I know many of you had extensively debated and online-interacted with fellow Jammer onelongsong. In January, Jeanie - his girlfriend - posted the devastating news that he had passed away. I, for one, experienced the mourning of a one-time close friend.

Today I received this email. Two summers ago, Allen (onelongsong) and I had corresponded via email, from the same email address I received this letter from today. The email I received today is entitled "it's really me":

"the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. i came back from brain surgery and coma to find that i'm forever banned because i'm dead and kat won't reinstate me because her not verifying the information would be an embarrassment. i don't know if a 'bring back onelongsong' thread would help; but i miss all my friends on the board. especially now that i'm bedridden and have no one to talk to. i was in a coma when all that went on in early january so i couldn't intervene; and now it's too late. i still read the board but i can't respond. thank you for being good friends.
sincerely
allen
ols"

I thought it was important that all of you who had been touched by his "death" be privy to this information. I am curious what you, my friends, think/feel about this situation. Please share.

 WTF??? I, too, mourned the passing of OLS. I argued with and against him on various topics, and I was sad when he passed. This email is certainly troubling. Have you asked Jeanie it? What a strange turn of events - very twisted no matter what ends up being the truth.

Whoa, I am speechless. I was very upset to hear about his passing. I'm a bit confused on the matter now.

so? if that's the case, then the mods would be forced to either admit they goofed or let him have his new screen name. either way, he's back in.

"the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. i came back from brain surgery and coma to find that i'm forever banned because i'm dead and kat won't reinstate me because her not verifying the information would be an embarrassment."

how does one "greatly exaggerate" a death? either one is dead, or one is not. period. as far as kat and/or sea being *embarassed*...i highly doubt it. i am sure if OLS emailed either of them, he could be reinstated, unless there extenuating circumstances regarding his membership here that none of us are privvy to. i highly doubt that the mods here "verify" board members' passing. i would think they'd leave it to close friends/family members to announce, perhaps PM one of the mods, etc...i honestly don't know.

back when OLs's passing was announced, and then not too much later...there most definitely seemed to be some controversary regarding his "death"....and i for one have no idea what did go on. however, whatever occurred, i think it is up to OLS to email the mods and get reinstated if that his desire, if the mods think it's acceptable....or he can easily make a new usernmae as countless others have. the mods didn't "goof"...they went on information presented to them, by a CLOSe friend of OLS, who had gotten the information supposedly from his family members, so what else would one feel to 'verify'....? who would think one's family would offer false information of a family membrs death? cmon..

no matter what, IF indeed all is well for OLS, i wish him well.....but it most definitely seemed like a very ugly hoax was played on at least one, if not all, present on MT. tis sad. happy to know he's alive though and wish him good health.

I've dealt with this on other online groups. IMO, no one is dead until an obituary is posted by a newspaper.

Was there ever an obit from OLS? I don't ever remember seeing one. If he is still alive that would be AMAZING news.

This by far is the strangest post ever on the Moving Train. I was pretty shocked when I heard of Alan's death back in January and was saddened by it. We used to debate back and forth via PMs and he was always someone I greatly enjoyed corresponding with. I hope this is not some cruel joke by someone with access to his e-mail.

that's kinda whati'm thinking. someone in his office or household has access to his email and for whatever reason has decided to f*ck with people he used to correspond with. for all we know, we're not the only ones they're doing this to.

i say, leave it alone and let "him" figure it out for himself.

    No, I don't think he's dead.

I think, however, when the mods got wind of the situation, and that he wasn't dead after so many mourned him, and on the tail of hippiemom's passing, they rightfully deleted the original "death-thread" (which myself and another cannot find) and have decided not to let Allen on the board.

double post...and while I'm at it....

your initial post suggested he try to get on under a different identity, which is against board rules...I'm not surprised the moderators deleted that.

 i meant that as a way of getting their attention that he is, in fact, not dead. not to just break rules. and if his "death" was just some stupid joke, then i agree, he doesn't deserve to be on the board at all.

whatever. i don;t really care one way or another. i barely remember him.

Which is more likely? Loved ones of the "deceased" playing a viscious game with his email......

Or, that this "erroneous" information of a death got out on OLS' end...with an intent that is highly questionable?

I was friends with OLS. Finally, one day I had to publicly disagree with him, and call him out for being deceitful to many. His response was to publicly tell me--in direct response to my post-- that he was dying (from my understanding, his first public post to say so). Suddenly 25 people joined the thread and offered him their sympathy!! I was dumbfounded!

I didn't believe he was dying to begin with. And if he was/is, he was using his medical condition to sway debates, which is highly questionable.

I agree. I am quite upset about this. I mourned his death. I considered him a friend. Let's not forget a particular poster here that was devastated by the news of his death. We all mourned him. Then he sends an email wanting back on the board? This is very suspicious and I'm afraid the joke's on us.

Is this real? Because... if I recall... this happened before... the whole, 'Near Death' thing.
I hope this is true.. becaue I do not wish death upon anyone... well, except Usama Bin Laden... but, that's because he's an asshole. Anyway... if it turns out to be true... he has more lives than my cat... who only had one life.

that's quite the assumption about OLS. :p

it is sad how many over the years have felt the need/desire to *cry wolf* here. deaths, attempted suicides, bizaree life stories later disproved, etc. sad. all i can say/think is that if someone is THAT desperate for attention, while upsetting to think one purposely duped a great many of us....i'd say he/she is in GREAt need of attention/validation to go to such lengths to get it.
