McCain: I'd Prefer Christian President
September 30, 2007 01:17 AM EST |
WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain said in an interview published Saturday that he would prefer a Christian president over someone of a different faith, calling it "an important part of our qualifications to lead."
In an interview with Beliefnet, a multi-denominational Web site that covers religion and spirituality, the Republican presidential hopeful was asked if a Muslim candidate could be a good president.
"I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles ... personally, I prefer someone who I know who has a solid grounding in my faith," McCain said. "But that doesn't mean that I'm sure that someone who is Muslim would not make a good president."
Later, McCain said, "I would vote for a Muslim if he or she was the candidate best able to lead the country and defend our political values."
Asked about Republican rivals Mitt Romney's Mormon faith, McCain said, "I think that Governor Romney's religion should not, absolutely not, be a disqualifying factor when people consider his candidacy for president of the United States."
The Arizona senator was also asked about the confusion over which Christian denomination he belongs to. "I was raised Episcopalian, I have attended the North Phoenix Baptist Church for many years and I am a Christian," McCain said. He added that he has considered being baptized in the Baptist church, but he does not want to do it during the presidential race because "it might appear as if I was doing something that I otherwise wouldn't do."

how bout just a good dose of some old fashion honesty, sincerety, and public servitude ... instead of bullshit lies, smarmy smirks, and corporate cock sucking?
I'd take that over religion in a heart beat!
If I opened it now would you not understand?

is this a masculinity thing, and what is the basis of the statement?

why? why should we care what a person belives in? surley we should be concerned with their leadership skills, views, manifesto, assertivness, personality etc....

I think it's just the Republican's way of saying that a Party that prays together probably also poops together.

I guess he is gay too. He wants to touch feet w/ Larry Craig.
Chistian gay guys for Prez! It is the new GOP afterall.
Democrats: "We agree."
the nation was founded with Christian principles...it's true
he prefers what he prefers, what's the problem?
bonehead.
it's not a problem.
but to me its a bit over simplistic.
if your leading indicator of "good candidate" is just "yay! they're christian" ... i'd have to question the analytic process a little ...
... i just don't see that as the best, most relevant, or even remotely close to the number one indicator of a candidates ability to perform the function of president.
and most politicians who claim to be religious have their head so far up their ass it is laughable.
how bout like i said earlier, just pick someone who speaks real truth, speaks it with candor and takes action in the interest of the people.
If I opened it now would you not understand?
umm, most politicians have their heads up their asses PERIOD!
"how bout like i said earlier, just pick someone who speaks real truth, speaks it with candor and takes action in the interest of the people"
i have no problem with that statement...but find one that does that!
edit - i'm too dumb to use the quote feature
i'd rather follow a "practicing" Christian than anyone else..they would speak the truth, with candor etc....
problem is, when they do, people hammer them.
ok by me, it's the U.S., we get to do that here...
better than being beheaded for speaking yr mind....
gwb is supposedly a practicing Christian and he started a preemptive war killing hundreds of thousands. Not very christian like
i did say they have their heads up their ass.
these days, when a politician says they are religious, i get the feeling they are doing so only because
a. they know it gets them brownie points & votes
b. they can use religion as a shield ...
oh well, what i did may be horribly immoral but look look, i'm a christian! see! god will forgive me!
yes.
woo hoo!
If I opened it now would you not understand?
besides, ok so bfd if america was founded on christian principles; does that mean american women should be submissive and obedient to their husbands like the bible demands? i mean, hey, over 200 years ago some guys decided to make an independent nation founded upon principles littered and filled with christian ideals...i guess that means we should close our minds off to any alternative ideas and beliefs forever right?
hmm...
it's sad someone would put religious perspectives above any other considerations for a leader. hitler was a christian...i'd totally vote for him before some asshole athiest! mmm-hmmmm!
Does it inspire?

i don't like people who claim to be something then they're not.
i'm talking about someone who is truly following their faith.
while a Christian, old george did what he thought was in the best interest of america. i'd rather him stop taking crap off of the assheads, than what clinton did. world trade 1, the cole, blackhawlk down (i can spell it, too lazy to look it up) all attacks against america, didn't do squat...looked like a bunch of pantywaists. it gave them hope they could take us down.
uncle leo - well, that's what the bible says...take it up with God
catefrances - i agree with yr last comment "never vote for etc" but anyone running HAS to tell all. they grill them until they are dirt, ask every question under the sun. thanks for helping with the quote thing, uummm, as you can see i don't quite get it yet!
Yes, nothing like those good 'ole Christian principles!
Christian principle #1:
Slaughter Native Americans off the continent. Genocide is a tried and true option, utilized by human beings of all religions, all over the planet and through out the history of human beings. Native Americans don't seem to be as accepting and subservient of our Christian principles, as we had hoped. Besides, they smell funny.
well, i'm pretty sure the bible said to kill all the indians, didn't it?
jeeze, Christ taught what was right and good. we screw it up.
you can label a whole people such as "Christians" as never living out their faith, right?
but if i were to label a whole group such as "blacks" "spics" etc, as anything that cover an entire group, you would bust a gut!
the mirror is yr friend
I'm not a big fan of Clinton, but I hate when the example of the WTC bombings of '93 are brought up as him not doing anything.
Ten militant Islamist conspirators, including Ramzi Yousef (who was widely considered the real mastermind), were convicted for their part in the bombing and were given prison sentences of a maximum of 240 years each.
No one knew the size and organization of Al Qaeda or other terrorists organizations then, and we didn't have success in going up the food chain to bigger fish. Bush did the right thing in going into Afghanistan, but Iraq was a whole other clusterfuck that had nothing to do with 9/11 or global terrorism.
The USS Cole happened a month before his successor was elected. After all his fuckups, he didn't even have enough political clout for his VP to use campaigning, do you think he could have gotten away with attacking another country?

you do realize the terrorists weren't from Iraq right?
there were no weapons of mass destruction???
the crap the administration used to persuade guilible americans were trumped up?
Iraq was done for one reason....money and oil....thats it...plain and simple...and your christian president is responsible for ending the lives of 100's of thousands of humans.....oh oh..and a couple christians.
What did it have to do with the first gulf war? That war was about the invasion of Kuwait.... we attacked Iraq, and they left Kuwait... all done. What else was there to do, it was finished?

well i just don't see how something as personal as faith is anybody's business.

A practicing Christian like... Ted Haggard?

Guess someone has some rehab in their future.
