I still don't get, however, why Obama can come out two hours after the story breaks and say it's off-limits while you haven't seen McCain get up and make a similar statement this entire campaign about the viral smears regarding Obama.
Real easy.. because it hits close to home. If people chose to attack Bristol (and sarah) Palin over this, they are, by extension attacking the choices Baracks mother made in being an 18 year old single mother. Its like making a "retard" joke in front of a person with a mentally handicapped sibling.
Another point.. The only reason this was made into news was because it was the only way to put to rest the whole stupid internet rumors that Sarah Palins youngest son is actually her daughters. The extreme liberal internet media and blogs had jumped all over this, and the uncertainty of that likely would have been far more damaging than a teen who made the same bad decision thousands do every year.

Maybe, but it seems much more likely that Obama was practicing the kind of politics he's been preaching (that McCain has been preaching as well). It's one thing to say you're trying to be above the fray, but it's another to actually address the divisive issue at hand. With the Republicans, there have been smear campaigns that Obama is a Muslim (and that the Republicans have used that as a smear campaign is racist in itself, but I digress), that he's a terrorist and went to a madrassa, that he hates America, that his wife hates America. All of this is false, but thus far McCain hasn't said a word about it; why? Why not admonish his supporters who use these techniques, as Obama did yesterday to his? If McCain truly is about a 'new kind of politics' he hasn't shown it so far.
very irrelevant. I cant believe dems would actually even bring this up.
It should be bought up because there are questions that need to be asked about McCain. If he knew why not disclose the info earlier to prew\vent it getting out the way it did. Now it just seems as if they where trying to hide this information. If he didn't know then you have to question his vetting process. Also why would a parent but their daughter through this. I know that if my teenage daughter was pregnant I sure as hell would accept the VP nod. The scrutiny that comes with that position would only result in my pregnant daughter being put in the spot light. Being pregnant at that age has to be hard enough never mind all the media attention heaped on top of it.

it doesnt need to be disclosed because its nobody's business. secondly, mccain is not "trying to hide it"

Eh. I think you're giving Obama too much credit- and not enough credit at the same time. Did you see the video? There seemed to be a definite raw emotion to what he was saying- it obviously hit him close to home- i respect that. However, i dont think he did it just to practice the politics he's preaching. I think it was coming from a very honest non-manipulative place. If he was just trying to do that- he would have left it at "I dont think thats fair to discuss" or ignored it all together.
The McCain comparison doesnt really seem valid to me.. as Its not like Obama spoke out about the whole "Sarah Palin is really the GRANDMOTHER" nonsense.. he didnt say a word until the legitimate story came out. Neither he, nor mccain have denounced the absolute nonsense innuendo that is bound to be bandied about between now and november... and they shouldnt... that would just give it credability.

It is no bodies business but in this day and age the media scrutinizes every aspect of our politicians personal lives. This poor girl is going through enough being so young and pregnant so I would question Palin judgement for putting her daughter through this or are they so niave in Alaska that she didn't think the media wouldn't feast on this.
I also don't think that McCain tried to hide it, in fact I'm willing to bet that McCain didn't even know about it which calls into question his ability as well. Regardless of how we feel, this is a potentially damaging revelation. Why select someone with this type of baggage to be your VP.
They could have easily made this information known from day 1. By not doing so it just seems that they where trying to keep this out of the public eye. Their intentions are irrevelent because in the end it comes down to what the public perseives

The thing is they didn't try and hide it. They just didn't publicize it as its no one's business. Everyone in their home town knew Bristol was pregnant.

That is just splitting hairs. The nation at large had no idea and if it was public knowledge back in Alaska then why not just come out and say it up front. Again it's about public perception. I personally believe, or would like to believe, that they didn't mention this from day one was to respect Bristol's privacy. That doesn't mean that other's will see it that way and in an election public perception is everything. If 3 days after you annouce you VP pick all this info is starting to leak it just looks bad. If they would have stated this on Friday there still would have been the media coverage and McCain detracters would have still brought this up in a negative light but the illusion of deception would not have existed. Notice not many people are questioning Palin's ability to be our VP because her daughter is pregnat. Most are talking about why this wasn't disclosed up front. They could have avoided all of this by just being forth coming. Now all their exuses just look like political spin.

