  • I can hear it, but only slightly, to be honest. I think he'd have a really tough case on this.

I retract my earlier comment. On hearing this I think Joe's case is watertight.

Works well together. Perhaps Coldplay will hire Joe or vise versa.

Both sound pretty crap to me. JS must be nuts to bring that song to the public's attention.
  • Eh. They're similar, but one melody in a song doesn't make it a copy. If that was the case, Oasis would've sued Green Day for copying "Wonderwall" on that "I Walk Alone" song (I have no idea what the title of the song is).

I'd be more tempted to say that Coldplay stole it if I thought that anyone actually listens to Joe Satriani.

For the record, I don't like Coldplay, either.

I think Satriani has a very strong case after listening to both songs.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

I"m thinking the Coldplay guys don't listen to too much Satch. On top of that, they clearly know how to write a number one single much better than him.

They are identical but it's gotta be a coincidence.

I look forward to watching this play out though. HAHA

  • Yeah, I'm bound to be biased as a Coldplay fan (shoot me), but I bet they don't sit around listening to Satriani records......I mean, does anybody?

But yeah, as a musician myself there's been countless times jamming with friends where one of us has written something or come up with a riff and someone else has pointed it out as already existing.....

Joe Satriani has one of the best selling instrumental albums of all time. It's highly possible that someone in the band is a big Satch fan.

I just can't imagine the London posh boys from Coldplay listening to Satriani :D

If you're a guitarist of any level you've heard or listened to some playing by Joe Satriani. My daughter listens him and even tries to play some of his songs.

True. I'm a guitarist myself, and yes I've heard of Satriani, one of my closest friends is still a huge fan, but if I'm honest, and this is the point I was trying to make, I couldn't name you any of his songs if a gun was put to my head as his style of playing holds no interest to me whatsoever.....Alot of that face pulling/over earnest/100 minute solos style isn't overly popular with Indie guitarists hence why I think it's easily possible for Coldplay to have written Viva La Vida without ever hearing Satriani.....

My ex loves them and gave me a copy of one their albums the cover is all white. I listened to it once or twice and I was done with them. I guess what you're saying is possible, I do find it odd they didn't try to disguise or change something in the riffs.

We shall see how this plays out though.

    Pfft, Joe Shitriani.

so many songs are copies of others' melodies & there's no deal about it, why be a dick and sue?

worst example can currently think of is that Tom Petty song that Dani California sounded exactly like. That one genuinely sounded like it was copied, even the vocal patterns were similar!

coming from the coldplay fan

satch fuckin rocks... and im usually standing listening to him... at his concerts... or air guitaring in my room :D

this is one case i hope he wins (though im usually with everyone else whos saying its a punkass move to sue)

if you wrote a song and some pop band copied the chord progression and was making millions off it

I would guess that you would also sue

artists are very protective of their work
its one thing to be inspired by some one else's work, its another to copy it.

and while Im not fan of satriani's music, he is generally regarded as one of the greats and the dude can certainly shred

Different people just like different things....

Satriani may well 'fuckin' rock' but he bores the pants of me, I just can't listen to guitar solo after guitar solo......

But I also understand that Coldplay isn't for everybody either.....

I just don't think they ripped him off.....

Joe Satriani is not mainstream - his goal is not to make number one singles so to say that lacks an understanding of Satch as a musician.

Also, for those that say nobody listens to Satriani is igorant as well - anyone who is serious about playing the guitar has heard of Satriani, as he is one of the greatest guitarists alive. He has forgotten more about the instrument that Coldplay will ever hope to know.

I think the video speaks for itself. Its not just the same riff, its the same melody, progression - much more than just a coincidence.
