exactly. if you honestly think that someone would be perfectly ok with this because of their party affiliation, it shows your immaturity.

and to the poster that blames this on the people that voted for bush: maybe it's your fault it happened because not enough democrats voted for kerry.

    see, i can spin too.

No, you calling that out shows your lack of a sense of humor which people are losing these days.

Humor is the best repellant for the violent depression that all this stuff should be giving us.

First of all, don't E-V-E-R tell me what to say or not to say. I'll say what I fucking please.

Secondly, I started a thread last year about such transgressions by American soldiers who have been doing similar things for decades around the globe. The interest in it was luke warm at best. So why are Americans and others all of a sudden up in arms ? It's hardly a new phenomenon. And many of these didn't take place in the craziness of war, but in more sedate times and circumstances - so the American GI's had nothing else to blame but themselves. Maybe you should read up on all the good deeds perpetrated by American soldiers over the last 40-50 years in Japan and other places around the world where American soldiers are stationed.. It'll make your skin crawl.

My guess is that the same could be said of any military organization anywhere in the world. When you have a culture where the primary function of the training is to make people stop thinking for themselves, and it's primary reason for existing in the first place is to kill things and blow shit up, there will be rampant abuses. It's the nature of the beast.

sorry, can't find humor in saying someone with a different party affiliation than yours would defend this type of shit.

Well, I suspect it has something to do with the attitude of many American soldiers who see people in that part of the world as less-than. Over the last 3-4 years I can't tell you how many references I've seen to Muslims or Iraqis being "sand niggers" or that type of thing (according to American soldiers). Its a slippery slope. If you don't think of them as equal then you won't accord them the same respect or rights. You might even think that you can act with impunity. Catchin' my drift.....

Hippiemom, with all due respect, and I definitely respect you, your answer is kinda lame. Its lame because of the sheer number of transgressions at the hands of American GI's around the world. Oh how I wish this recent thing was an aberration - but it isn't. Sadly, its just the latest thing perpetrated by Americans who think they are either better-than, or who think they can get away with these types of crimes.

You need to get online and see why the people of Okinawa, for example, protested in the 000's, and wanted the Americans thrown out of the country. Look up the case of an American soldier in that country who raped and killed a young Japanese girl and then got off the charges. It happens alot, and I would say disproportionately for Americans, all things considered.

Yeah, I'm afraid you're probably right. That and they are so desensitized, their actions probably don't even seem horrific to them anymore. They've been turned into killing machines, though still human so they make these 'blimishes' on the image of the American Liberators from time to time and cause quite the embarassment for this admin. Kinda like training a pitbull to fight. Every now and again you'll read about one mouling a child to death. It's fucking sick to train young people to do shit like this...indiscriminately kill.
The difference is these guys are not dogs, they are humans who used to, at aleast, have the ability to reason. What they did is so disgusting, most normal people wouldn't even come close to thinking of treating animals the way they treated this poor famlily.

that's not what i meant. i was directing it at people saying republicans are ok with what happened. maybe it got mixed up there in the thread. the thought of someone saying "average joe republican" would act like that is what got under my skin. i guess we're not talking about the same thing. sorry about the mix up. but you understand what i'm saying, right?

you think NBC/ABC/CNN etc will pick this up?

    no way.

i mean they're liberal but they're afraid of covering anything like this I think. Afraid or paid off...

This isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened.

I am in NO WAY defending the American military here. I'm aware of our many transgressions and totally agree with you. My only point is that it's not limited to the American military. Look at what the Cambodian military did, the German military in WWII, look at what Israel is doing right now. Military culture makes people do things they would not do on their own. It does it in our country, and it does it elsewhere. As Americans, our primary concern is of course what is being done in our name and with our money, but it's hardly a uniquely American phenomenon.
