CLEVELAND - A high school student said Thursday that he and classmates had warned their principal about threats by a classmate who shot and wounded four people before killing himself, and believed the attack could have been prevented. The student, Rasheem Smith, said on CBS’ “Early Show” that despite their warnings about the student who opened fire Wednesday, Asa H. Coon, principal Johneita Durant told them she was too busy. Smith said that the shooting may have been prevented, and that it was known Coon had a gun. “He was talking about doing it last week,” he said. Armed with two revolvers, Coon opened fire at the alternative school, wounding two students and two teachers. He had a history of mental problems and was known for cursing at teachers and bickering with students.

Police found a duffel bag stocked with ammunition and three knives in a bathroom, but no suicide note, Police Chief Michael McGrath said. Police believe Coon, wearing a Marilyn Manson shirt, black jeans and black nail polish, targeted the two teachers he shot Wednesday.Coon’s troubles seemed to come to a breaking point this week. Students said Monday’s fight was over God — Coon told his classmates he didn’t believe in God and instead worshipped rocker Marilyn Manson.

Ballad of the Kingsmen - Todd Snider

The Kingsmen came together in a garage,
    They could hardly even play
But they practiced night and day pretty soon
They got to where they could really play that song Louie, Louie
So they saved up all the money from the shows
Went in to one of them studios and gave their version of the song a try

Now, I don't know the words to that song Louie, Louie
And I'm pretty sure the singer for the Kingsmen didn't know them either,
If he did know them he didn't get them right on the record
Cause on the record they sound jumbled in his jaw
It says, "Me think of me girl oh so constantly
    Ahmayaaah makaaaah aahh ooohoooh aaaaah"
Well, that last part scared everybody from the PTA to the FBI
You see, the kids had been going kinda crazy lately
And it seemed like nobody could figure out why
So they decided to form a coalition,
Launch an investigation, you know for the children, they at least had to try
To figure out the words to Louie, Louie

It's the feel good hit of this endless summer
It gets these kids out of control
Singing along to that star spangled bummer
    Hail, hail rock and roll

Marilyn Manson's real name isn't even Marilyn Manson
He's a skinny public high school kid from Florida
Not some monster from out of this world
And like of a lot other skinny long hair public high school kids
He was sick of getting beaten up by the pulling guard all week
Only to go out on the weekend and watch the quarterback get all the girls
So he formed a band, man
Now he gets all the girls
A few years later a couple of latch-key kids go tragically mad
And everybody's standing around the television store at the mall trying to figure out what went wrong
This guy says, "You think the life of a kid going to high school could've gotten so bad?"
This other guy says "Nah, it's just the words to one of them goddamn Marilyn Manson songs"
    You know the one

It's the feel good hit of this endless summer
It gets these kids out of control
Singing along to that star spangled bummer
    Hail, hail rock and roll

You know, every ten years or so our country and some other little country
We start firing all of our newest weapons at each other
For some reason or another, right or wrong, like it or not, it happens
And when it happens people get shot and when people get shot
They show it on TV a lot every night at six o'clock
And you don't even have to be eighteen to see it
You don't even have to be in first grade
First grade where they teach the kid pride
They tell him he'll need to thrive
In a world where only the strong will survive
So he's taught the art of more
To compare to and to keep score Monday through Friday while
He stares at the floor 'til Sunday they make him go to school once more
Only this time they make him wear a suit and a tie
And listen to some guy who claims to know where people go when they die
Tell him that only the meek are gonna inherit the earth
Well shit, by this time the kid doesn't know what anything is worth
Now brothers and sisters I am only one guy
And I don't even know the words to that song Louie, Louie
But I can tell you right now without batting an eye
That the next time some latch-key kid goes wrong
It aint gonna be cause that Eminem gets to say the word "fag" in his song
And I'm not trying to preach to you either,
I'm just trying to sing to you, you know, string a few words together

    Hey kids...
    Lets get it on
    Lets get it on

    :D:D

I'm assuming some of you think that people like Marilyn Manson and video games where you kill things the whole time do NOT influence youth then???

i'm saying it doesn't make you kill people, i'm proof of that. Things like bullying, social isolation, and child abuse make kids snap and kill people. Sounds to me like the kid experienced all three and was a little psycho to boot. And on rare occasions, people are just fucking crazy (Virginia Tech shooter).

    exactly!!!

this child was obviously deeply, deeply troubled. and it truly saddens me to think he had no one to talk to
about his anger, his aggression, his own sadness.

black clothing and nail polish do not make a killer.

It may not MAKE you kill people. But if you are experiencing trauma and then have suggestive influences that say...this or that...(use violence to solve it)...then that person may very well act on those suggestions.

