So I was at work last night (I manage a grocery store) and one of my guys in produce came up to me and said some lady came up to him and commented on his pierced ears, and told him that only women should get their ears pierced and that he's going to hell and whoever pierced his ears owns him for the rest of his life. He said she started reciting passages from the bible to him, and then told him that his earings were ugly! She asked if he went to church and if he wore his earing during the service.

Now I don't know what I am, I'm at a very confusing stage in my life as far as religion goes, and I definatley don't consider myself a christian because I refuse to live my life a certain way to please anyone. But this made me realize how hipocritical most christians can be, just because they live there lives a certain way, why do they think everyone else has to?

  • anyone with narrow bigoted views should not spout off in public but they are the ones that usually do. My gran and her 2 sisters are a case in point. All three claim to be Christians. My gran is the biggest hypocrite to walk the earth, her millionaire sister has a lot to say about the wayward youths but donates lots of money to giving bibles to poor ppl, and the third is a true christian with a sense of humor about religion. She gave her grandson a birthday card that read "Jesus loves you" on the front and inside said "But everyone else thinks you're a wanker!" Religion is meant to be a personal relationship between you and the divinity of your choice and not be forced down anyone else's throat

I wouldn't say that most Christians are hipocritical. Every religion is going to have hipocritical or pushy zealots as followers but I wouldn't judge millions of believers on the actions of a few.

The operative word being "the few". The ultra-conservative Christian right represents a minority of Christians in this country. The problem is that they are well connected and extremely well organized. They have unified under one banner and are making their voices heard. The majority of Christians in this country keep their faiths to themselves and are not in the business of imposing their faith on an entire nation.

although i definitely do not think all christians are like this lady ... i do feel that america is becoming more and more a fundamentalist country ... where church is becoming more and more a dictator of policy ...

As I stated above, it only appears that way because of the close ties our current president has with that movement. Even if a Republican, with the exception of Mitt Romney, wins in 08 there influence will wain. The moderates in this country far out number the ultra conservatives and ultra liberals in this country and I believe that they are tired of being ignored in favor of focusing on the the extreme polarizing factions.

what about newt gingrich and his contract with america that launched the conservative revolution in the 90s? that was all based upon his ties to falwell, jenkins, and christian moral legislation.

How is it anymore hypocritical and bigoted than taking what one crazy lady at a grocery store said and automatically assuming all Christians are that way? What made you attack Christians about it anyway? Why didn't you just assume it was all WOMEN? Or all shoppers at that store???

Heck, maybe she's not even a Christian, but someone whose going around and trying to turn people against Christians? Ever think of that?

Have you ever heard someone who wasn't a Christian use the phrase "go to hell"? I have.

You're nitpicking anyway as you know that wasn't my point.

Yeah, that's what she was doing. "You have earrings? Go to hell!"

I don't entirely disagree with you, though. It's just, some Christians, man - they bug the shit outta me.

No, I haven't but I know non-Christians say it too. But have you heard many non-Christians reciting verses from the Bible, or asking people if they go to church?

Her bitching came from her religious beliefs and not from her womanhood, or from shopping there.

    You're right, it's a sweeping generalisation.

So do some atheists, muslims, buddhists, democrats, republicans, eco-freaks. Basically, some people regardless of their religion bug the shit out of me.

first; you shouldn't condemn 87% of the population because of the actions of a few. many athiests live religious lifestyles (or at least lifestyles as described in the 10 commandments) and deny being religious. the 10 commandments is the name of a document. it actually contains 619 commandments. most of which make up the constitution and almost all laws. they are 619 laws for living peacefully with eachother. now i don't know if living God's law yet denying his existance makes you religious or not; but i believe that woman broke God's law and stepped out of the bounds of religion.

im just saying that the christian fundamentalists have a stranglehold on the republican politics, so christian politics are here to stay. look at what john mccain is doing now to curry their favor... new stance on abortion, bob jones visits. it's not waning, it's on the rise.

Why should it bother anyone where the drive for policy comes from. If it's an electable platform and is constitutional that's all that should matter.

How is it a theocracy when the Constitution and Bill of Rights is adhered to? This is the biggest bullshit fear mongering lie being told by the left. By adhering to democratic elections, the Constitutions, the Bill Rights and the balance of power a theocracy is impossible.

only if people oppose a total religious agenda, which is what im doing by criticizing them. if we're supposed to shut up and take it, what's to stop them? im not allowed to criticize their platform bu they're allowed to run on it?

furthermore, i find religious politics to be lazy. it's a matter of people deciding what they want to believe, referring to their 3000 year old book to back it up, and then telling their followers how to vote. it's lazy democracy. many of these people will vote for whoever their pastor tells them to and not out of any sense of sensible national policy. it leads to inefficient and unproductive legislation that is "feel good" for moral folks but accomplishes nothing and distracts from confronting real problems. i have the same issue with people who take all their voting cues from prisonplanet and vote based on their 9/11 conspiracy guru or out of some paranoia that there's a giant conspiracy to rule the world by 12 guys who meet in a redwood forest. it's not a sound basis for public policy, it's skewed, unrealistic, and lazy.

and it's still the best system around. The issue is not the religious right, or eco-freaks. It's people who don't care and are lazy.

Sorry if I came off as a tad aggressive.

how many times have you been to church? i've went for somewhere around 20 years and studied theology at my catholic college prep yet politics has never once been mentioned. so i'm asking where you get this information and how can you back it with fact?

I'm a very regular church goer and I often attend various churches because I've moved farther away from my home church and I'm trying to find a new one that's closer. I'll have to say that I do not recall a pastor at any church I've ever been to tell people how to vote.

It's just uninformed paranoia or prejudice to think it's a common occurence.
