How much power do your president have? Is he an "elected king" that you dont hear much about, as in Germany, or does he actually wield the power like the US, Russia and so on?

    Peace

I gotta say, the president can very well be a she! :p

the president has some power. we do hear much about him/her..
a few decades ago the Finnish president had a lot more power than now though.
but even today he/she is the head of the defence force (army) and he/she also decides whether someone will be pardoned (prisoners etc.). and.. hmm, what else..
some people think that president's power should be reduced and that he/she should become more of a "opinion leader". (which the president to some extent already is mind you.)

wah, that's all I can remember for now but if I remember something else, I'll get it here. :)

  • Ha ha! thought you could escape? Not this time.

Do most Finns live in houses or flats? And do buldings have a steep roof to stop the snow from piling up?

Where does Finland get its energy from (I may have asked that before)? I would imagine that heating costs are pretty huge.
It doesn't matter if you're male, female, or confused; black, white, brown, red, green, yellow; gay, lesbian; redneck cop, stoned; ugly; military style, doggy style; fat, rich or poor; vegetarian or cannibal; bum, hippie, virgin; famous or drunk-you're either an asshole or you're not!

I've got no statistics so I'm gonna answer this with my knowledge and deduction. :)

many young Finns and young Finnish families live in flats but most people prefer living in a house.
we also have there terraced houses.. like flats but not on top of each other, but next to each other. :D if that makes any sense.. a lot of people live in those too.

    steep roofs, deffinately.
well, there are some houses with flat roofs but they're not that practical and are maybe used only in summer.

    nuclear power.

I don't actually know how big are the heating costs.. I'll try and find out. :)

that is it, Tarja Halonen was again voted to be the Finnish president!!! :D woohoo!

the battle was tight, Tarja won with 51.8% whilst Sauli Niiinistö managed to get 48.2%.

now that Tarja was elected again, she will be the president for six more years. and after this second season, she cannot put herself up for election in the next election.

here are some pics of our delightful president:

How do you pronounce that name? Tarja? Does it sound like Tara? Or Tasha? Or it pronounced the way it looks?

every word in Finnish is pronounced the way they are written. :)
hmm, let me see if there's a way to explain how to pronounce it.....

((the Ta-part is pronounced kind of like the same part in Tasha.))
Tar-part like... I dunno, pronounce it like tar? :D
    hmm, this is challenging.
ja-part pretty much like you would pronounce ya.

hmm, maybe those directions are no use at all.
just pronounce it how you feel is best.

If only the same could be said about english. Just look at that sentence for example, and this one.

So J has a different sound in Finnish? More like the Y in english by the sound of it.

    I know. difficult stuff.

naturally it has a different sound, cause almost every letter has a different sound.. and about that y.. yeah, I guess it could be said it's a bit like that but it depends on the word. :)

as some of you might know, the talk show host Conan O'Brien has been showing his interest towards Finland lately cause he looks like our president Tarja Halonen.

now, Finns are very excited about that and many have sent him gifts and invitations to our beautiful ( :D ) country, and that's very fine by me.
but. the city of Turku sent mr O'Brien a video-invitation...
and it's.. embarrassing. (in my opinion at least) and if you have seen it.. please be informed that not all Finns act like that and those who do, don't act like that all the time. mostly just under heavy alcoholisation.
phew, got that off my chest. :)

and this is ment in no offense towards Turku! (if someone should think that)
for what I know about it, I like it. one of my former teachers was from Turku. :)

Haha. no worries. I just came to think of him today with the Olympics coming up and stuff. Realized we hadn't heard anything off him for ages. Just wondered if you'd heard anything about him in Finland that's all.
maybe there's only the norwegian former top-athlets that are into publisity after they retired then :o

    okay. :)

at least I haven't heard anything. basically the last I know is that after 2004-2005 season he announced that he had retired from competitive skiing..

hmm, yeah. not that many top athletes get into publicity after retiring.. or if they do, it's mostly some charity work. :)

Hm, most of our top atlethes got thier own companies that sells clothes and stuffand that's why they're in media so much. I thought it was the same over there. But they do some charity too. At least I think/hope so.

Hm, it's weird that Finland and Norway almost have no connection, despite being that close to each other.
