and he was meeting with Bono yesterday ... Bono? Really? What, Bono told him he needed to be back in Wsahington? How come he doesn't feel the need to cancel the meeting with Bono yesterday to run back to Washington?

If it were that important, why wasn't McCain back in Washington LAST week?

That's my biggest beef. That's why I feel it's a political ploy, and not some grand gesture which puts country first.

And why was he just last week releasing political ads on the economy if he thought this crisis required rising above politics?

What changed between the last week and this week? His poll numbers have dropped and Palin's numbers among educated white voters have tanked (down 20%). The more those critical middle-of-the-road undecideds learn about her the more they don't like her = hide her (or at least don't let her speak ) and cancel the VP debate.

  • Can I ask a question?

I thought McCain's campaign made a big deal about suspending their ads as of 5 PM last night.

Well, I just saw one on tv. Did they decide to scrap this whole suspension thing without telling anyone? lol :)

was it a McCain ad ... or a 527 organization ad?

I think that McCain was referring to campaign appearances not radio, print or tv ads. Many of those ads have already been purchased so they will continue to run.

No, it was an "i'm john mccain and I approve this message".

I could have sworn I read that they were temporarily opting to not run ads. However, that could have been someone's editorial comment. I can't remember the source.

And Palin is campaigning today as well...

Maybe just a "partial" suspension? :)

It may have just been an editorial comment. Ad space, be it radio, tv or print is purchase in advance, so that ad may have been bought and paid for weeks ago.

  • This is what they told the Washington Post yesterday:

"NEW YORK -- McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt said the GOP presidential nominee had begun to take his television ads down unilaterally and said the Arizona senator is hoping that Sen. Barack Obama will do the same."

Republicans are trying to turn this into a conversation about whether or not John McCain should go back to DC during the crisis. Because that's the only angle from which they can view this as a positive move. But that's not even the issue! Of course he should go back to DC if he feels he needs to be involved in person. The real issue is:

    - Does he need to suspend his campaign in order to be focused on the economy in DC? No, he should be able to multi-task from DC and Palin should be able to shoulder most of the campaign responsibility for a few days.

    - Does he need to cancel a debate on Friday evening which even Republicans say shouldn't be all that difficult for him since it's in his "specialty", foreign policy? No, he could be in DC yesterday, today and tomorrow, sit in on all the meetings and learn enough about the economic proposal to cast his vote and and still fly down to the debate Friday evening. Supposedly, he doesn't need a lot of prep on the debate subject and he's probably completed most of the prep he does need.

    - So then why do it??

Simple. They needed to find a way to cancel the VP debate. They thought the easiest way to do that would be if the Presidential debate somehow needed to be rescheduled - they would suggest taking the VP time slot. When you walk around with a singular focus like that in your mind for several days in a row, you end up jumping at the first perceived opportunity to implement your plan. I don't think McCain was afraid of debating Obama on foreign policy, nor does he believe he's needed in DC Friday evening, he just didn't realize how terribly this lame attempt at rescheduling would be perceived.

Yup. I can't even believe that some here are defending McCain's decision to do this. I know if Obama had done the same, I would be very critical of him. It still wouldn't make me change my voting preference. But I would be critical. I even said as much before Obama held his press conference and didn't agree.

It's time for the GOP supporters here to tell it how it is. Don't agree with everything just because you feel you have to. Grow some balls. Admit something is lame when it's lame.
  • Yeah, because the debate is just a tv show with no greater consequence than the latest episode of Deal or No Deal.

actually, i beg to differ. i think many on the fence voters WAIT until the debates to decide how they're gonna vote.

I was wondering that too when I saw a brand new McCain commercial this morning. (Yes it was from the McCain campaign, not a 527.)

    if, somehow, they do delay Friday's debate, and a push is made to cancel the VP debate so we can still have the 3 presidential debates;

Can we then, once and for all, state that the McCain campaign is agreeing with everyone, democrats and republicans, that she is so incredibly unqualified to be a heartbeat away from running this country?

I know. And it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Which is certainly saying something. So, congratulations on that.

really...? or are you being a drama queen...? I say drama queen...

again, I see you ignore the fact mccain can't focus on two things at once...I happen to find that ridiculous...not the most ridiculous thing ever...

I suppose simple minds can't understand to much at once...
Nobody is threatening to CANCEL the debates outright. Just postpone them until next week.

If the potential meltdown of the entire U.S. economy isn't a reason for postponement, what is?

ohhh noooo....the sky is falling....mccain needs to swoop in and save the day...

the economy will be fine...basically this is just a correction in the "free market"....these assholes on wall street gambled and lost...they made poor choices, thus they should grab their boot straps and pull themselves up...

also, I hear these toxic assets may end up "making taxpayers money in a few years"...well, if that's the case, then the fools that own them, should keep them and be happy....

I don't get this rush to bail out these companies who made poor choices...let the f-n free market do it's magic...

I'll say it again, mccain looks like a scared pussy, unable to chew gum and walk at the same time...

Yup! Eighty-six percent of voters still want it held or held and focused on economy. And 83% of Republicans!

  • Hang on a second. The debate is on, right? McCain said he would debate if a deal is reached by Friday. I am reading a deal is imminent. Let's get ready to rumble.