If he was listening to Led Zepplin instead of that peckerneck manson...maybe he would still be alive...and there would be 5 less people shot.

I hear where you are coming from...but the designers of the video games where you kill...kill....kill.....and the singers of the songs that promote that same shit...have blood on their hands.

I'm sorry but, judging by your screen name I have to ask, are you high? I mean, Led Zeppelin? You've got to be kidding me. The backwords Satanic messages on Stairway to Heaven alone have resulted in more sexual depravity, murder, and spiritual damnation than all Manson's shit combined.

And who knows how many leapt to their deaths off the La Jolla cliffs after a particularly involving game of Q*Bert.

ok, i'm from the cleveland area and this was ALL over the news last night. here is what i know:
the shooter had a history of mental illness and police were called to his home several times. several students told the priciple at successtech that this kid was going to bring a gun to school. the pricipal wanted to schedule a sit down meeting in their office with all the parties involved. obviously, that never happened. the regular security guard (at the school) was not on duty yesterday, so the substitute guard was not aware of the shooters suspension.
so regardless of what he listened to, or what type of clothes he wore, there were several breakdowns in the security procedures.
it is just a very tragic situation

People still listen to Marilyn Manson? That is practically a news story by itself.
  • why is it the Manson goth kids that go crazy? You never hear about Slayer metalheads mowing down kids at a school, and their music is a lot more violent and graphic than some goofy Manson song. seems like Manson kids would go crazy and have sex change operations.

Maybe fans realize he sucks and decide to end it all. After realizing i just dedicated my life to Manson, I'd probably off myself too.

    It's my blood!!!!!!!

Somehow I don't agree with the fact that by playing video games and listening to certain music that it will be the final nail in the proverbial coffin of bad thoughts coming to fruition from some nut case with mental problems.

Maybe he should have been listening to Rage Against the Machine and kept repeating "fuck you I won't do what ya tell me" to his own brain.

The guy who listened to Suicide Solution while walking on the train tracks with a walkman on so loud that he couldn't hear the train when he got smoked wasn't under the influence of Ozzy.

The guy at the bar who runs out on his tab drunk, didn't listen to Have A Drink On Me by AC/DC and take it to heart.

The NRA supporters who like to have more then one gun probably listen to Glorified G before their meetings to stoke themselves.

why is it ALWAYS Marylin Manson..? Never Cannibal Corpse... Never Slayer?? I mean hell Nine inch Nails is depressing....

why not Hanson or the teletubbies or Jerry Falwell??

People who are suicidal fuckups are going to do what they are going to do regardless, music is an out. I'm going to imagine there are a lot more fucked up things going on in the home life.

Listen, people. It's spelled Led Zeppelin. Considering the fact that hard rock holds such undeniable power over our minds, our actions - hell, even our very souls - you'd be wise to not insult the grand masters of all that is unholy in music with your impudent misspellings.

See I usually get the urge when I hear a Michael Bolton song. His music just throws me into a rage that can only be cured by a massive shooting spree.

because for some reason, manson is the symbol for all that is wrong with the world. hell, more people have died as a result of bush's actions, than people that have died from manson's music

first off, none of the victims died other than the shooter, so he is not a murderer.

secondly, i will say that i am no manson fan and i think he is an idiot and his music really sucks. but i will defend him and say that it is always marilyn manson because he is easy to blame. with the way he dresses and what he says and sings scares the shit out of the establishment. adults just don't "get him". especially in the redneck parts of the country. it is easy to blame someone who has called himself antichrist superstar. he is different from the norm, and different is scary to alot of people.

people are always looking to blame someone else without examining themselves first. like the parents..."why would little johnny do such a thing? it must be that music he listens to. nevermind the fact that i am a shitty parent." parents and society are always apt to blame the boogeyman instead of looking to see where they failed and try to fix it so the next occurance does not happen.

Very true. So then the question is, would a "good" parent allow their child to listen to MM or other negative music?

You have done nothing but mention the "parent problem" in nearly everyone of your posts for the past few days.

    Let's cut to the chase.

    What's the deal here?
Lots of us have been victims of poor parenting choices. All parents are gonna fuck something up. It isn't the only thing. In fact, it isn't even the current thing. That is, unless you're still a kid.

Im not sure there is a "chase" however parenting is an enormous social ill. Far too many people today renig on their responsibility as parents and this causes a host of problems to the community as a whole.

Did you question the other posters as to why they involved parenting in their comment? What are you looking for?

That sounds about as generalized as anything else you have said, Juberoo. What I'm getting at and asking for is, what is your personal experience in this matter insomuch it as at the crux of so much of your argument?
