this reads like a fancy christian way of saying that open-mindedness has to include wanton stupidity. creationism is not science, period. end of discussion. under no definition or practice of the discipline does creationism qualify as a legit scientific theory. being open-minded doesn't mean i need to go "oh, well i don't want to hurt your feelings so yes, the fact that your religious beliefs are legit obviously means they should be added to the science curriculum because we wouldn't want you to feel left out." we don't teach exodus in world history either. and prayer and episcopal snake healing are not taught in med school. that's all i'm saying. you're entitled to your beliefs and i will respect them. but when you place those beliefs in spheres where they have no business and attempt to force them on the public, you can expect they will be challenged. the fact that you can't take any critical analysis of those beliefs is proof that it is not science and has no business in a science classroom.
Last I checked I was not in the school book curriculum business. So, I take no responsibility but assure you that I do believe that just as I am a Christian but take offense at someone presuming I am Catholic and teaching my kids the ways of that faith I also understand that Public schools are not in the business of faith. They should not be. That is not saying that all public school kids are athiest by any means at all. It just means that if I send my kids to a public school, which I do, then I am responsible for the faith I choose to teach them.
That's all I mean.
And hell no, I am not saying anything at all to you about the whole religion thing.
Didn't you get that I am not into that? I meant that. I am not one of those Christians that are into the Jehovah Witness type of life. If you choose to believe in Jesus, I will talk to you and yeah, get excited as I tell you about my life with Him, but if you read any of my posts on Him or faith, you will see that I am not at all common in the way I see Him.

And blowhard? From reviewing your posts jeffbr, and observing your HI-FI tone, I don't guess you've ever said anything for "dramatic effect" eh?
Here's what I don't get - why you conservatives even bother with Pearl Jam. You think Vedder is a blowhard. You can't possibly agree with any of their political views, and probably not their esoteric views either. I think you guys hang around here just to agitate.
Go somewhere else and call people names.
I am conservative but I do not think that of Eddie Vedder. I respect him because he appears to have done his homework and made his decisions based on some intelligent thinking. That is all I look to at anyone's choices at all. I respect that in a person and I don't respect anyone who is a conservative either who has been spoon fed the facts and not ever looked at them themselves.
I am not biased in what earns the respect of people. Agreeing with me is not the means to earning my respect.

fair enough. my initial post was a response to someone saying how science books should have footnotes citing to genesis in the evolution section, which is absurd. i couldn't tell what your stance on that was... it seemed like you were passively trying to support it and somehow say anything else would be disrespectful to religion. if i was wrong on that, my apologies.
on the flip side, i think private schools (catholic or whatever) should be able to teach whatever they damn well please without state regulation.
i don't think i assumed anywhere that you were catholic? what has your denomination got to do with any of this? as far as i am concerned, the catholic are pretty ok in my book. sure, they've got hokey and outdated rituals, but it seems to know its place just fine. the vatican came out and condemned creation science as not science and even said they suspect there is alien life in this universe. they're not half bad in my book. it's those loony apocalyptic end times people that spook me.
then again, maybe i've a soft spot for the foibles of catholicism since i did 13 years' time in those schools.

Ok I am so glad that I have made peace with you in that you understand that I am an authentic person who truly does respect others. If I am ever less, I want to know that because I do not want to ever give anyone less respect than my feelings would handle. By that, I mean that I am a person who is hurt when others say mean things that I would never say to them. At my age I have come to realize that I need to be a person who is respectful to others but also that is living a life that is fair to me. That in itself has been a journey that is still evolving and not one without its battle wounds.
But that said, what I meant about the Catholism is that, for me, I was a Greek Orthodox kid attending a Catholic school. I wrote a sort of testimony type of book when I renewed my faith as an adult that said, as a young child going to a Catholic school I was confused because I was not able to receive the same communion as the others kids although I still had to attend the manditory before school masses that the other kids had to go to. So, year after year, I had to uncomfortably move over while the kids got their communion and mouth "I'm not Catholic" as they looked puzzled at me and wondered why I wasn't in line. So, my humorous take on that "fire and brimstone" way of teaching religion when I was young, mind you, was that, "those kids were going to hell; I wasn't even Catholic so I had no idea WHERE I was going to go."
And all the Christians in the world should be united in one belief and if they are sincerely following Him, then there should be no hiarchy among us because that is ludacrous. Even among non beleivers it is the same. I have no right to be that way to them either.
All the whole WWJD bs should have been somehow including, "He wouldn't act like an asshole".
See, I am not traditional. And though I do not currently practice a faith persay, due to some personal things that have occurred, I will say that my stance on Jesus is one of utmost respect and the knowledge that I am truly no more important or valid than anyone else. If I am blessed, as I may feel to have the comfort of knowing that there is a reason to all of my life, whether it is Jesus, karma or fate, then I am just fortuneate to have that knowledge that although I may go through some hard things that are painful, it is for something. Even if that something is merely personal growth.
And as for the end times, I have a lot to do before then so I am not there either.

