Sleater-Kinny was the worst by far. I have nightmares b/c of her voice...

    Presidents of the United States.

That's not saying much for the other opening bands, but they were a lot better then I thought.

The Supersuckers are a fun band to watch also.

    Supergrass was alright
    Idlewild was palatable
    Sonic Youth was interesting

The bar is so low with PJ openers (murder city devils, anyone?) that these three probably clear it ...
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do

  • I wish I would have seen S-K open for PJ but they never opened any shows I went to. I'm gonna go with a dark horse here and say The Fastbacks.

Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...
  • SLEATER - KINNEY

    Fuck the haters.

Amen, I was fortunate enough to see them open three times.

Ben Harper and Sonic Youth are also tops on my list, but I've got a feeling KOL will be as good or better then them all.

Not sure if this count, but in Pittsburgh 2000, some members of Sonic Youth had an emergency to tend to, so the preset was Ed. He sang and played a small set, invited the remaining members of SY to jam as well.

What are the chances Ed will do a small preset on this current tour where he plays a few songs from ITW?

Same thing happened in D.C. (Columbia, MD actually) that year. Pretty cool, except that I missed the first couple of songs because I was tailgaiting :(

i was actually thinking this thread was about best opening songs........:p for that, still a tough call...but i'd say it's a toss-up between my very first pj show...uniondale with long road....and verona, with release

as to the ACTUAL thread question....hmmmmm. if it's just for pj shows, i am thinking nijmegen with KoL and incubus, perry from jane's addiction first started off, and...whatever...but the other 2 acts, i REALLY liked paired with pearl jam! :)

this august i am taking hubby as a surprise to see the police, with elvis costello as an opener.....think that will be fantastic! also, more of shared billing i think, but in 2000....STP and then the chili peppers, VERY good pairing!
    Stay with me...

Best opener ever...White Zombie in '94 (?)...either opened fro Aerosmith or Metallica back in the day. Opened with "Welcome to the Planet Mother^&$#@+"

So many faces painted white...had to love that "horror film groove metal"... :) Ahh back in the day.

For PJ probably...MMJ or DCFC...maybe Frank Black

Back in '86 or '87 Bonnie Raitt opening for Stevie Ray Vaughn in Spokane was pretty incredible

Pearl Jam opening for Tom Petty in '06. I don't care how they said it was a co-headlining gig...Pearl jam only played 90 minutes and TP played 2 hours.
Frank Black opening for PJ in '98 was also very sweet.

For Pearl Jam openers, Sonic Youth. Buzzcocks, Mudhoney and Ben Harper get hon. mentions.

Overall, probably Stevie Ray Vaughn opening for Robert Plant and The Clash opening for The Who in a dead heat. (Ironically next on the list may be Robert Plant, opening for The Who).
    This weekend we rock Portland
