That's not what I'm saying should happen. Just a joking implication on my part.

If it's potentially fatal for the mother, no pro-lifer would disagree with aborting the child to save the mother's life.

We should be careful about how we bandy about the ole' "to save the mother's life" phrase though.

"A mother who refused cancer treatment and died so her fourth child could be born was elevated to sainthood yesterday in a move seen by many as a strong statement from the Vatican against the legalisation of abortion."

    http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/5-17-2004-54234.asp

Was that an immoral act for that mother? Or, did she die so that her child might have life?

I wouldn't force any mother to die so her child could live. Nonetheless, I can find no good reason why her act is immoral.

No one would view that act as immoral. Sometimes people around here really need to think about things before they say them. No offense, but come on now...

As I live and breathe. The living part has it's ups and downs - and I can't be sure what I'm breathing right now. Still, here I am.

I guess you need to go over there and take a test with her and see the results for yourself. Pregnancy tests don't show up false positives, only false negatives. When a woman is pregnant, she begins producing a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadtropin........ or HCG. The false negatives can happen when the HCG levels are too low for the test to detect, which is often the case in very early pregnancy. A positive result though, always means pregnancy, because this hormone is only produced when a woman is pregnant. So, while a test may show a negative result early on, then show a positive one as the days and weeks progress, the same is not true for a positive result becoming negative.
Whatever the case, best of luck with it all.

i've been under the impression that while rare, false positives do exist--especially in the case of 'chemical pregnancy'.

misinterpretation, incorrect use of tests is a lot more likely though.

First up let me say, hope that things are improving for you, it must have been an horrific year.:( I guess I just wanted to ask a question, if you don't mind. I have always wanted to come to New Orleans and see the old French quarter. Is there any of it left? And would now be a good time for a tourist to visit or should I wait? :)

PS: Probably should have PM this to you. Sorry for interrupting a very important thread guys. Did I mention I'm very tired? :(

Roughly 80% of the city took on at least a foot of water (and I do mean "at least" - some areas took on 20+ ). The French Quarter was not in that 80% - so pretty much all of it is left. There was a lot of wind damage, and there are plenty of stores and what not that haven't re-opened yet due to the owners living in that 80%; but it's still here. Most of the old city survived the storm. The reason being that when the city started out, there were no levees; so everything was built on the "high" ground.

As for tourism - yeah, there's still plenty to see and do here. I'd recommend visiting in the late fall through the middle of spring. That's when our weather is the nicest, and we've got things like Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, Jazz Fest, Voodoo Fest, ect. going on. The summer is pretty dull, hot, and very very wet.

Did you miss the part where he said that his ex-g/f has a heart condition and doctors have told her not to give birth?

I didn't miss that part, no. I'm just saying if the judge were to order her to give birth (which I highly doubt and hopefully would not happen), then the baby could be put up for adoption. I was saying this in response to the poster saying "both of our lives are ruined and there will be a newborn baby entering a family that cannot possibly support it or take care of it."

So basically you're providing a remedy for the "newborn baby entering a family that cannot possibly support it or take care of it" part of the sentence while leaving in the "both of our lives are ruined" part as a given.

That depends on how you're interpreting "both of our lives are ruined". If the judge did make a rediculous ruling and the girl was forced to give birth, then whatever effects the birth had on her health would be a given. So if that's a given, there's really no advice to give to her except appeal the judge's decision.

I'm just pointing out the fact that the poster wouldn't be forced to support the baby or take care of it. Adoption would be an option if he felt that trying to support his baby would ruin his life in addition to the mother's.

    Until now.

Seventeen years old and my ex girlfriend (whom I broke up with a couple weeks ago) says she thinks she's pregnant. She's on the patch, which means something fucked up big time if it's true. Her mother is the kind of person who would kill the daughter if she found out (and I mean that literally), plus she's a rampid alcoholic which just doesn't help this at all.

My ex has a heart condition which her doctors said prevents her from giving birth because she physically could not handle it (she will die), but her mother still says she cannot have an abortion.

In North Carolina parental consent is required for an abortion unless a judge allows a bypass. If this turns out to be a pregnancy and for some ungodly reason a judge doesn't allow an abortion without parental consent both of our lives are ruined and there will be a newborn baby entering a family that cannot possibly support it or take care of it.

You tell me what "morality" is.

Her mother says she cannot have an abortion for the pregnancy she doesn't even know might exist? Maybe I misunderstood.

Thanks for clarifying this Saturnal.:) My sleep deprived brain had me running off in the completely wrong direction were I thought you were suggesting that if the mother died in child birth no worries, just adopt out the baby! See told you I was sleep deprived! ;)

And yeah if the judge did make her give birth (what an horrific thought) then adoption would be a very good option. :)

You can't fucking tell teenagers raging with hormones and curiousity not to have sex - btw how's that abstinance only health class system working out for you conservatives what with the rising levels of teenage pregnancy?

    Adoption is a last resort...

I really feel uncomfortable doing that, given that I'm not terribly informed on it,... My impression is that it's not great for the kid though. And in any case it's discomforting all around,... still a better choice than raising a child in our case.

    It hasn't yet..

calls being made.. research being done.. things being planned.

Whats a chemical pregnancy? I've never heard this term before. From what I understand, the human body has negligible amounts of hCG, but the tests are designed to detect above certain amounts. There are also some very rare forms of cancer that can elevate the levels of hCG. As for incorrect use of a pregnancy test........ they're not that hard, you piss on a stick, wait three minutes and bob's yer uncle, you have a result. Misinterpretation could be due to......... well I dunno what, a blue line is preggers, no blue line is not preggers. Maybe the false positive is simply due to wishful thinking?

EXCELLENT response!!!:) I completely agree with you on this. And as for the adoption option, I only raise it as a good option if you are forced to continue the pregnancy because I think it would be infinitely better for the three of you than struggling along at such an early stage in your life. But really it's a personal choice which I'm sure you'll handle as compently as you have the situation so far. Much kudos to you. :)

i have to kind of agree with this. there's other ways to have an orgasm than actual vaginal penetration. if you have to get your rocks off, why not oral, or mutual masturbation, especially if you know beforehand that pregnancy would be a horrible outcome?

i'm not trying to be an asshole and i'm sure know1 isn't either. it's not about what side of the aisle someone is on, it's about personal responsibility.

anyway, after all that, i hope things work out ok for you and your ex. pregnancy scares are.....well, scary no matter what age you are. i was 30 when my wife got pregnant with our second child, and those jitters came right back. hang in there and no matter what happens just remember, it's not the end of the world.
