what in the FUCK is this nation thinking voting for a person like Barack Obama, who has had such questionable associations with America-hating churches and comes from a Muslim background, etc. I just can't believe what a blind move we have made. This man has proven nothing concerning how he can protect us when we are attacked by terrorists again, which we will be. he has NO experience. like it or not, we are still at war, for those of you who have forgotten. I wasn't nuts about McCain either, but we at least needed someone who could get us through the war instead of someone who is just going to pull us out of it. the rest of the world has got to be laughing their asses off at us right now.
The rest of the world aren't laughing at you. Well we are at YOU and your ilk, but we're very pleased for America.
I can't believe your main criticism of Obama is that he is from a muslim background... go away you bigoted idiot.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
if you actually read what I said, you'd notice the SAD TO SAY part. I'm not saying I think it's a good thing, but you need to wake up and realize that it's the truth. you think just because this guy has been elected means that all the skinheads AND black panthers are just gonna disappear? it goes both ways, buddy. it wouldn't surprise me if some nutbag KKK member or skinhead tries to take a shot at Obama if they got a clear view. just like it wouldn't surprise me if riots broke out in the streets if McCain got elected and all the militant blacks were pissed that America didn't give their candidate what we "owed" them by letting a black man be the president. haven't you been watching the news? they even interviewed that one klan member and he said very clearly that Obama will be a target if he's elected. it's a sad, sad world my friend. I didn't make a threat of any kind. I hope for the man's own sake that he will be well-protected. I just stated how the world really still is. deal with it.
So what you're saying is that the fact Obama is an assassination risk means he should never have been elected? Well fuck me! Half the presidents in history should have never got further than their canvassing campaigns then.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
we beat ignorance, biggotry, fear, and hatred, while also electing an intelligent, even mannered person with strong judgement skills who will surround himself with strong individuals, no yes people, and if smart, will govern from the left middle.
We did an amazing thing tonight, and to have given into the spin and fear would have been another huge failure in a string of failures.
What you said there is one of the most important points that I think McCain would have surely not done: I truly believe Obama is a big man who will surround himself with other big people during his term(s?) in the White House. Obama has portrayed himself throughout his campaign as a man who will not be satisfied with inadequacies in any way. He also seems like a man of action, AND words; a great combination. Here's hoping that won't stop now that he's in office!

Listen, Obama is one man...McCain is one man. What we proved last night is that all of us have a voice. We cannot assume because the other candidate was not chosen that this world is screwed. If Obama does a poor job...we all suffer. Have we not shown that our voice as American people is loud and strong? No one man can come in and make all things good, but hopefully his administration can lead us in a new, much needed direction. But we have to follow that lead.
It is painfully obvius that to keep fighting the way we have is not working in Iraq. How many more American lives have to be sacrificed? You are right, we are at war....but what mentality would serve us best.. a different approach, or the seek and destroy method that has served us so well in the past few years? I choose door #1
Speaking as a mom, AND a southerner (by the way) I am extremely proud to tell my son this morning when he opens his sweet little eyes that when we voted yesterday we helped change the world...the way the world sees us. We were not afraid to travel down a new road. Look at the world today...they are not laughing at us, they are cheering FOR us!
And all of those people you speak of that are sitting around taking our $$, well sir, they have only gotten lazier in the last 8 years. Hopefully now they will have a better opportunity to get an education, to become something better.
I am also realistic about the work we ALL need to do...we need to be more conscious about they way we consume, the energy we use. We need to work hard and save $$ so we are prepared for tough times.

Pack your bags and move to utopia my friend, cause you're not gonna find anything better than what you just got, and that, considering America's (and the entire world's) standards, is the closest to utopia you can get.

I happen to be one of the 1.5 million people that don't need to pay A CENT to go to college.... I happen to be the daughter of an amazing lawyer that finished a 6 year career for free and now is paying a bit more for the money she makes because she knows my kids may not have the opportunity to pay for private education... I happen to have seen extremely poor people be sick and have a bed in a hospital for absolutely nothing, and even if it's not as good as my shiny private hospital, it keeps them alive.
So yeah, I won't be required to pay taxes to Obama but I've been paying them here, and I've seen it makes a difference.

I will be paying off the $65,000 in loans that I had to take to go to college for the next 10 years, all the while, paying for people who have the same opportunity for those loans to go to college for free. Believe me, I want to make the world a better place, and help where I can, i contribute to numerous charities, volunteer, and donate to my alma mater so that people less fortunate than myself have an opportunity to get a good education.
I agree that Obama is hands down an improvement over the last 8 years. I chose hope people are not disappointed. Just because he promised change, it may not be the change that everyone is looking for.

Imagine this had happened long before you were born, someone in your same position wouldn't have agreed, but you wouldn't have today that $65,000 debt. Would you honestly think back and disagree on the decision past generations had made?
See the main reason (I believe) the image of the US has changed is that, a country known for it's growing individualism has decided to take a step back and give something in order to improve everyone's life. That's why some people don't understand why we are all so happy about it. It's not really about what Obama will do to the world but about knowing that the people in one of the most powerful countries on earth has finally thought not only about each one of them as individuals but about their fellow americans and the rest of the world.

Pay attention to what's being said in this forums, there's a lot of non-american arguing with americans about how good americans are... but it's actually the foreigners the ones defending them.... It's getting ridiculous!

Revenue, Redistribution.... don't they mean anything to you?
revenue: taxes raise money to spend on roads, schools and hospitals, and on more indirect government functions like market regulation or justice systems.
redistribution. Normally, this means transferring wealth from the richer sections of society to poorer sections. This function is widely accepted in most democracies,
The government's JOB is to achieve the entire population's well being. But the white house does not sell cookies, all the money a government makes comes from taxes. That have to go to places where money is needed. Now that money has to come from somewhere. You can borrow it from China, or you can "charge" the people who are making lot's of money from what the country itself gives them (call it land for potatoes or the laws that make jobs possible).
Since a president MUST make sure EVERYONE is ok, it would be terribly irresponsible and borderline retarded to let the ones that are growing just grow, and the ones that are suffering just keep suffering. Money has to come from some place, there is no other option (cause if you don't do anything about it, the entire society falls, it can't stand when there's an increasing section of the population falling into poverty or lacking education. Some will have a nice house with lots of commodities, but others will be poorer and poorer until they have no other choice than to break into those nice houses, and get what they need. Not because they're stupid people who don't want to work and like to take advantage of other's wealth, but because they have had NO EDUCATION and NO POSSIBILITIES, and they just don't know where the line between right and wrong stands anymore.
So yeah, if you ask me... The ones WHO CAN PAY, SHOULD PAY.
Loans are what took the US economy where it is right now. Everything most americans own is virtual. You don't have a Car and a nice house, you owe it. It is not yours, not till you pay everything, and when you're done paying it, you can no longer enjoy it.
What I (and many friends that also lived in the us) found unbelievably wrong about the US was that everyone we met (students) were gonna have to pay for their studies once they graduated. But while they're paying for that, they decide they want a nice new house and a car for their brand new family. So hey, let's borrow that. They ended up paying for three different debts... it's ridiculous, go around the world and ask people about how much sense does that make.
When your kids or grand kids don't need to do all that and have actual physical money in their bank accounts, you'll understand.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather give something today than know that my kids may end up homeless. Cause, go talk to those homeless people, some of them had a nice childhood...