I truly think they never would have brought up Bristol's pregnancy if the left wing blogs didn't start rumors that Palin didn't exhibit proper pre natal care and is responsible for Trigg's Down syndrome or that the Palin is the grandmother. If those stories weren't pushed by extreme left bloggers, the family would have never announced Bristol's pregnancy. There is no reason that they should have disclosed it as it's a private matter between the Palin and Johnston families.

My impression (as stated above) is that they had no intention of coming forward, however, all the internet speculation regarding Sarah Palin's youngest son needed to be debunked right away.. and this was the best way to do it, as ultimately it would have come out eventually.
I also think the timing was intentional.. they tried to sneak it out on a Holiday weekend when 90% of the news coverage was already accounted for with the Hurricanes.
just because republicans do it, doesnt make it alright for dems. don't exploit a teenage girl to score points against republicans. argue about teen pregnancy in more respectable ways.
i guess democrats can be proud that they have their own swiftboat captains for truth now!
Quite acting like the democrats made this an issue. McCain's people knew of this pregnancy even before they made the public announcement of Palin's selection. The fact that Governor Palin is allowing her daughter to be used as a holier than though, pro life poster child just shows what kind a parent she is. This has become just a sinful media display of a mother whoring out her daughter for the good of the Party. Let's hope the supreme court appreciates the trouble.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.
Personally, I think what may end up being more scandalous (if that's even the right word) is that she hired a lawyer regarding this whole state trooper scandal (which I, admittedly, know very little about). While it may be the smart move legally, I doubt it looks good to people that three days after the VP nominee is announced that VP nominee gets a lawyer about a scandal she's involved in. I think (luckily for the young teenager who shouldn't have to go through this bullshit) this story will fade relatively quickly.
If Sarah Palin wants to control the way our children receive sex education, and wants to alter or take away our reproductive rights so that there are no "choices" to make, how can she ask us not to discuss the choices her own family has made? If these are private matters for her family, why shouldn't they be for mine?
unfortunately, i feel that's what they want in the sex ed context... no sex ed in school at all, so that they can shelter their kids and keep them in a small, sex-free bubble.
this is only relevant insofar as palin wants to promote an abstinence-only sex ed program that clearly does not even work in a devout home with involved parents.

I found this article from the Politico very interesting and it covers a lot that has been discussed so far: i.e. Bristol, Troopergate, etc. :
Without getting into who screened Sarah Palin and who didn't, or whether Bristol Palin's sex life is appropriate to discuss-
I would just like to ask (as a parent), what kind of a mother does this to her daughter? Regardless of the screening process, Sarah Palin knew that Bristol was pregnant, and yet she still accepted the VP nom.
Who does that? What type of person deliberately puts their own child through this type of scrutiny?

Quit acting like republicans are secretly behind it all. democrats did make this an issue. how many threads were on this message board about sarah faking a pregnancy? how many threads about her teenage daughter are here now? ALL STARTED BY LIBERALS.
this isn't some republican scheme. its democrats chomping at the bit to prove how twofaced republicans are, regardless of who gets exploited.
and the fact that republicans dumped the truth on Gustav day just means they are smart to sweep it all under the rug. democrats would be wise to follow suit. like Obama has already said.

They annouced it because they knew the media was about to. It would have been far worse for this information to get out by some Woodward and Bernstein wanna be. Yes it is a family matter and yes it should have no impact on how Palin would do her job, but we all know that the media does not feel the same way. The media will make a mountain out of a mole hill. Had they just come forward from the beginning it could have been averted. As I said most of the talk is not about Palin being a bad politician because her kid is pregnant. Most of the talk is why didn't they just disclose the info on Friday. It doesn't matter what their reasons are because the public will believe what it wants to.
Let me ask this. I see some people on her blaming the Democrats and/or liberal bloggers. What do you think would have happened if it was say Obama's or Biden's teenage daughter that was pregnant. Do you think Fox news or the Limbaughs and Hannitys of the world would have laid off. They would have ripped that poor family to shreds on the air. I'm also damn sure the Christian right would have verbally crusified the family as well.

I read that yesterday, and it's an interesting article. To give credit where credit's due, the Republicans in this election (and in the past few presidential elections), have been amazingly successful at painting the Democratic candidate as an eltist snob out of touch with ordinary voters when it is the Republican candidate who has the "silver spoon" background. I'm talking about public perception; it just doesn't look good to have the Veep candidate getting a lawyer a few days into the campaign. It'll look like you have something to hide. I'm not saying it's fair or true; I'm saying how it'll probably look to people.

