There's some serious wishdul thinking involved on Satch's part that anyone besides 16 year-old bedroom shredders give a shit enough to have listened to any of his post 90s stuff, never mind Coldplay. I mean come on...
Either way, they are both sterile and boring as hell. It's no wonder their tunes have converged at some point.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
Don't see it structure-wise. Notes are similiar, but it's not as if Satriani has a second guitar going in the back which is doing the same thing as the strings. It gets into melody theft when it's just common melodic notes.
It's also presumptious that Coldplay MUST have heard this song. It's not as if it's like a "Dani California" thing here, where the Chili Peppers were extremely lazy, at best.
If you're a guitarist of any level you've heard or listened to some playing by Joe Satriani. My daughter listens him and even tries to play some of his songs.
Granted the guy has done a lot for the instrument and "shredders" everywhere. Boy are his hands fast
I personally find his music bland, cheesy and very very dated. Same goes for his signature series Ibanez (complete with the handle:) )
Though his best selling record was released in 92 or something his tunes still sound very much a product of the 80's
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

You're thinking of Vai.

Yeah, I'm bound to be biased as a Coldplay fan (shoot me), but I bet they don't sit around listening to Satriani records......I mean, does anybody?
But yeah, as a musician myself there's been countless times jamming with friends where one of us has written something or come up with a riff and someone else has pointed it out as already existing.....

I think Vai is more of a twat but has marginally better music and is a better instrumentalist.
They are two sides of the same ugly coin but one of the sides is a little rustier than the other.

Joe Satriani is not mainstream - his goal is not to make number one singles so to say that lacks an understanding of Satch as a musician.
Also, for those that say nobody listens to Satriani is igorant as well - anyone who is serious about playing the guitar has heard of Satriani, as he is one of the greatest guitarists alive. He has forgotten more about the instrument that Coldplay will ever hope to know.
I think the video speaks for itself. Its not just the same riff, its the same melody, progression - much more than just a coincidence.
Shredding/wanking does not = songwriting. No one other than guitar nerds give a crap about "Sack".
I'm not a huge fan of Coldplay either but no chance those guys sit around listening to a wank guitar, only to rip it off.

Being that Satriani still tours year in year out, playing to 3,000 people a night, I think he probably has a very good idea who listens to his stuff. Absent from that 3,000 figure are 16 year olds. These same people are not there to hear to Surfing with the Alien in its entirely either.
Satriani and Vai same basic dude? I am enjoying this thread also

Well....minus the hair and the guitar handle and all

Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

Satriani does not just shred - saying so shows you do not listen to his music at all. Actually, most of his 4-6 minute songs only have about 45 seconds of what would be considered the typical "shred solo" - the rest is all about structure and melody. Just because someone does not put lyrics into their music does not mean they arent considered songwriters.

Yeah, the similarity is definitely there. Not sure if it is enough to really make a case, but there's definitely something to it. I can't stand Coldplay and even as a guitarist I was never all that turned on by Satriani, so I don't really have a horse in this race. But to say that Satriani is a hack or that no one ever listens/listened to his music is pretty out of touch--especially if we're talking about seasoned musicians.
To echo a common sentiment in this thread, some of the comments here are pretty entertaining.

cant argue with that! but like someone was saying... petrucci is who i think of with "shredding"... just INSANE speed... satch is definitely more compositional... love em both!

People who don't know the name would still probably recognize "Always with you , always with me", "Summer Song" and possibly "Starry Night".
Edit: Although when I show people AWM, AWY I tend to hear "is that the song from Top Gun"?
yeah, but you don't record and release said riff.
oh yeah, that's right
same basic dude
