Yeah, that is about all I have gotten into so far. Someone on here recommended me Explosions and picked up the album "the earth is not a cold dead place" or something like that and it is amazing. Beatiful music.

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet- their claim to fame was that they did the theme song from Kids in the Hall, but they also released three terrific albums, "Savvy Show Stoppers", "Dim the Lights, Chill the Ham" and "Sport Fishin"

Huevos Rancheros- surf-rock instrumental band from Calgary. Saw them live a bunch of times back in the early 90s. Great band! They released a few albums on Mint Records, and then disappeared.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

HAHAHA, wtf... that's an awesome name, haha.

  • Pelican
  • Has anyone on here listened to Russian Circles? If not go check out their song "Carpe".

    Myspace probably.

  • I like Russian Circles....a friend burned some of their music for me! I was actually going to go to their CD Release party but I couldn't make it!

    Mogwai

    Godspeed You! Black Emperor
    Sigur Ros
    Brian Eno
    Aphex Twin
    The Black Mages
"Death ain't the same without you, dear"
  • Man... or Astroman?

    They were mostly instrumental, anyway.

One of my personal favorite show memories was seeing them in New Orleans, before they came out they played a video they made of Star Wars, using the children's book/record set for the audio, and using action figures as the actors.

Another (mostly) instrumental band I like is Ring, Cicada. Check them out at http://www.ringcicadarocks.com.

Most of the other inst. bands I can think of have already been mentioned. That new Tortoise box set is pretty nice.
Statistically speaking, you're more likely to be pitied by Mr. T than you are to have feet.
  • Liquid Tension Experiment
  • wow that sounds like a great name for a band, I'm going to have to check em out just for creative uses of those words! P)

Mahavishnu orchestra. Literally a group of the best instrumentalists on their respective instruments at the time. The first incarnation that is.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • word to that, I have a MO album - i really dig it. They are kinda "old skool" tho :)

yeah I guess but I don't think they've ever been surpassed instrumentally speaking.

I dont really listen to instrumetal bands, but one of my favourite instrumental albums is Zooma by John Paul Jones from Led Zep. What a fantastic musician that man is

  • I can't believe no one mentioned Soulive.
I need a fix 'cause I'm going down
  • Most peeps on here probably haven't heard of Soulive. I dig some of the stuff they play of theirs on Sirius, but for the most part, they don't do too much for ME PERSONALLY - I get a little bored w/ their stuff (Kinda like STS9 sometimes too) :) no doubt they are talented though!

Actually I've seen a few posts on here about soulive,I know what you mean about them getting a little boring but I love that jazz funk groove, kind of suprised you said that tho because the list you gave is mostly techno oriented jam bands and (no offense) they bore the shit out of me,my band played a festival last year where Brothers past and Lotus were the headliners and after about 4 hours of that I was ready to shoot myself.
