Look, i am in agreeance that Che has taken this thread to some pretty absurd levels, but, the initial post is not as far off the mark as many are claiming. I'm not affluent, i didn't grow up affluent in an affluent part of town, and, i am a white male. i struggle, but, would be very naive to suggest that i have been completely without some degree of white privelege. i also think it is important not to simply consider our own individual cases, but rather to look at demographics collectively and in general. When one does so, it is rather difficult to argue that white privelege does not exist. 60 years ago as well as 60 seconds ago.

Quite honestly, i think the initial post in the "taking bets" thread is much more troubling. THAT one sent up a red flag IMO.

that is kinda interesting, cos i do feel like there's a latent racist condescension in che's post... like blacks cannot help themselves without our white aid, help and protection. and like blacks are way too weak to overcome our wealth and privilege. the barriers have been removed, and yes there is still latent prejudice out there, but to say every white man is "the devil" and born with a silver spoon and personally responsible for black oppression is utterly ridiculous. and it only reinforces the cycle. like your friend says, it's awkward to hear white people talking about that shit. it's awkward for whites to constantly feel guilty around black people becos they're the devil and oppressor. so whites avoid black people and it reinforces the tension.

Why would blacks say these things to their kids. Certainly blacks are just as responsible and caring as whites. Well heres the reason:

They treat their kids like that because thats what would happen if a black male said something to a cop or said something to a roudy group of violent whites.

Essentially they are getting them ready for a world where your skin color determines if you get shot on site by police for having a wallet, or whatever

My sister got her drivers liscence but didnt have to practice what she would do, as the police officer gets out of his car, what she would do if the officer shot her on site for being white. She didnt have to put her hands on the steering wheel in sight of the officer. Yet as a black male, this is a reality.

So my skin color didnt have anything to do with being accepted to college?

i came from a well off suburban white family. my dad used to get us with the belt when we misbehaved. i dont think it had anything to do with preparing us for being downtrodden in society.

I have no doubt that che is very sincere, that he genuinely feels pain deep in his heart for the victims of the racism that absolutely does exist in our society, but I have to believe that he doesn't know any black people. hey hey hey ... i agree with you all the way up to point that you said Che was a jackoff. As a person wasn't he exactly what you are suggesting OUR Che do? Also, choosing "not to notice" a person's ethnic background does not mean that you aren't racist...don't most people have particular experiences and life backgrounds due in part ot the way people in this society treat them because of their skin color? To choose not to recognize this is kind of silly if you ask me.

I'm a WMA and I'm totally fine with it. I like being a white male. Maybe I'm weird. On the rock and roll thing, I know plenty of black people who wouldn't walk across the street to piss on Mick Jagger if he was on fire. My upstairs neighbors, who are not an exact representation of all things black, play music all the time and I've never heard a rock song blare out of their speakers. And there's nothing wrong with that. As for people who say they don't see a person's skin color....what bullshit! It's the first thing that's apparent when you meet someone, unless you're blind, but that doesn't mean a person has to treat someone else differently b/c of their skin.

I didn't do anything wrong.

I never treated anyone wrong based on race, religion or gender.

I've never had any slaves and neither have anyone else in my family.

I've hired black people for jobs, because they were more qualified than the others.

I've hired white people, hispanics and asians because they more qualified than the others.

I fired black people, white people and hispanics because they were fucking up and not meeting the required standards for the job.

I'm guessing that cutback was refering to Ernesto Che Guevara as a jackoff, which I fully agree. I have no respect for people who praise violence as El Che Guevara used to do.
