Wow, i think that statement is just dead wrong. I think it was the other way around on Phish tour.
But everyone is entitled to there opinion.
So I'm totally wrong that Phish didn't take advantage over Jerry's passing? Deadheads were looking for something to grab onto after Jerry passed. Phish were in the right place at the right time?
So wrong...Phish sold out MSG and many other arenas before Jerry passed and most phish fans will tell you 93-95 were their best years. Phish fans like phish's music, and that's why they went to the shows. You didn't see Leftover Salmon or Blues Traveler blow up after Jerry past. People got to see good music, and music they like.
Using your logic, Pearl jam got huge and benifited becasue Kurt died, which is not not true, but the same logic.
Like the dead I'm sure the drugs helped some people like Phish's music?
I mean I really tried liking Phish but I didn;t see what the big deal was about them. It's just what I think so anyway.

to be honest...there weren't many 40+ year old deadheads at the phish shows in the mid to late 90's that I went to. It was a 20 something crowd in the 90's. Did some hard core travel around the country type deadheads gravitate toward Phish, sure but Phish would still be where they are today if Jerry was still around.

I was 20 in 1998 and nowhere near a Phish fan. Had Jerry been still alive I would have toured all over the place seeing them. But It was PJ that caught me.
I remember listening to ''A live one'' from Phish and trying so hard to like them. lol

No doubt their music is not for everyone but it did make a bunch of people happy. Good thing you found PJ!!!

There are too many bands that I've seen a handful of times to start listing. But there are only 2 bands that I've seen more that PJ.
Grateful Dead - 162
Jerry Garcia Band - 21
As for a comparison of the fanaticism following the band, there is none. After attending 162 shows... if you use, say, the high school grades as a metaphor, I considered myself a first or second semester sophomore.
Most dead heads I've met have been to 2-3 times as many shows as I have. When you entered a GD concert, there were literally thousands of people there that have attended over 300 shows, 500 shows, etc...
So when I start hearing of thousands of PJ fans that have seen more than 200 shows, I'll start wondering about a comparison. But that will never happen. It is going to take 5-7 years for PJ to even play 200 more shows.
I love PJ more than anything that exists today, but there is no comparison in regards to # of shows.
I also want to respectfully disagree with the idea that Phish took any advantage of the Jerry's passing.
I definitely think there was a certain percentage of GD fans that wound up seeing Phish A LOT more than they would have if Jerry didn't go. I think that statement is even more true for String Cheese Incident.... But I don't think the band(s) took ANY advantage of it AT ALL and actually made concious efforts to shed themselves of that image... And it was to my disliking, because these bands would make an extra effort to NOT play any Dead covers, which I would have loved to see!

OK, this is a PJ board so.....
How about PJ covering Throwing Stones!
now that would be awesome
how about a ridiculously heavy other one
jeff could own that intro
Im a million miles away from home and I cant find a telephone...

I don't know if "right place right time" is the way id put it
what im saying is most of the kids from dead tour I ever saw at phish shows almost NEVER went inside
they just sat in the parking lot doing their thing bleeding off the phish scene...
if anything jerrys passing hurt the phish scene overall
sure for a while in 95-96 they may have sold a FEW extra tix to deadheads looking for a fix but it was by no means the majority of the fanbase

I mean I really tried liking Phish but I didn;t see what the big deal was about them. It's just what I think so anyway.
No offence to you personally, but I've seen this "I tried to like" or "I tried to get into" (insert whatever band) so many times recently, and it is just one of the most confusing and or dumb statements I can think of.
Either you like an band or you don't, in all my years I can never recall trying to like or get into a band, I was either into them or I wasn't. Maybe it's because I always think for myself and like what I like because I like it, not because other people do.
I am a HUGE Deadhead, I saw 169 shows, but the one thing I NEVER did was try to force their music on other people like some Deadheads do. I never gave someone a tape of a show unless they asked me and never tried to tell someone the old, "you just don't get it" speach, some people like it some don't. It's kind of like the Jerry Garcia quote about Deadheads.
"Our audience (fans) are like people that like licorice, there are lots of people that don't really like licorice, but the people that like licorice REALLY REALLY like licorice."

I kinda think it's the same way with PJ.........
I know either you like the dead or didn't. Same with Phish also.
Let me also say this, there will NEVER be another Grateful Dead. As far as trying to compare the touring with Pearl Jam, Grateful Dead would Tour EVERY Spring, Summer, Fall and play shows in December as well, they were ALWAYS touring. The ticket distribution was way different with Grateful Dead, you would mail order your tickets and they would send them to you before the shows, so you wouldn't have to wait in line at the venue. They also made custom tickets for you that didn't look anything like ticket master.
Cob, would love to party with you and ramble about the gold ole days with the Grateful Dead! Your post brought back some memories!
Here's my list:
Grateful Dead - 70
George Clinton & P-Funk All Stars - 7
Neil Young - 5
Ryan Adams - 5
Ben Harper - 4
U2 - 4
And many others I've seen 2-3 times, but too lazy to remember.
Although this thread is for non-Pearl Jam shows, PJ would come in a distant 2nd on this list (been seeing them since '92), but they'd be first if they did tour like the Dead used to.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

I know this is a place for all things PJ, but I am curious as the band seems to have become the Dead of the new century in terms of touring and ticket distribution. Are there a lot of former Dead Heads now following the band, 90's Alt Lover's, or concert junkies?
My top two are
GD 54 X
Rush 10X
ive been going to concerts since 77, so ive seen a bunch (this is off the top of my head)-
The Who - 9x
The Stones- 9x
Springsteen - 7x
Ac/Dc - 5x (nothing after '80)
Rush - 5x
Bowie - 6x
Dead - 3x (78, 86, 93)
Roger Waters (5x), David Gilmour (1x) Pink Floyd (2x)
Led Zep - 1x (best show ever)
page/plant - 2x; Plant solo 2x
Radiohead 3x

Yes, I have seen the Dead but only once... but have seen WSP a whole whopping 2x... mind you- i have three children and no babysitter! LOL@ME!

I love to see that so many people are into The Phish and other jam bands. I have seen so many bands over the course of the last 25 years that it is hard to keep track.
Some of my numbers (easily less than a quarter of shows I have seen in my life.):
Phish - 45
moe - 44
PJ - 22
Tea Leaf Green - 9
U2 - 8
Umphrey's McGee - 7
Grateful Dead - 7
STP - 4
G'N'R - 3
Poison - 2
Tears for Fears - 1
