Why do mad people often have delusions that they are Jesus? Why don't they think that they're Buddha, or the Hindu God Shiva? I guess some iconic figures are more iconic than others.
Why are some iconic figures more iconic, though? I understand what you're saying, but am trying to figure out why Hitler? As detestable as he was - and I am absolutely not an apologist, since I'm anti-statist (don't like nazis or commies or central command and control in general) - he certainly wasn't the worst of the bunch by any measure.

Maybe just because his crimes affected us in the west more than did Stalins. And the nature of the Jewish holocaust is seen to be more disturbing than the fact that Stalin starved 20 - 30 million of the Russian peasantry to death.

because the nazis kept such excellent records. thats why. the sole purpose of the final solution was to rid the earth of jews and other undesirables. it was calculated and meticulously accounted.
stalin's crime was indifference. it mattered not to him whether the peasants lived or died whereas hitler was focussed in his goal. besides the fact that the nazis operated right under our noses.

it's cultural. i imagine in a buddhist society or hindu society the delusional would not claim to be jesus christ, but as pointed out, buddha or shiva. a judeo-christian society throws up judeo-christian iconology.

no one is disputing this. it was hitler's methodology that sets him apart. there are more than a few countries that allow their people to starve. so in that stalin wasnt exactly unique. but let's not forget that this was the man that said a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.

This is true, actually.
And Stalin killed more people than Hitler.
