This situation is making some news now. I heard on my way home on NPR...Did Coldplay Plagiarize Guitarist Joe Satriani?

haha, i just heard this same piece. That was about 30 seconds after i changed from the KROQ story on it. A lot of interest here.

Come on you guys... it's nothing like it. That's like saying... well, like 'Ice Ice Baby' sounds like 'Under Pressure'.

If I could, think I would give in.
  • As a guitarist i think i'm supposed to wank Joe satriani off but i just can't bring myself to do it, what i have heard of his is just so boring, right up there with the fucking shadows!
Well done coldplay for ripping it off and making it 10 % more palatable!

  • Once the story is told, it becomes old.

I agree the Satriani man is boring and seemingly jealous of Coldplay's success.

  • Although I feel I may be wasting my time and I don't entirely agree with what Satch is doing, everyone here is giving him so much grief that he just doesn't deserve. The man knows an insane amount of musical theory, has moved with the times and writes some of the most heartfelt songs I've ever heard, 'singing' with his guitar. He's also an incredibly nice guy. There's so much criticism from people who I'd wager haven't heard much by him aside from a couple of tracks from Surfing With The Alien, an album that is 20 years old. He's nowhere near as technical a player as Vai and Malmsteen because he prefers playing with melody over playing fast. The vast majority of you have no clue.

Apologies for the essay but Joe's music holds a very special place in my heart.

    Per Billboard:

    Coldplays response
"Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song 'Viva La Vida.' We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavors."

haha. what a bunch of c*cks
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
  • Wow, that's extremely prickish... that will only fuel Satriani even more.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • Everyone here seems to be forgetting that chances are it's not Satch suing Coldplay AT ALL. It's his record company! Remember when The Verve got royally screwed with "Bitersweet Symphony" because of the Rolling Stones orcgestral sample? That was The Stones' record company. If I remember correctly, The Stones even said they LIKED the song. The record companies approach songs just like any other piece of 'property'. Mine mine mine, and you can't have any part of it...
