    My favorite band.

I've been listening to them since '89 or '90. I never grow tired of them. The songs never get old. In fact, I am still discovering new things in their music as every year passes. "Break on Through" still charges me up the same way it did when I first heard it. I think that says a lot about them as a band.

To me they are all-encompassing. You can simply groove and rock out to their music, drink beer and party to it, chill out to it, put on head phones and go on a journey to it, get high to it, or make love to it. The Doors can sound like music to a ritual or initiation, or simply just sound funky. It can be very spiritual, mellow, and beautiful and/or nasty, bluesy, and vulgar--sometimes all in the same song. It is sacred music to me.

The Doors did not allow themselves to be boxed in by lables or borders. They strived to be different. They are "world music" in the true sense of the word. Timeless and universal. But they are also so very, very California. Which is something I can appreciate, because that's where I'm from.

    Alright, I've geeked out enough.

  • Love the Doors. They did so much in such a short time...1967 to '71...
Everytime I'm around Venice I imagine Jim hangin around the area writing songs like Hello, I love You.
  • I read No One Gets Out Of Here Alive in the 6th grade and did a report on it. I love thd Doors. Like Sathogwa says they were definitely all-encompassing. They pushed limits in every way they could. Besides that songs like The End and Peace Frog just fucking rule.

HELL YEAH!!!! The Doors RULE. There is NO WAY I can deny this band. Never get sick of them either. Classic! Definitley one of my fav bands of all time. Love love love LOVE them as well. Ray Manzarek is the frickin MAN! They really did do SO much in short amount of time and left a huge imprint on the musical world. Legendary without a doubt!

Beautifully said and I could not agree more!

Little fun fact ~ Jim Morrison went to my high school and lived in my town briefly. Something I'm of course proud of. hehe. There's a bench in a park here here in Alameda dedicated to him. :)

    One of my favs....

    SOUL KITCHEN

Well, the clock says it’s time to close now
I guess I’d better go now
I’d really like to stay here all night
The cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes
Street lights share their hollow glow
Your brain seems bruised with numb surprise
    Still one place to go
    Still one place to go
Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I’ll wander baby
    Stumblin’ in the neon groves
Well, your fingers weave quick minarets
    Speak in secret alphabets
    I light another cigarette
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I’ll wander baby
    Stumblin’ in the neon groves
Well the clock says it’s time to close now
I know I have to go now
I really want to stay here
All night, all night, all night

Isn't it libragirl!!? We agree on yet another kick ass song. :D;) And I hear ya, I grew up with this band as well. They will forever hold a special place in my heart and I really will NEVER tire of them.

YES it's true Sathogwa! Isn't that awesome? :D You should totally visit it. My old P.E. teacher use to actually be Jim's too. He use to cut hair and do tats on the side...he cut Jim's hair. He continued to cut hair years down the line with the SAME scissors that cut the mighty man's hair. He also use to tell us stories about him. Pretty fuckin cool. Glad you appreciate the greatness of SOUL KITCHEN as well. Such a rockin song!!! :D

Here's another fav.... no matter HOW many times I hear it... it never fails to take me away. :o

    *CRYSTAL SHIP*

    Before you slip into unconsciousness
I’d like to have another kiss
    Another flashing chance at bliss
    Another kiss, another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We’ll meet again, we’ll meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
    Deliver me from reasons why
You’d rather cry, I’d rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, I’ll drop a line

    *sigh*

    :o

HAIL HAIL the almighty, legedary DOORS! In a classic league all their own. They can't be compared to anything else. Music that will forever ROCK our lives ! :D

Hey that's a good story! I have one too. I work with an "old" (ha ha) '60's guy in my office. He was at a poetry reading in the late 60's here in Sacramento. The featured reader was the poet Michael McClure, a good friend of Morrison. Any way, who should show up that night along for the ride with McClure but the Lizard King himself, three sheets to the wind I might add. I guess there was only about 20 people at the reading and each of them recieved a handbound copy of "The Lords and the New Creatures" BEFORE it was even published from the hand of Jim Morrison himself. I guess my coworker was flipping through his copy and Jim looked at him and went: "What, man? Don't you like it?"

I guess every one wanted him to read that night, but he was too drunk.

Yeah, I'd have to put them second after PJ! Love them. Like others, I never get tired of them. My husband actually saw them live twice - I'm so jealous. :) Also, Eddie is the only one I can imagine filling in for Jim. He did an awesome job.

One of the most unique bands of all time. Each album was amazing and they never dissapointed. Robby Krieger is an awesome guitarist and doesn't get enough credit IMO. I actually saw them with Ian Astbury on vocals. They can still kick a lot of ass. I reccomend that anyone who likes the doors should go out and see them.

  • I really like the records too, I've got them all plus vhs and stuff but I really find Ray Manzarek the keyboard player isn't good at all and ruins most of the songs (not completely), he's kind of annoying.

  • As much as I love this band and as high as I would rank them on my list, I've yet to get any of their albums!! I know, I'll probably be shot for that, but it's hard getting money for other bands when you don't have a job and you buy so much Pearl Jam stuff!! But I have seen the movie with Val Kilmer and I've heard a good amount of their music to make a judgement about them, and they're def. one of the best bands ever!!!
