  • I think people need to keep in mind that the British are far less likely to have any idea who Joe Satriani even is. I don't think I've even heard him ever mentioned here in the five and a half years I've been here.

I just hate Coldplay because they represent everything that is wrong with rock music today.

    I thought that was Nickelback?

Breaking News: half-castrated goat to sue Chris Martin for vocal plagiarism.

holy shit dude, you always crack me up.

never been a big coldplay plan (tho i liked some of their first album). but i've always found this damn song extremely catchy and find myself humming it a lot. maybe they did steal the melody from Satch (who rocks) but it's just as easy to assume christ martin (or whoever wrote it) came up with it on his own. a lot of songs have similar melodies - part of Given to Fly sounds like part of Going to California - so I don't see what the big deal is.

actually, I do see what the big deal is. ultimately, this will drive up sales for both artists.

Sorry, but that crown belongs to Nickelback. Oh, already been mentioned. Didn't see that.

    Along with:

    Three Doors Down
    Seether
    Finger Eleven
    Shinedown
    Disturbed

What's wrong with Franz Ferdinand and The Killers? Yeah, they're not the greatest bands ever, but I'm not so sure they're part of the downfall of modern music.

    What's wrong with Seether?????????
  • I'd be pissed too. Joe Satriani is probably one of the greatest technical guitar players EVER. He's dedicated his ENTIRE life to his instrument. Learning it backwards, forwards. sideways, and upside down. Practices HOURS a day, EVERY day, just to have some generic crap-rock band that happened to be in the right place at the right time, blew up overnight, became the biggest band in the freakin world on plain old luck, and then rip off one of his original compositions. I say sue the pants off those assholes. Maybe he can get his hands on some of that Paltrow dough...

If you have to ask, you'll never know.
  • They do sound similar, but is it really necessary to go to court over it? I mean, I don't think I'd flip shit over it, just probably say something to Coldplay about it, see if I influenced that or not... it is possible to come out with the same melody/chord progression, especially in today's music..
If I could, think I would give in.
  • And why is Satch just bringing this up NOW??? The album came out 6 months ago, and the song was all over iPod commercials, radio, tv, etc. during that time MUCH more than now.

It really took him this long to notice the similarity?
  • At this point I would like to mention "Little Wing", "Yellow Ledbetter" and "While We Cry".

He was too busy creating extremely original guitar tracks...

  • Definitely sounds similar, but I wouldn't bother with a lawsuit over it. Music is going to sound the same in some instances, and you just have to shrug it off. We'll just say that Coldplay was "inspired" by JS. I really don't like Coldplay though. O well.

Interesting however If I was in his class the only thing that would keep me up was the playing of Satriani.

Well, since he's suing based off this, we can also assume he's a total fucking moron too.

lol. This is where you see whether or not people have a clue.
  • Everyone who is dissing Satch clearly hasn't heard anything he has released recently. The man has moved with the times (although I must say that If I Could Fly is one of my least favourite songs of his). This is probably my favourite Satch song from his 2006 release "Super Colossal":

Some of the most emotional guitar playing I've ever heard (aside from the teeth bit ;) )

As for the case, I think Joe should have left it to be honest. They're awfully similar but they're also pretty crap songs.

ok let's get one thing straight...whether you like joe satriani or not..whether it's a cheesy song or if you're a coldplay fan, the songs have the exact same melody and chord progression. George Harrison had to pay out $500,000 for my sweet lord sounding to similar to another song. The ruling wasn't based on if Harrison knowingly stole it. It doesn't matter if it's intentional or not, if it sounds too similar then it's a closed case and this one seems like it to me.

...on a sidenote I don't own any Satriani except for a G3 dvd (yes i am a guitar player) and for people to say he's crap based on one cheesy song is crazy. You guys have to understand how a guy who's been playing guitar for 25+ years and knows music theory front and back isn't going to sue some band based on bullshit. He knows how music works and having a band make millions off a song he wrote can't sit well.

  • I don't think they would steal the melody. I mean, In 2005's 'Talk' by them, they wrote Kraftwork to get permission to use part of their melody in it. This year, the intro to 'Life In Technicolor' (the instrumental, not the actual song), they used a song called 'Light Through The Veins', and they obviously wrote the guy to get permission to use it. If they did that, I don't see them stealing this from Joe. It is similar, but I don't think it was purposely done. I mean, would Eno let that happen? I very much doubt it. or the record company for that matter.
  • I don't get it... I know the probability of them coming up with the same chord progression and melody is really out there, since there are so many chords then combining that with melodies and tempo makes the probability pretty low of them coming up with the same thing, but if these bands start "owning" these chords + melodies, eventually, the same thing will be played again and/or you won't be able to play any music... so I don't understand how a band can own chords and melody; this just doesn't make sense to me. It's fucking music.. just share, who gives a fuck!
If I could, think I would give in.

If you wrote a song that someone used without your permission to make millions of dollars how would you feel? If its plagiarism to copy someones written work then its the same for music as well.

And i dont buy the argument that sooner or later all music will have been created . . . have some creativity and originality. Those who really want to will always be able to create their own original music.

I agree on almost all counts, BUT, I have to speak up and defend Franz Ferdinand! Very raw, tight grooves, very catchy and terrific live! Two of the other bands are pop punk for suburban teens and the other is an overrated "style over substance" pop band that got big riding Franz Ferdinand's wave (kinda like an STP to FF's Pearl Jam if you will).

I actually put myself in this position before I had written what I said, and to be honest, I didn't really feel anything... maybe it's because it really hasn't actually happened to me, or maybe it's just the person I am... I just didn't really care, whatev, life goes on.

I agree with that last bit.. but what I'm saying about all music will be created is, mathematically, it's not infinite... I'm not saying it'll happen in the next 10 years, but just saying, there will be (if we survive long enough) a time where technically, all music will be owned by some band or another.

Also, it really is possible to come up with the same thing... there's sort of a logical flow to music, so it's not impossible to come up with the same chord prog + melody, the probability is way low, yes, but not improbable... but with things like Calculus... Newton was working on his own form of Calculus, but there was also Leibniz who was working on something like Calculus as well... so how can two men think of the same mathematical concepts used in Calculus, while not stealing the idea from the other?

This situation is making some news now. I heard on my way home on NPR...Did Coldplay Plagiarize Guitarist Joe Satriani?
December 8, 2008 - If you were near a radio or in a bar this past summer, you might have found it impossible to avoid the string-saturated "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay.

Guitarist Joe Satriani heard the song, too, and it made him think about a song he wrote and performed in 2004: an instrumental called "If I Could Fly." When Satriani tried to contact Coldplay and didn't hear back after several months, he filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit against the band last week.

To add fuel to Satriani's fire, Coldplay's CD Viva La Vida is a number-one-selling album in 36 countries and a Grammy Award nominee, while Satriani's song never made it big.

This certainly isn't the first time two songs have sounded the same. The Chiffons waged a lengthy legal battle against The Beatles' George Harrison over the similarities between "My Sweet Lord" and The Chiffons' "He's So Fine." Harrison eventually admitted to "subconsciously copying" the song, and paid the band royalties.

Timothy English, author of Sounds Like Teen Spirit, says the two songs are similar, but work in different genres — Satriani's a rock instrumental and Coldplay's a more mainstream pop song. He says this occurrence isn't all that rare.