It would have been fucking nasty, and anyone saying otherwise is deluding themselves.

Exactly. I know I would treasure my child's privacy during a difficult time far more than the advancement of my political career.

The democrats didnt.
The extreme left blogs and such with the whole "Sarah Palin is the grandmother" thing was becoming a big story. It was probably, online, the number one thing being discussed in a lot of places. The democrats (as a party) had nothing to do with it.
However, it was something that needed to be refuted by Palin and the Campaign... so they did in the only 100% effective way possible- by proving it could not have been Bristols son... I fail to see how its whoring out her daughter. They announced it on a Holiday (less people watching the news) when the biggest News Story of the year was being heavily covered. If it was a whoring out, it would have waited until the middle of the convention when the whole media was watching her... not Gustav.

you have to put your career on hold and stop everything because your kid gets knocked up? jesus christ, some of the left wing people here act like a teenager and her family should be shamed for life for getting pregnant. its not that huge of a deal. bad yes, but hardly the end of the world. happens all the time. i doubt conservatives will care much, since she didnt abort. if anything its fine cuz she's getting married and raising the kid.

So your saying you would want your teenage daughter to endure all the media attention simply because you want to be VP. The media is not going t6o be as nice as Obama. They have no fucking scrupples. They only care about ratings. If dragging this kid through the mud boosts ratings they will do exactly that. The last thing I would want is for my 17 year old kid to be portrayed as some type of trashy whore all over the news.

No, they wouldnt have laid off. Not at all. Doesnt make it right though.
My belief is the only reason this was addressed NOW is that they had to combat the bullshit speculation regarding Sarah's youngest son that i think we can all agree now is patently untrue?
Thats my complaint on the Extreme Liberal Blogs/Media... they ran and perpetuated an untrue story.
Which ultimately forced Palin to disprove them.

Yes they would and now they're seeing this as a plus in that she's keeping the baby and getting married. You see that was made clear when this was announced. The CR says she just made a mistake and now she's doing the right thing, there's a lot more as to why Sarah Palin was choosen as VP. Alot and it has to do with money, raising funds which has been woefully lacking.

Couple things..
what 17 year old girl that gets knocked up doesnt either
A. Lie to themselves they are going to marry the guy
B. Lie to their parents they are going to marry the guy
What do you want them to say? Do you want them to come out and say "Boy this little whore Loves COck!! But hey, at least he's white!!!"

My impression (as stated above) is that they had no intention of coming forward, however, all the internet speculation regarding Sarah Palin's youngest son needed to be debunked right away.. and this was the best way to do it, as ultimately it would have come out eventually.
I also think the timing was intentional.. they tried to sneak it out on a Holiday weekend when 90% of the news coverage was already accounted for with the Hurricanes.
i guess democrats can be proud that they have their own swiftboat captains for truth now!
unfortunately, i feel that's what they want in the sex ed context... no sex ed in school at all, so that they can shelter their kids and keep them in a small, sex-free bubble.
this is only relevant insofar as palin wants to promote an abstinence-only sex ed program that clearly does not even work in a devout home with involved parents.
I found this article from the Politico very interesting and it covers a lot that has been discussed so far: i.e. Bristol, Troopergate, etc. :

what a bad choice by McCain... he tried to pull off the ultimate pander, and it will backfire big time
I would just like to ask (as a parent), what kind of a mother does this to her daughter? Regardless of the screening process, Sarah Palin knew that Bristol was pregnant, and yet she still accepted the VP nom.
Who does that? What type of person deliberately puts their own child through this type of scrutiny?
this isn't some republican scheme. its democrats chomping at the bit to prove how twofaced republicans are, regardless of who gets exploited.
and the fact that republicans dumped the truth on Gustav day just means they are smart to sweep it all under the rug. democrats would be wise to follow suit. like Obama has already said.
If it was a whoring out, it would have waited until the middle of the convention when the whole media was watching her... not Gustav.
Peace

Couple things..
what 17 year old girl that gets knocked up doesnt either
A. Lie to themselves they are going to marry the guy
B. Lie to their parents they are going to marry the guy
What do you want them to say? Do you want them to come out and say "Boy this little whore Loves COck!! But hey, at least he's white!!!"
