i think we do here...at least the regulars i talk to :) we have strong opinions, and maybe some of us are quick to be ultra-sensative (not me of course :)), but i would rather strongly disagree with someone who deeply believes in what they are saying than agree with someone for the sake of agreement.

Well I'd rather not argue at all. Particular in this forum. Seems like an exercise in futility to me. I'd prefer that discussion was encouraged. Respectful discussion. So that people have the opportunity to learn who may not previously have known about the subject and those that already do know of the subject may learn to look at it in other ways. And at some point I'd like to see consensus.

but i'm always eager to laugh at myself and whip up a bad ass martini...just don't ask for a chocolate or fruity one :)

Well martini isn't really my thing, but having tried standard, fruity and chocolate, I'd be sticking with standard. Shaken not stirred! ;)

I really detest the terms 'liberal' and 'conservative', because they're unconstructive and polarising, but if you're going to go around make wild generalisations like that I feel like I should at least say a few words in response. My definition of conservatism and liberalism seem to be almost exactly opposite.

Liberalism, in my view is fundamentally about having faith in ordinary people's ability to make the best choice for themselves about how they want to live their lives. Conservatism, on the other hand, seems to be more about making the decisions for society based on what is considered (by conservatives) to be the ideal way of life.

Abortion and gay marriage are two issues that imediately spring to mind that illustrate this point. While conservatives would generally agree that it is not in society's best interest to allow abortion or gay marriage, liberals would generally agree that the individual should be allowed to make this choice for themsleves.

Nicely said Scott. And I think I would say that I am pretty much in agreement with all of it. Except that maybe I don't look to a persons politics first and foremost as a criteria for friendship, so whether they are a liberal or a conservative doesn't really come in to the equation for me most of the time. :)

i must not be paying attention. or as a humanties student i just dont give a fuck as i always say what i want and am more than ready to back up my words. any media that is censoring is not media i pay any heed to anyway. so if the wowsers want their power then eventually they will reap what they sow. meanwhile i'll just sit back, laugh my arse off at the narrrowminded fools and continue to counter any influence they may have over my children.

:D Never do I play couch commando quite so quickly as when Johnny or Peter or a dozen others pop onto the screen. I have no patience for political "bites" on the radio and I avoid most newsprint.
But I'm not so sure the ostrich approach is working. Certainly by paying attention we are only encouraging the bastards, but one has to wonder if ignoring them isn't also allowing them carte blanche. (sp?)

I'd love to find a way to advocate and support more open minded media.
Love to know the best avenues to take to win back our lost freedom of speech. And I would truly love to find a way to stop this erosion of our personal, artistic and political freedoms once and for all. I'm tired of censorship. Truly tired of it.

That hardly sounds like an unbiased publication. . .

Jeanie, I don't choose my friends based on their politics either. To be honest conversations about politics generally don't excite me that much, and usually I'd much rather talk about kayaking, or diving, or fishing, or the latest episode of the chaser. I just thought that that characterisation of liberalism and conservatism was fairly ridiculous.
It doesn't matter if you're male, female, or confused; black, white, brown, red, green, yellow; gay, lesbian; redneck cop, stoned; ugly; military style, doggy style; fat, rich or poor; vegetarian or cannibal; bum, hippie, virgin; famous or drunk-you're either an asshole or you're not!