Just back, and amazed to see all who have responded. I admit that having read back over my original post I should have, maybe, counted to 10 before writing bits, ie. the bland generalisations that I used. However I do stand over the majority of it.
The country that I live in does also have its own faults, of that I can freely admit, however Ireland's role and influence in the free world is very questionable in comparison to the United States. My believe is that the last 8 years has been far from your best ever in terms of international recognition, of which I have gathered some of you could care less about and that's fine, horses for courses and all that.
I must say I did expect some of the criticism, and if you believe it was justified then that is fine, more power to you. One person did mention that according to what he knows about the Irish we are all violent drunkards and to be fair that is the comment that most summed up the point I was trying to make. Sometimes we believe too much what we hear and see on TV and somehow allow that point of view to become our reality, that doesn't make it so.
I do hope you vote in an alternative to what you have in government, some one also mentioned that it is wrong to vote for Obama on the premise that it is a change, I disagree, a great man (Wexford Hurling Manager - won us the All Ireland in '96) "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got". If you are not happy with what you have gotten from your government then it is time for a change.
Jesus I think I just went on another rant - sorry.....
Well, they may not be morons, and I don't know about their elbows and asses, but dear OP, this is the political mind of many Americans.
And that is the shame that it is.
There seems to be a lot of people out there ignorant of the issues on show, I spoke to a woman back in July who was over on her holidays who is still convinced that Al Queada and Sadamn were in cohoots. That's a real shame and I believe is something which this current administration should not be allowed get away with. The willful distruction of another nation based on pure ignorance and lies.
Unfortunatly there is also the idea that only America seems to know what it is like to be attacked, an utter fallacy. We Irish certanly have some experience when it comes to unjust agression and what ever way the shit gets thrown Iraq had nothing what so ever to do with 911.
I do believe that Americans will cop on, I do have faith in the belief that you can only push a people so far before they mark a line in the sand and say "you have pushed us this far and will push us no more..." and you never know, maybe even start pushing back and making these bastards accountable.
the fact that this vote is far from undecided highlights what is wrong with america ...
Not unique to just America. Just human nature driven by fear and perceived truths. Those in charge simply capitalize on these human traits to get what they want. Hence no talk of solutions, substance, policy...just talk to re-enforce what we want to hear...to re-enforce the fragile house of cards we've built upon.
A chara that was all you needed to say. Yer a commie ain't ya? Yer seeing Red?
Your perception of the American political system seems a bit tinged by your Red socialist leanings.
White people get hit by hurricanes all the time, but no one complains about that. Only when a city full of blacks gets hit do we go up in arms about the lack of help from the federal government.

Right, let's set some things straight here, if not for my own sanity at this point. Been a member now for a few years, and on the whole I don't post a whole hell of a lot, read bucket loads of posts though. Recently I have found myself at ends with the posts I have been reading:
I am not a citizen of the USA, granted, but that can sometimes help bring some objectivity to the table. I can't believe when I read on here and see on the news that it is predicted to be a very close race come November, holy shit, guys is there any hope. Now I know that a lot of you, that post on these boards, seem like intelligent people, and I am sorry to say this, but the rest of that country must be inhabited by iliterate savages who don't know thier asses from their elbows.
This party has lied to you and the world about the dreaded WMD's so as to invade a soverign nation that never posed a threat. Allowed your black population in New Orleans literaly float past without lifting a finger. Has driven your country into the depths of an impending recession. Violated the human rights of countless people with these torture flights. Eroded completley what it is that defines the USA,namely freedom. Anyone entering your country is essentially treated to a barrage of backround searchs and have personnal information disclosed and retained. The word terrorist has come to mean muslim, the bile I read and hear on these are amazing and amount to nothing short of pure blind racism. Racism ingrained into a population that really should know better ie. I was watching a report that interviewed a number of people on a street corner and many said that they would not vote Obama due to - him being black, his name, many believe he is Muslim. The illegal detention centres that are set up at will, the millions who have been slaughtered etc.......I could go on and on and on
And it's going to be a close race, McCain even shows ahead in some polls
I have read that watching too much television may impact short term memory and perhaps that explains it on the whole, I just really dont know, I am at an absolute loss.
The straw that broke the camels back was when I was reading a post and somebody mentioned that there was no harm in teaching Creationist and Evolutionist ideas in schools, and that was it, I saw red. Because of this red mist post I am sure to have insulted many of you whom I would not have wanted to, and if I have, I honest to God apoligise.
Rant over
Ok, so I have a question. Do you think that as Americans we are kind of clueless as a whole, not because of whom we would vote for but just for the sake that we have it pretty good and still complain.
I have heard that from some people and it makes sense to me, like it or not. (me liking it or not, I mean)

I agree with him the majority dont give a dang to take the time to find who their officials are...let alone take a side and make a stand on an issue. I think awareness is improving as people are pushed, as he said, to draw that line in the sand....but to motivate them to stand up and rally is worse then pulling teeth! The people I know who have a clue~ dont care enough to defend it.
Sorry~ but thats my view. Its sad.
