i wish i would have been able to see the pixies back in the day. i was watching a show of theirs from 91, wow so different. not really but seeing the pixies live in 2004 is almost as exciting as watch a video from them in the late 80's early 90's. i can only imagine what it would have been like back then.

so who wants to help me build a time machine?

yeah I know what you mean. I think it would be really cool to see them in their hayday, b/f there was tension ya know. I had "river eurphrates' live from 1990, i believe, and man that energy the band had on that stage, I could only imagine how it was like back then. Of course, I'll see them live again, if i can. Seen them 3 times on the last tour, so I am sort of making up for lost time. :p By far, the best show I went to was Coachella. the energy of the crowd that night could not be matched to the crowd of the Berkeley shows I went to. You can SO feel the love that night. Shit, I can't believe it is going to be a year on Sunday. Crazy!

Speaking of shows, it has been reported that the pixies will be adding shows. They are coming to San Jose...YEA!! I hope they will go there when I am there.:)

pittsburg not bad, not bad. but philly is closer. besides they never really played philly last time. camden is across the water.

is the river eurphrates video the one where the stage light is blue or whatever. i use to have that a while ago, got it off kazaa. if its the same video.
  • MeddleDealMeddleDeal Posts: 2,547
yeah it is that exact same one. I had it downloaded on my computer, but it crashed. :( I hope they release all their live shows.

i was thinking the other day (it happens sometimes) and it got me wondering if the pixies hadnt broken up would they have become as popular as they are now sooner, or is their fame mostly due to the fact that they were broken up? i remember a time only a few years ago when not many people knew who they were, even after the fight club movie.
but looking at frank blacks first solo album i think three songs are rumored to have been pixies tunes. surf epic which was a b-side for the album, hang on to your ego, and brackish boy. take it that some people dont like trompe le monde another non-pixies-ish album may have hurt the legacy. everyone still thinks surfer rosa and doolittle are the bread and butter.
so if the pixies would have released another album would it have put them in the mainstream? or would it have made the pixies another band that could only make a few good albums (i think frank blacks s/t is awesome so im not knocking it and everything the pixies did is A+)?
  • MeddleDealMeddleDeal Posts: 2,547
good question. I have been thinking about that too. But if they didn't break up when they did, they would have probably kicked Kim out of the band by then, and probably would have a replacement, since there was tension among the band. But then again, we may never know, b/c I know Kim wanted to be in the band for a long time, it was just frank that was burned out by it all. If they would have released another album, they might have become big, but then we would not have the reunion tour and legions of fans to see them now:)

Have you listened to the Hang On To Your Ego verison that the pixies did? i prefer that verison than to the FB verison.

i think i like fb version better, but it took awhile. the first time i heard it i was like what did he do. its all techno and crap. but its kinda like comparing surfer rosa to doolittle, right? atleast for me. the one im listening to at the time is my favorite.

someone just posted three pixies bbc session songs on dimeadozen. ones that arent on the bbc cd. and hang on to your ego was one of them. so i can now get rid of that crap mp3

have you heard the bbc verison of Into the White? I like that verison better than the B-Sides one. What other songs were on the BBC?

oh btw, I read this today:

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=769&e=3&u=/nm/20050507/music_nm/pixies_dc

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - How do you come back from a comeback? Alt-rockers the Pixies are doing it by mixing it up.

The influential quartet, which reunited last year for its first tour since 1992, will be back on the road beginning in late spring. The band will play festivals, one-night-stands and, in some markets, two shows per night.

"It's a radical difference from last year, because there was no way you can top (a reunion tour)," says Marc Geiger, the band's booking agent at the William Morris Agency. "There can only be one great reunion tour."

The 2004 trek grossed $6.5 million and drew more than 185,000 people, according to Billboard Boxscore. The 50-plus-date tour concluded with a sold-out (24,000 tickets), eight-night run at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.

Geiger says his first instinct for the Pixies -- vocalist/guitarist Frank Black, vocalist/bassist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering -- was to book a nine-week tour stopping in small halls in many markets.

"A cool, underground thing to do would be to do two shows a night," he adds. "B-sides and rarities in show A and hits in show B."

Because of band members' other commitments -- including a new Breeders project for Deal -- the tour's time frame got compressed, Geiger says. But the two-show-a-night concept was still possible in some markets.

The 21-date tour will begin May 26 with two nights at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Ore., and end June 15 at the Agganis Arena in Boston. In addition, the Pixies will headline at Lollapalooza July 23 at Grant Park in Chicago.

Originally, Geiger expected to book two shows a night in at least 15 markets. Instead, there are four: Portland (the tour's opening dates), San Francisco (May 30 at the Warfield), Los Angeles (June 2 at the Wiltern Theatre) and Cleveland (June 8 at the CMJ Rock Hall Music Festival and later at the Scene Pavilion).

These double-doses are geared to the "super fan" who wants to enjoy two full sets, Geiger says. Combination tickets cost $65-$75, and tickets to individual shows are $35-$40.

For the nights with single shows -- which will focus on hits and are also selling for $35-$40 per ticket -- Geiger reconsidered the target markets.

Because last year's reunion tour ran for multiple nights in major markets, the Pixies did not play at least 25 big cities, including Indianapolis and Raleigh, N.C.

For the upcoming tour, Geiger also wanted to stop on the outskirts of major cities. For example, the Pixies will not play New York but will be at the Jones Beach Amphitheater in Long Island June 14. As with the reunion trek, most dates are at medium-sized venues that seat between 2,000 and 7,000.

"It's a way to return to a market after people were turned away last year," Geiger says. "But it's also a way to underplay. We know there are a lot of legs left to play in the future."

Expectations for the dates are high. Geiger notes that the Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles double-shows have sold out, and more dates will be added. Tickets for most stops will be on sale by May 7.

    "luckily" it's an ampitheatre show,

  • doolittle or surfer rosa is where most people start. debaser is off of doolittle but i like surfer rosa just a bit more. they also have a greatest hits. but its not so special. if you can find the now out of print death to the pixies greatest hits get that. one disc is a live show and the other is the greatest hits disc.

letter to memphis is a great song.

I doubt I'd be able to find the death the the pixies greatest hits especially as I'm in Australia. I recon I'll get Doolittle next and then Surfer Rosa. I'm addicted to Trompe Le Monde at the moment! Awesome stuff!!!

Is there anyway to get that "Bam Thwok" song if your in a country thats not compatible with buying songs of itunes?

I don't know if this recommendation is TOTALLY off the wall, but I suggest, Bossnova. I know a lot of fans don't like this album, but I LOVE it!! I don't know, I tend to like things that are rather trippy/odd :D

oh btw, TOMORROW the Pixies DVD "sell out tour" is coming out!! WOHOHOOO. Too bad I won't get paid til Wed.:(

  • bossanova is my favorite also just seems that its always doolittle or surfer rosa.
since you started with trompe le monde you could just go backwards and get bossanova which was the album before. no matter what you pick its gonna be good.

I haven't seen Bossanova anywhere and I know they've got Doolittle at my nearest CD store. I think i'll get that. I think I'll have to save up for it though... I'm babysitting all day one day soon so I'll have enough to buy it then:D:D:D
