I think its very telling that he was willing to be amiable and friendly with someone like Flynt behind the scenes, whereas his public persona (or his product?), the persona that preached to the masses, was VERY, VERY different.

I believe its called Hypocrisy....or maybe Advertising.

Or maybe he was trying to talk with Larry and get him to change his ways and talking with him about the issues was what their relationship was based upon. But, as was talked about in the interview, Jerry didn't waver from his position...it's not like he was directing Hustler shoots before going to church on Sunday. Everyone, including those he disagreed with, knew exactly where he stood on the issues and knew he wasn't changing, but they also said he was a caring person. I've never met the guy and every time he opened his mouth it scared me, b/c i had to wonder what he was going to say that would irritate nearly everyone (including myself), but what is said on here about someone who just died is sad.

What a bunch of classless, ignorant jerks we have on this board. Taking any kind of pleasure from anyone's death is more than just pathetic - it puts you somewhere on the evolutionary scale below human.

He died a natural death. If my memory serves me correctly there were plenty of people of people on this board cheering the Execution of Sadaam. I'm against capital punishment, and I would have voiced my oposition to the execution of Jerry - numb nuts - fulwell.
Again, he died a natural death. Although in his lifetime he preached hatred and bile to segments of society which totaled millions.
Why the phony sympathy? I didn't hear you offering the same type of sympathy to Sadaam when peope around here cheered his hanging. I too thought Sadaam was an evil scum fuck, but I will never cheer an execution. Falwell died a natural death at a grand old age. Therefore no sympathy is warranted. He was a twisted hate monger. In my opinion his life should be ridiculed and his preachings should be resigned to the pages of comic books or porno magazines. Fuck him and all his kind!

oh yeah...it's the exact same alright

that's not only a highly overused cliche....but in this case....just pure shite... :D

I stayed quiet on the Sadaam death.

People in this thread are confusing a call for some respect for life with support for what Falwell stood for. I have yet to see one person who said that they supported all that Falwell preached.

This is possible too. Fair we'll call it a draw and i'll give the guy a little benefit of the doubt. I just got a little pissed off at some of the extreme high horse attitudes in this thread. There is some real fake big hearts around here. But it seems you have pacified* me again chopitdown. Please dont keep doing it.

it is not about killing or calling for the execution of Hatemonger Falwell. but the fact is that this world will eventually evolve to a more progressive place when all these hateful old men die off and a more reasonable generation takes its place. I am not calling for the execution of Bush or Cheney, but one day filthy old biggots and warmongers like them will die off, and we will live in a more progressive country. I do celebrate the death of Falwell, not because I wanted him killed, but because it brings us closer to a time when we are not influenced and ruled by his generation of insanity. It is like celebrating the fall of the berlin wall.... the death of a symbol of division, hatred and everything that is wrong with society. I am glad he is dead. it does bring me comfort and happiness that he is dead. he deserves NO respect, only ridicule and spite. he is a figure to be learned from, one day we will tell our grandchildren how far our country has progressed by looking back on the dark times of Falwell. sure, our grandchildren will mock us for living in such obscene times and giving this man any credit whatsoever, but at least he will serve as a marker of what we were. kinda like a really hideous before and after picture. celebrating his death is like the thin people on television commercials smiling and holding up the enormous pants they used to wear.

I love Jerry Falwell because he was a perfect example of what not to be; a hateful, discriminatory, and ignorant human being.

the truly sad thing is that he did not change his views or his teachings before he died, so he will now always be remembered as the hate filled man that he was. his legacy will always be one of discrimination and hate.

I definately disagreed with 98% of what the man said but I honestly think he believed he was doing good work for the world, he simply saw it differently than most of us. He was certainly not ignorant, I doubt hateful and everyone is discriminatory. Remember dissent is what's great about freedom and discussion. I never thought much of Falwells points of view, but I seriously doubt he was a bad guy. I think he and Larry Flynt actually becuame pretty good friends.

He was a fundamentalist yes, but he's not Fred Phelps.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

Falwell was a passionate showman. He had a message about the blood of Jesus. He was a primitive man of Sunday Christianity who spoke along the lines of bloodletting and death as the redemptive qualities of a "good" God. He was not unique. He was a simpleton when it comes showmanship as art, and art as income, yet he did provide, through his celebrity(and/or "art"), some goods and services to the less fortunate. I'm suspicious of some of those services as I've been through the gospel missions myself as a homeless person and those sorts of places can be ugly and quite crudely ...crude, and humiliating. Godless, really, to use the vernacular.

In any case, he had his say here, with us. And now he's gone.
    RIP, Jerry Falwell.

the KKK believes what it does is better for the world as well
    He was certainly not ignorant,
he stated 9/11 happened because Gid was punishing us for our sins, i think that is ignorant
    I doubt hateful
obviously you are not aware of his stances on gay rights, feminism, non-christians, etc
    and everyone is discriminatory.
that has nothing to do with his open discrimination against gays and non-christians
Remember dissent is what's great about freedom and discussion.
i support his right to have his poin tof view, that doesnt mean he wasnt wrong
I never thought much of Falwells points of view, but I seriously doubt he was a bad guy.
anyone that tells me i am going to hell because i am a non-believer is a bad person. anyone that preaches hate is a bad person

that doesnt excuse hi for his sins ;)
