Let's cap all wages at a maximum of $50,000 per year. No person, regardless of ability or value, should be permitted to make over $50,000 in one year because, obviously, no one needs more than $50,000 in one year. All income exceeding $50,000 should be taxed at a 100% rate.
    Who's with me?

It's interesting, I love the idea since it would get rid of greed and that's what's destroying people, frankly.

    Huh???

The thread made you express your true beliefs, which is really difficult these days, getting people on the left to directly tell you what they believe in.

FFG, congrats on an excellent thread!
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
  • I'm thinking about others here...

Oh, phew. Otherwise this would never work for me.
I know if there is a family of say 3 kids where the mom stays at home and dad brings home the bacon, 50,000 (being say 35,000 euro) is absolutely NOTHING.

But everyone must sacrifice! And, I promise, prices will go down because you will now be on equal footing with all the previously rich fat cats. Stores will have to cater to you now, not just them!
  • Of course not! You may still go to any store you'd like. And since grocers will no longer be able to selfishly squander the profits of their stores on their own personal interests, there will be more stores than ever!!

People will create because they have to.

It will be just the opposite. No more poverty to bring us down! No more oppression by rich fat cats! Everyone will be the same!
No more corruption and with this, each government will HAVE to be there simply to make the country a better place. There will be no ulterior motive. How lovely would that be?

EXACTLY!!!! It will get rid of greed. Since no one is allowed to have more than $50,000 / year, no one will want it.
  • No more corruption and with this, each government will HAVE to be there simply to make the country a better place. There will be no ulterior motive. How lovely would that be?

It would be great. It would be impossible to be corrupt.

Well I don't consider myself to be on the left... more of a middle of the line realist (who can also dream :o hmm... not sure where I'm going with this) but I've never been one to shy away from saying what I really believe in :)

I think it's apathy, laziness, jealousy and feelings of entitlement that are destroying people. Or in other words, they are destroying themselves.

ah yes each person should be equal but somebody with 4 others to support isn't exactly equal to me on my single lonesome now, are they? I'm not usually one to give a crap about people with kids but this may just be a tad unfair.

I suppose special exemptions are possible for friends of the state. What line of work are you in? How can I use you?

law school. i can write great bureacracy for you.
  • jeffbr wrote:
But...but...but...ummm...isn't that different? Don't we need the nanny state to guarantee our right to a fair wage for the working class?

Of course we do! And we also need the state to guarantee our right to equality. And with that right comes the obligation of everyone who makes more than $50,000 per year to sacrifice for the common good.
After all, the state is able to more accurately assign value to labor than the market isn't it?

Certainly!!! We'll have the most respected economists determining exactly what your labor is worth. It will cut out all of the inefficiencies of the market and the inherent prejudices of racial and gender-based power matrices. Everyone will get paid what we tell them they're worth.

Unfortunately, we already have that covered. Tell me, do you have any experience with interrogations?

This unfairly punishes single people. There's no way I could keep my house and my current (modest) lifestyle if I was reduced to $50K per year.

This is discrimination and I'm entitled to make more than that.

But those people are victims of the rich! They're apathetic and lazy because they have no hope, no opportunity. We must force the more fortunate to provide that hope and those opportunities -- the more forutnate need to compromise and to cooperate.

People are jealous because others have more than they do. That's what we have to change! We have to redistribute the wealth back to the people who created it and are its rightful owners. Jealousy is proof that you are entitled.

Hey - it's true. It would be tough to afford a decent house in a decent neighborhood on that salary.

(especially if I have a car payment, high student loan debt, and still take several vacations each year!)

It's only unfair because you refuse to cooperate! You should help those people with their children because, as we all know, it take a village to raise a child. They're only struggling because of your failure and their greed.

"Modest"??? What's "modest" about it. You're alive aren't you?

You're only entitled to make what the AMERICAN PUBLIC determines you're allowed to make. Your opinion is selfish and naive.

But if 50,000 is the cap on what people can earn... house prices will come down, everyone will have an equal chance to keep up payments, afford holidays, etc.

Ahh..but if it's the MAXIMUM (and therefore only a select few should be earning it), then there will be a shift in EVERYONE's wages and in the end it will mean nothing.

Exactly! Finally, someone who's taken an economics class.

Imagine the holidays you could take!! Since fancy hotels will no longer have the rich to cater to, they'll have to cater to people like us!

Actually I DID take economics but I was sitting beside the guy I had a crush on at the time :) ... everything went over my head :o

This would need to be a worldwide thing though... can we just have a thread that's international for once please? :)

But everyone will be equal! And equality means everyone gets the same thing. So there's no such thing as want because want is only based on what someone else has, right?
