It would've been funny it wasn't so completely inaccurate. Has Sean Penn been living in a cave the past twenty years as far as The Who is concerned? I couldn't really care less if they've sold their songs to a batch of tv shows or commercials but let's not turn around & claim that they haven't "sold out" but that Vh-1/MTV are the bad guys.
In one of the Rainn Wilson online interviews with Mike & Matt, he suggests they should do a CSI medley. Made me laugh.

They only did 2 songs. They should both on the broadcast. Your right The Who sounded rough. I think they need to take it down a notch. Maybe take a lesson from Neil Young and evolve a little more. Right now they're trying to reproduce themselves from 40 years ago and it's just not possible. Kind of makes me glad Zeppelin never tried a reunion. They're still great in a vintage kind of way though. It's like when you go to Fenway Park. You know it's way past it's time but it's still worth every penny.
Not to be a downer, but there will come a time people say the same things about Ed's voice (that American Spirit habit is going to catch up with him) and Pearl Jam too.

i don't wan't to call you clueless but but c'mon roger has no voice left at all go back and watch it again .....my2c ...
I wouldnt say no voice, but definitely straining to hit some of the screams and high notes probably 70% of what it was
but
the Foos stole that show.
young mans blues and bargain with gaz from supergrass was fucking brilliant
incubus was better than I thought
the flaiming lips have no business on that stage, coyne cannot sing
and the "tea with me" at the end was brilliant
I am absolutely still going to see the who in Oct.

dude, it was funny even though the Who has sold out
I don't want to be a PJ homer. And I do like the Who.
But the Who's performance tonight falls under the heading of "cute" ... as in "Look at grandpa hitting on that 21-year-old girl. It's so cute."
The Who in their prime were a fucking beast (or so I'm told). The version of the Who tonight got blown off the fucking stage. They just can't keep up, mostly because Daltrey aint what he used to be. I mean, he's old. It happens to the best of us.
They should have let Ed sing Baba, so he could show Roger how it's supposed to be done.
All very true. Pete is still Pete but Roger isn't anything close to the old Roger. I'd like to see Ed and Pete do a small tour. Throw Dave Grohl on the drums and Flea on Bass. Something like that would be amazing. I know Pete and Roger are like brothers but Roger is holding Pete back at this point.
dude, it was funny even though the Who has sold out
Nah, I didn't think so. I love Sean Penn as an actor but if I don't have to hear little Debbie Downer ever speak in public again I'll be happy. His act is so tired.
I just really have one comment. Eddie never needs (needed) a human-sized "Hamster Ball." He just trusted all of the Pearl Jam fans in their audience.... when he just layed back and let everyone catch him! I hate gimmicks. I'm just saying.

I totally agree with you on Penn. But I guess my hatred of MTV/VH1 supercedes my low opinion of Sean Penn's lame "persona."
I vividly remember being in my 6th grade classroom, watching the minutes tick off the clock, waiting to go home and be able see the Black Hole Sun and Sabotage videos on MTV. I just couldn't wait. I pity today's kids who go home to today's MTV/VH1 programming. The sad thing is that they don't know anything else. They think that's what MTV is supposed to be. They've never seen 120 minutes. They've never seen Idalis the VJ shaking her little ass in the camera. They've never seen a stoned-off-their-ass Nirvana interview. I feel sorry for them.
I was fucking blown away by Pearl Jam. Seeing Love Reign O'er Me has become one of my favorite songs to see live...it's so unbelievably powerful! After watching PJ do The Real Me, I've been watching it repeatedly all day on my DVR. Jeff was absolutely insane, Mike was moving around like a madman, and Stone was looking like John Lennon shaking his head around in the early days. Eddie was just simply amazing, as always.
PJ needs to do "The Real Me" much more often. I'm sure all of you agree 100%
The MuchMoreMusic broadcast in Canada was awful. Incubus surprised me. Pearl Jam didn't, and I hope "The Real Me" makes its way into the rotation (which seems likely). The Who is the greatest band in the world; can't wait for October 22!

Yah I loved MTV growing up. I was more of an 80s child but I was in high school when all PJ & all the others blew up. What a great time for music, what an exciting time for MTV. It's really mind boggling what's happened to it. I think the most annoying part is they seem to get a kick out of it. It's like they think that the fact that they no longer play music is funny or something. I never had a whole lot of love for Vh1 to begin with. If anything I think aspects of it have actually improved. When it first started it was REALLY bad. It was more for an older demographic & gravitated towards adult contemporary music. At least now they do cool things like honoring The Who. I also remember the first time we got MTV. All the kids in the house fought over the remote. We wanted to be the first ones to turn it to MTV. The first video we saw when we turned it there? "If This Is It" by Huey Lewis & the News. So you know...it wasn't all golden

Yeah, it's sad seeing him like this but Pete still has it. I would love to see a show featuring Ed and Pete.
Also, watching this last night is inspiring to me to buy tix tomorrow to see the Who again in October.
