Its funny. I was reading a picture book to my son last night and it had the solar system in it!! I had never read that book to him before so had no idea it had the planets in it---it has all different kinds of topics. It had all nine planets laid out around the sun and I pointed to Pluto and sadly told him the truth. Then I thought about getting a black marker to X it out, so that he won't be confused one day when he learns how to read and stumbles across the expired solar system. *tear*
It's funny, but like I said before, this type of reclassification in science happens all the time, with species types, rock types, chemical types, etc. Astronomy is such a mainstream topic that when it is changed everyone takes notice. The scientists have an obligation to increasing knowledge and, given recent findings really had no choice.
But this really doesn't affect our daily lives. Pluto is still the same icy rock it's been for the last 4 billion years. For all intents and purposes, we can continue calling it a planet."Science has proof without certainty... Religion has certainty without proof"

Mookie: Love your sig. Since you have it in quotes--is there someone in particular that "coined" that?I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.0 -

I found that quote in a book in one of those little quote sections before a chapter, but I can't remember who it was attruibuted to. The book is at my house, but I'm away right now so I can't check it for you. Stephen Jay Gould is ringing a bell, but I'm probably way off..."Science has proof without certainty... I'm not reading all of this thread, so maybe this has been brought up but I heard on KET that if Pluto were where the earth is, it would grow a tail. I don't know what the fuck they were talking about but thats what my TV said to me.-Jeremy0

It's like the comets. So cold and made of ice, that when it gets close to the sun, the sun starts smelting the whole thing, and forces the vapour away from the sun, hence the tail.
Astrophysics is fun!

I was all intrigued until you had to and explain it. I was hoping it was alive. Pluto the underdog is on the rise people. He will grow tired of being last and cold. He will soon find his glory, grow a tail and attack earth in a fiery Armageddon! YEAH! See, isn't that better than, ice, er, vapor, detail, blah blah...lol.-Jeremy0 -
