands: blues traveler and alice cooper (wont mention alan jackson or toby fucking keith). So why can't conservatives write good music? Is it their upper class cookie-cutter suburbanite soccer mom white bread lifestyle? Their unwillingness to think out of the box? Or are liberals better at it because they're lazy, get high, and jam all day? Their preference to go against the grain? Their bigger interest in culture and the arts in general? (update: please just answer the following question and forget the stereotypes ive used--for example, that all liberals are lazy potheads. i only used them so people would write more)

Why aren't their more good bands with conservative ideologies?

How are you judging "good" by?... lyrical content, musicianship, or personal opinion??? It's a different Genre of music that appeals to the conservative minded, again generalizing...they like country more and they tend to be christian and like different bands that play rock / pop etc (under the christian label)... but there are excellent musicians in each of those genres... You just don't hear about them b/c they aren't on the radio as much (or it's just not your taste)... Many people that like that type of music wouldn't call pearl jam or soundgarden or alice in chains "good" music...even though it's more popular (and I'd say better music)...but there are great musicians that are conservative and to many people they do write good music.

also, do you not like (or think they arent good) the overtly conservative bands b/c they are overtly conservative and it's more the message you don't like?

That shows you didn't go to school. Read The Long Revolution by the late Marxist cultural theorist and literary critic Professor Raymond Williams, and you will discover the link between political liberalism and the medieval concept of the liberal arts in the provincial guilds of England. However, I expect you won't bother. Thank you for your time.

So being religious makes people conservative?

Johnny Cash was very anti-establishment and I don't know much about the non-Bono members of U2, but their older music and Bono's charity work seem more liberal than conservative to me.

I have no idea how you bring up Neil Young into this... if he isn't liberal, than who is?

that was my point, what are the characteristics of being "conservative" or "liberal"??

Cash sang many songs for the common man, which is what a ton of old country singers have done, when there actually was REAL country music. but I don't know whatever gave you the idea that he was a liberal. or anti-establishment. what's that mean? he catered to the religious crowd, the country crowd, and the rock crowd. he made Hollywood movies and did variety shows on tv. he was a rebel in a sense, but not so much so as to operate outside the mainstream.

I also don't know what gave you an idea that Neil Young was liberal. I'm pretty sure that I've even read an interview with him where he said he's probably one of the most conservative people you've ever met.

again, it all comes down to the definition of liberal and conservative. if those definitions come down to "votes republican" or "votes democrat", I don't know. I've personally found that the people who are straight ticket voters are the dumbest of all people, because all they see is a party name and not the issues.

Thing is, artistically inclined people are naturally drawn to the more liberal side of the political swing.

I would definately agree with that.....

the whole nature of conservatism is rooted in stability and 'normality' which liberal ideas, obviouslly tend to steer clear from.....

Look at some of the greatest musical innovators, all have been liberal/left leaning -

    Radiohead
    Beatles
    Bob Dylan
    Nirvana

Radical and left/liberal thinking as always gone hand in hand with artistic experimenation.....

Conservatives are too busy with their jobs and families to have time to sit around smoking pot and coming up with lyrics to a song. I get up, go to work, come home, have dinner with the fam if I'm not working a double, read the kids a story and put them to bed and go to sleep and the routine starts over again. Where would I ever have time to sit around getting high to become musically inclined?
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

I think Joey wrote The KKK Took My Baby Away because Johnny stole his girl. And Bonzo Goes to Bitburgh had "(My Brain is Hangin' Upside Down" added to the title because Johnny didn't like how the song portrayed Reagan. You see, there was an old movie called "Bedtime for Bonzo" starring, you guessed it... Ronald Reagan. Bonzo, the chimp, had better acting chops than Ronnie.

JC was without a doubt, a very religious and spiritual man. But to call him "conservative" is quite a stretch. Conservatives only talk the talk. Johnny walked the walk.

I don't know about any of the guys from radiohead or Mr. Zimmerman, but I do know that half the Beatles and Kurt were all left-handed. And studies have shown that left-handed people also tend to be more creative.

Of course, Son of Sam and Jack the Ripper were also left-handed, so take it for what it's worth. :)
