Do vocals completely ruin any bands for you?

Some bands might be cool if it wasnt for the awful vocals, I cant give these bands much of a chance because of the vocals

Rush
Tool
Stone Roses
Arcade Fire
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Police
Janis Joplin
Alpine Valley 2000
Summerfest 2006

  • I don't agree with Arcade Fire or the Police (Sting's voice is amazing), but...

Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan has got such an annoying whiny drone... sounds like a banshee.

Jack Johnson.... sounds like he's falling asleep in every song. Stop whispering! Put your back into it!

  • I bet Rush is the most common reply on this one. Let's see:

    Rush
Nickleback - but its more than his hideous voice, the lyrics and melody are usually suck too
    Blink 182/ Angels and Airwaves
Sugarland - and they are a vocal band, so I guess they're out all together

I know I'm always saying, "I just don't like the voice", but thats all I can think of at the moment."

HAAAAAAA!:D YEP. Without a doubt the first/main band that comes to mind for me! Don't even get me started. :p
Smashing Pumpkins is definitely the other.

I gotta add Janes Addiction as well. Eeek! I know they are worshiped by many, but I just cannot hang with the vocals.

I've always enjoyed the music of these bands though and definitely can appreciate them. Sadly that just aint enough.
Vocals really seem to make or break it for me...

The thing about Jack Johnson is that not only are his vocals bad but his music is boring as hell and I cant stand the lyrics either.

Ah, Janes Addiction is a good one that I forgot about, could have really liked the music if it wasnt for those screeching vocals, especially on Jane Says.....that song makes me cringe

I pretty much cant stand any band with vocals like the singer of Nickelback. But yeah, you are right.......everything about their music is awful.

  • Radiohead
  • Mars Volta

    Silversun Pickups

I like both these bands and I believe the singers are great...but I originally thought "female" lead vocalist but later found out it was "male" lead vocalist so I found it hard to adjust after finding out.

  • I actually like Geddy's voice!

The Smiths. They were a decent band, but God I hate Morriseys voice with a passion. Always seemed like a total twat from interviews and such too. I'm getting angry just thinking about him

Yeah, Morrissey is a fucking homo prick. Cant stand his opera like vocals, his miserable attitude, and his terrible music.

They were the first band that came to mind. Billy Corgan's voice is one of the most annoying in rock. The Mars Volta's singer is tough to get used to. So many heavy metal bands would be better sans the excessive screaming and The Muggs might still be in the Next Great American Band competition if they were a four-piece as opposed to a three-piece.

why does your reason for hating him always have to be a homophobic thing? can't you just hate his music? jeez, I thought it was the 21st century...

anyway, I love Maynard's vocals but I do get why you and others wouldn't like Tool because of them. Kind of an acquired taste.

I will agree with Jane's... Never liked Farrell's voice but still like the band. Three Days is a masterpiece and even his voice is tolerable on that.

The Black Crowes. I know I'm in the minority but I can't stand his voice, it just grates on me. I also agree with the Police. I always thought I didn't like them much just because they were so overplayed, but in retrospect I really don't care much for Sting's voice. I'll also throw in MMJ and yes I know I'm in the minority yet again! :)

im pretty sure he's from indiana, which would explain a lot. both the hatred of "townie" bands like buckcherry (self-loathing) and the hatred of anything remotely "homo" (cannot escape his prejudices).

for me, i can't stand anyone in the vein of blink-182 or nickelback vocal-wise. the high whiny punk-pop vocals or the deep faux-dramatic hard rock voice. i also can't stand country twang. it's why i can only handle the drive-by truckers in small doses and don't like kid rock's last album.

I dislike Buckcherry intensely but I appreciate your sentiment :) I just like my cock-led rock music to be more original, like The Jesus Lizard (almost literally, singer used his testicles as a percussion instrument :D)

    Rush
    Placebo
    Death Cab For Cutie
    Decemberists

I can't stand their nasal sounding voices. Placebo and Decemberists actually have a couple of okay songs though.
  • Morrisey for sure, way too whiny.

    The guy from Muse.

    Win Butler
    NERDS!
  • Led Zeppelin

that guy is real nasal...real annoying vocalist;)
