how many times have you been to church? i've went for somewhere around 20 years and studied theology at my catholic college prep yet politics has never once been mentioned. so i'm asking where you get this information and how can you back it with fact?
i started going when i was a little kid. the last time was christmas i believe (i like to appease my mother when it's important to her). i also did 13 years of catholic school. our religious course junior year on "christian social justice." what they did was tell you what votes were acceptable for a catholic on a number of issues. the prior year we had similar courses on sexual politics that gave the same misinformation about contraception's ineffectiveness and the evils of such groups as planned parenthood. around election time in 04, people's cars were plastered with fliers telling them they could not vote for kerry becos he was pro-life.
there was also a large scandal here in ohio where the former secretary of state was aligned with an ohio big wig who was essentially telling his massive regional congregation how to vote. then there was ted haggard and his active political lobbying against equality for homosexuals, using his megachurch following and his status as a pastor or reverend or whatever to lend authority to his orders.
then watch jesus camp and see how they're already telling children that this is the way the political system should be becos jesus wants it that way.

wow; i've never encountered that. that sounds like other groups that preach what they believe.
As I stated above, it only appears that way because of the close ties our current president has with that movement. Even if a Republican, with the exception of Mitt Romney, wins in 08 there influence will wain. The moderates in this country far out number the ultra conservatives and ultra liberals in this country and I believe that they are tired of being ignored in favor of focusing on the the extreme polarizing factions.
sorry it goes beyond that to me ... almost everyone now who wins anything whether they are an athlete or musician or actor is thanking god ... god bless you is everywhere in america especially in the smaller towns ... its slightly subtle ... but its there ... if u live in a big city - it may not be as prevalent but in the smaller towns for sure ...
The operative word being "the few". The ultra-conservative Christian right represents a minority of Christians in this country. The problem is that they are well connected and extremely well organized. They have unified under one banner and are making their voices heard. The majority of Christians in this country keep their faiths to themselves and are not in the business of imposing their faith on an entire nation.
Agreed 100%. Good luck with this line of reasoning though. It doesn't really fly around these parts. Stereotyping while claimimg to be openminded is apparently much easier and alot more popular.
"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."
People like that Lady at the grocery store make me sick, and sometimes sad to call myself a Christian. I hate being lumped together with people like that. I just took a job with Young Life, it's a non-denominational Christian organization that works with middle school and high school kids. One of the biggest challenges is dealing with the backlash that can come when people, like the Lady at the grocery store or a guy like Haggard, do the stupid things they do.
There are always kooks out there, and there will always be good and bad examples of religious followers. What was that quote from Ghandi? "I love your Christ, but hate you christians?" Something like that......
The wind is blowing cold
Have we lost our way tonight?
Have we lost our hope to sorrow?
Feels like were all alone
Running further from what’s right
And there are no more heroes to follow
Christianity has evolved a lot, believe it or not, a few extremists notwithstanding. People bash this particular religion because it is "acceptable" bashing, or stereotyping. We as a society can handle bashing our own religious roots, so everyone from "emo" high school students right up to our own politicians and professors bashes away. I find it a bit tiresome, to be frank, and I am hardly a devout Christian. Christianity is no longer the root problem of our society's ills, and in fact, is a source of comfort for many.
religious nuts always loose every bit of religious credibility they hide behind becuase they prove they are the exact opposite of the 'good' teachings. Good and evil both exist in the bible and it holds a mirror up to yourself for everyone else to see whenever you speak of it.
So I was at work last night (I manage a grocery store) and one of my guys in produce came up to me and said some lady came up to him and commented on his pierced ears, and told him that only women should get their ears pierced and that he's going to hell and whoever pierced his ears owns him for the rest of his life. He said she started reciting passages from the bible to him, and then told him that his earings were ugly! She asked if he went to church and if he wore his earing during the service.
Now I don't know what I am, I'm at a very confusing stage in my life as far as religion goes, and I definatley don't consider myself a christian because I refuse to live my life a certain way to please anyone. But this made me realize how hipocritical most christians can be, just because they live there lives a certain way, why do they think everyone else has to?
Why single out christianity as wrong? Buddhism, Islam, and the other eastern religions (like shintoism) are equally stupid. Not to mention agnostics.

they just make it easy for us. approaching us thinking we need saving. if i need the lord in my life i'll come to you. in the meantime keep the hell away from me.
hear my name

"US"? I like how you used that one word. With "us", you made your opinion into the opinion of every nonchristian on the planet. Good going. Try "approaching me thinking I need saving." Because otherwise you're insinuating that you represent everyone.

'US' meaning those that they approach thinking they need saving. i certainly wasn't speaking for all the non christians in the world. nor would i even attempt to.

Please don't confuse Christians and idiots. Sure there are idiots who are Christians, but they are in the minority. There are also non-Christian idiots.

Would you have the same attitude if someone pushes you out of the way of oncoming traffic? Only if he/she was a Christian I suppose...
The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.

I would be very grateful. But I think that's a bad comparison. A car is something real, I can go outside and touch it, if it hits me hard enough it can kill me, or severly hurt me. God is a concept, a belief. I lack that faith or belief. I see it more like we're all on a plane and none of us know what will happen, some believe if we don't get out we'll die, some don't. So you believe we'll die if we stay on it so you try to push us out of the plane. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll make my own choices, I don't know a single person who doesn't know about god or Jesus, there's really no need to push it into our face.
I can't say there have been many Christians who were trying to "save" me (only when I was in the States, people of faith tried to save me 4 times), though.

Faith is real to the person who has it. Therefore it's a valid comparison.

So are you telling me that if we're on that plane, and the goddess Athena tells me that everyone needs to get off the plane right this instant, and I shove you off the plane, which goes on to land safely ... that would be ok with you as long as it was "real" to me?

Please, I know you can differentiate between causing someone physical harm and and telling them that Athena is damning them for all time.
If someone told me Athena, Buddha, Allah or Papa Joe Smurf were condemning me to hell because I have tats I'd shrug it off. I'd find it annoying but I'd shrug it off. If someone told me that God was condemning me to hell I'd find it annoying and shrug it off.

it's not a matter of acceptable, it's a matter of what we deal with. id bash extreme muslims, but i dont really have to deal with them in my day to day life. thus why you all see it as "acceptable" to bash christians and no one else. it'not acceptance, it's relevance. the christians are the ones manipulating american politics. the muslims are not. nor are the jews. nor are the hindus. etc etc. thus why you see christian bashing. becos they're the ones making themselves a target.

I just don't understand why religious folks feel the need to bug the shit out of people. Find me someone who doesn't know about Christ. We're adults, we can make up our own minds, if there's anything that will make us turn to god it certainly isn't annoying Christians.
And even if you can find someone there's still the eskimo story.

and this original poster was annoyed and ranted about it here. how is this a problem? also, when there's a recurring pattern of annoyance, what's the harm in calling them out on it?

Me to, and I am one! Thats still no excuse to stereotype. As a matter of fact, alleged Christians such as this lady bug me more than you. Trust me.
Its only fair to point out that some non-Christians, man- they bug the shit outta me also.
