Dying Bees theories...

I was wondering what people think is the cause of the dying bees? If people haven't heard...like 85% of the Bee population has been dying. They have a hand in production of 90% of our food supply through pollination...so its kinda scary. On the news near where i live the other day...they did a story on it...and quoted a bee keeper as saying..."there are several 'smoking guns'.." but then they never said what they are....

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas...or has heard anything that seems like a legitimate reason why they are dying. The only thing i can think of is either a disease in the species...or cell phone towers and such.

what do people think?

Bees are able to see UV. Maybe that has something to do with it?

that's interesting. like the whole...global warming thing....atmosphere letting in too many UV rays...and that is killing more bees now?

I have heard theories of Cell Phone traffic to mite that eat at the membranes of their wings.
    Who knows?
    ...
But, it is scary... according to Einstein... after the bees become extinct, Mankind has about 4 years.

    Bees can see UV
    On the other side,
    Pit Vipers can see infrared
And Hammerhead sharks Follow Magentic north and south in their migratory patterns.

We are out of touch with the world around us.

Einstein said that when all the bees die off, humans have about 4 years to live.

A pamphlet distributed [in Brussels] by the National Union of French Apiculture quoted Albert Einstein. "If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination ... no more men!" [From Chris Mclaughlin's "Fearful Beekeepers Plead for Curbs on Honey Imports," The Scotsman, 25 January 1994.]

The beekeepers' warnings had some heavyweight expert support. A pamphlet distributed by the National Union of French Apiculture quoted Albert Einstein. "If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live," Einstein was quoted as saying. "No more bees, no more pollination ... no more men!" [From Paul Ames's report for the Associated Press, "Life's Not So Sweet for Europe's Embattled Beekeepers," 24 January 1994.]

i would suspect it has something to do with what we are doing to the environment ... the arctic seal that recently got rescued in florida is yet another indication ...

More to add. This is a topic that deeply interests me. Have we thought about the trickle down effects of what may happen. Already farmers are importing bees from all over the world to keep up with supply and demand. This concerns me for 2 reasons.

Didn't when the British invaded Africa, for whatever reason, the bees brought there combined with the African bee and what resulted was the Killer Bee. I'm pretty sure that it was purposefully bred, but still. When 50,000 Austraiian bees are coming to a Montana farm to offset the shortage, (and that's one farm) what allergens are they bringing with them? What kind of effect will it have on future generations?

Humans have more of a global impact than we are aware of.

We will be the ultimate demise of our species... well, actually, our arrogance and our denial will do us in. Mother Earth can only take so much. Mass Extinction is a means for her to heal.

I was reading an article last night that said bee's were traveling with GM crops/pollen back to the hives. Also another story was done about this in 1999. But now it's just on a whole new level.

People ignored it then. now we are facing a very big problem.

ha ha......Killer bees are just another human experiment that kind of went wrong. Cross breeding, lost queens, oops, voila.

I think its obvious this is a result of global warming and climate change. Its not as if we needed yet another piece of evidence to show we are all doomed if we dont change our way of life.

It also shows why I think all life is connected, why I am a buddhist and why I am a vegetarian, and why I am pacifist.

One wouldnt think the death of bees would have much impact. But as articles from CNN point out, 90 percent of our food comes from polinated stuff or from bees related products.

This is going to have major ramifications. Its sad.

The Honeybee is not native to North America.......the British brought it to these shores 400 years ago......made 400 years is the limit for a non-native species???? That's a joke, people.

There are 1000's of bee species......some are just better at pollinating the non-native crops (non-native to North America, that is.)

What evidence is there to suggest the trend recently for bears now is to refuse to hibernate, what evidence is there to suggest this is not global warming caused?

How about the fact that the last 7 years or so have been some of the hottest years in the history of western civ. What evidence is there to suggest that this is global warming caused?

The proof is in the pudding.

I love it how humans never believe things, until its too late.

You really want to gamble and say this is non climate change based?

What evidence suggests it ISNT global warming based?

Humans have ruined the world, they have pulluted the air, bulldozed habitats, cut down trees, paved roads on previously lived on land...

and now they have the audacity to continue to deny, deny deny deny

Global warming is real. if people want to act like nimrod Limbaugh and suggest its just liberal propaganda, they are seriously gambling with their own future and their childrens future.

Bees are dying as a result of global warming. Case closed. I have yet to hear a more plausible answer.

Well, earlier in the week it was due to cell phones. Who knows what the latest hot Internet conspiracy theory will produce.

    Climate is the likely suspect.

However, I remember reading about the spread of the africanized honey bees (killer bees). They spread due to an increase in climate temperature.

I don't know enough about bees to say that this is true for other species though.

Every story I've read about the bees has been focused on the U.S. and Canada. Does anyone know if the same thing being observed with bees on other continents?
