There's so much irony in this statement. Have you read the bible? Jesus didn't care about making friends. He had a message and a job to do. He kicked over tables in the synagogue, he said flat out he would divide families. He was not there to make friends, anymore than a lifeguard is at the beach to make friends.

If he was sent to make friends he sure did a piss poor job of it. Got sold out by one of his best friends and crucified. His three best mates deserted him in his hour of need.

That's two in a row maybe I should change the way I view Christianity, I was under the impression that it was about love and peace and about forgiveness. I thought it was about tolerance and all that, I guess I was wrong.

Though I cast away my faith, part of that message is still very important in my life and that's "love thy neighbour" even if thy neighbour happens to be a sinner. Now if you are going to tell me this isn't true, fine then I will change my view of what I think a Christian is supposed to be.
I like that. I can't wait to read the responses.:)

If you don't know where love comes from, how can you love your neighbor?

I can love you, want the best for you and still think you're a jerk and not want to be your friend. I love my buddy's dog, but I don't count the dog as a friend.

Love does not mean you have no backbone and stand for nothing for fear of hurting the other's feelings.

God is love. Many different religious people believe in God.

All love comes from God; therefore, in order to truly love thy neighbor, one must know God.

This is not to say that atheists cannot love, but cannot show love to the level of one who recognizes that God is love. Once you know that God is love, you love others unceasingly and without reservation.

unless, of course, you believe jesus wanted (or needed) to be crucified, and set up the whole thing to become the martyr he wanted (or was supposed) to be.

love all others? or just a select few? so in order for a christian to be a christian they for example would have to love ummmm hitler? or ummm bin ladin? because I'm sure that if you ask 90% of the so called christians in america what they think of Usama, "love" won't come up. and of course if they can't show this great love, that kinda means that they don't truly know God, meaning that they truly have no love for him.

Again, I have to ask have you read the bible? And if you did were you old enough to comprehend what you were reading? When Jesus was knocking tables over was he trying to convert anyone?

Stop asking if I read the bible, yes. I read it when I was 12 (not completely), read it when I was 16 (NT) and often read in it now.

I just though it was weird you defended miller who do thinks a crusade would help Iraq if you don't believe in it, especially as a Christian.

I'm sorry if it looked like I was defending Miller. He has his views and they usually don't coincide with mine. I was only trying to point out that Jesus did not come to make friends.

i remember going to sunday school and singing the song "they will know we are christians by our love" and the song taken from 1st john 4:7-8 "love is of god, and everyone that loveth is born of god and knoweth god he that loveth not, knoweth not god for god is love"
what they forgot to mention is that their love is reserved only for big business, oil, and power. or so i can only assume by whom they have selected to represent them. truth is as we grow older and "exchange magic for fact.... no tradebacks" what we realise is "they will know we are christians by our self richousness, biggotry, hatred for human rights, hatred for privacy, hatred for the bill of rights, racism, hatred for the poor, hatred for the environment, hatred for eqaulity, and most of all love for war and war mongers" these are the traits of todays christian....you all made that clear when you chose this administration to represent your faith. you did that by handing out pamphlets in your churches telling people god wanted you to vote republican, by filling church busses to go down to the polls and vote republican, by all your church leaders going on television telling people to vote republican..... and by george bush getting his war orders from his conversations with jesus christ...... so i dont need to hear anything else about how i can only know real love if i know your god. but back to the point of the original post. the fact is my friends in iraq are more likely to be shot at because if this asshole making a statement validating that this is a religious war. too bad they cant shoot at him instead of my friends, but he is to chicken shit to go over there and fight for his "god' he justs sits in rotary clubs and helps al qeada recruit follers to fuel the war for his buddies in the oil industry and military industrial complex. how can anyone defend what this turd said????really???????

Well Miller is in favour of spreading the message of Jesus to the Iraqi people, hippiemom pointed out that Muslims already know about Jesus and have their own beliefs and Jesus' message would be as welcome as Mohammed's message to Christians. And with the current situation, that would not make a lot of friends. Miller said he didn't care about making friends and was in favour of this crusade which would stir up more hatred and more violence.

I said "Just like Jesus", I did it because I felt like he goes up against a lot of aspects of Christianity and I get flamed for it.

But don't get me wrong surferdude, I do appreciate your opinion and I'm glad there are Christians on this board (some of which never even post here) like you or cornnifer who, through their posts help me preserve the idea that Christianity is not a bad thing despite the many negative experiences I had with it.

Do you know what a good christian does?

He believes that Jesus Christ was the son of God and all salvation comes through Him.

Do you believe that? If you don't, then maybe you should not start giving advice about what a good christian is.
Yes that is what a Christian believes, but I don't know anyone who thinks that this alone makes one a good Christian. To be a truly good Christian, it seems to me that one should at least attempt to follow the two commandments that Jesus gave ... to love god, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Are we loving our neighbors when we blow their country to smithereens, killing hundreds of thousands of them and injuring hundreds of thousands more? That's a strange kind of love for people who claim to be followers of a man who never uttered so much as one word advocating violence, not even in self-defense.

And are we loving our neighbors when we disregard their deeply held beliefs, wanting to spread our message at point of gun? We didn't send missionaries over there to have a friendly discussion about faith, we sent tanks and missiles. We are in no position to be spreading this message of love to anyone, least of all the Iraqi people. Jesus didn't talk about violence, but he had plenty to say about hypocrites.

For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it."

All of you make many assumptions about Christianity. You seem to think of Christ as a hippy figure who would've worn birkenstocks and a peace t-shirt. If you actually read what he said, he is far more complex than that.

Though Christ is not literally encouraging violence in the passage, he predicts that violence will occur because of his teachings. There won't be peace because humans will disagree over whether Christ is the savior or not. Christ says that those who die for believing that he was the savior will save their souls. On the other hand, Islam teaches that those who kill for the faith can save their souls.

I do not support these wars and I never have. They are unjust and immoral and our troops do not belong in the middle east, but on our own borders. The arabs want nothing to do with us. Still, one cannot help but compare the christian world to the islamic world.

Where turmoil and violence pervade the middle east, even in areas that are only muslim (shiite vs. sunni), the western world remains largely peaceful.

That may be the most intelligent post you've ever posted.

You're wrong about Islam, though. It is only when Jihad is proclaimed that those who choose to kill in the name of Allah, and all that gobbletygook...

You're a piece of work, whore.
