whats wrong with live concerts these days...

Almost every concert you go these days is in an indoor arena with popcorn for Christ sakes! Sitting down, one seat per person, etc.

What happenned to the good old days, hardcore shows, people flying around being carried, etc. Turns out you cant even have a beer in the parking lot in most venues without someone coming to bust ya...

Dont you miss that sometimes?

I wish i could have had that old experience.

Reminds of when people buy so much food for the cinema, soon you will be able to buy sunday roasts and just take it in whilst watching the movie.

you need to come over to Europe, the shows over here are still insane.

none of this sitting down nonsense with your arms folded, nope its still GA and it rocks like hell when at the right show, ala PJ or Rancid, or RATM etc

Moshing around like a moron beyond the age of 18 is just stupidity.

I'm thinking most people grew up. There's other ways to enjoy music, like actually stopping to listen to it.

It's fine to jump up and down and wave your arms, but anything beyond that makes you look like a monkey.

hmmmmmnnnn sweeping statement for sure, I would think this is wholly dependant on what is being played
  • moshing can hurt someone, its dumb unless you're away from everyone else in your own moshing section.
crowd surfing is cool by me as long as you're nto grabbing a girl's special parts.
i'm more about dancing, jumping and grooving, and yes, i would like a little more space to do that. and i don't want the asshole next ot me who came to eat nachos and drink beer pissed at me for doing so.

this is the point entirely, even in a chilled environment, a little room to move is always good,

    I couldn't help it...I'm already fucked up
  • Trust me - there is nothing fun or glamorous about a mosh pit. It doesnt add to the show (IMO). I've been in my share and it just ruins an otherwise good time. It is perfect when everyone on the floor has a seat and stands and rocks out in their space.

I'm probably just way too old but even when I was 18 and going to early PJ shows it was just a nightmare to get anywhere close to the stage and see the show. IF you didnt want to get beaten or kicked in the head you got to enjoy the show from at least behind the sound board distance. Bummer...

I hate GA....my gf and I got smashed by flying crowd surfers and the "push" of people towards the front of the stage at lolla 07' was enough GA to last a lifetime...give me a seat so I can enjoy the show instead of wearing someone elses BO or beer

Moshing is stupid... It's just an excuse for people to beat the shit out of each other. Never been a fan of this type of behavior and as previously pointed out takes away from the experience of having a great time. I went GA for Toadies once and a few festivals and it's just a pure annoyance to have to watch for crowd surfers behind you when you paid to see a show, and you have to watch all around you, instead of just focusing on the music.
Thankfully the majority of the bands that I have grown up listening to now play venues with seating and GA. But a few shows the band will adress the GA area and advice them to rock out but be respectful of your neighbors. Standing for several hours also hurts my feet, so I just prefer the seating if it's available.

Sadly, I am seriously considering passing on Toadies in December only due to the venue. It's nothing but standing room with maybe a few seats at the bar. I have seen Toadies multiple times, one of my favorite bands, but at all GA only shows the crowd just does not behave reasonably. :(

  • i've never gotten to experience that kind of stuff. by the time i was old enough to see my favorite bands (collective soul, live, PJ) the crowd around me were old enough to think that that kind of behavior was stupid. bleh, hopefully i'll get to go to europe and see PJ in a GA place. im so tiny the crowd surfers will probably pass right over my head :D

I'd rather have a seat where I can actually see the stage than stand shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of guys who are taller than me and pushing in front of me.

When I was 16, moshing and pushing your way to the front was part of the deal - an expectancy if you will. Beer was spilled and we didn't care, but now, I just don't know....

Oh wait, I do. People keep getting killed at shows for being too drunk, too aggressive, too doped up, or too violent. Give me a seat in a massive venue where I can see the band any day, ensure my safety and still enjoy one hell of a show.

It's not what's wrong with shows, it's what's wrong with the people that go to them and ruin it for the rest of us who can handle GA attendance and not be idiots.

i dont know, you guys are kinda lame. . .mosh pits are cool and add to the concert expierience, so long as there arent assholes swinging fists trying to hurt people or 250 lb dudes crowd surfing, i dont see what the problem is. . .ill take that over the lame asses who sit in their seats and pout because the other people around them arent as lame as they are. . .just my opinion

i agree. personally i dont wade into the moshpit that much, it depends on the crowd. though i do like to get as close as i can without being sucked into the vortex. the reason is cause im claustrophobic and after awhile i get anxious and cant breath. i also like to drink and you cant do that in the pit. so more often than not i stand back where i can watch the guys and girls go nuts. and yeah i wish i was down there among them. but i get a kick out of watching them go wild. must be the anthropologist in me. ;):D

DO NOT PASS ON THE TOADIES.
I saw them 2x recently at small New York GA venues (Webster Hall and Bowery Ballroom)
The crowd was well behaved and the shows rocked. Minimal moshing, mostly just bouncing and fist pumping.

At the last one, (Webster) I was concerned because I am pregnant, and I didn't wanna have to hang in the back the whole time.... I found a nice big block to sit on (An unused speaker, perhaps, about 6 feet high), 8 feet from the stage with a perfect view of the band and the crowd. (Right on Clark's side!)

i repeat, do NOT pass on the Toadies!!!

Yeah, the Toadies got back together and just put out a new album called "no deliverance" back in August.
I have met the band several times (Todd has even given me Backstage passes to a few shows).
The first time I saw them was a one off reunion in Dallas for the St. Patricks day parade back in 2006. That was the worst pit ever. I only lasted 5 songs front row on the rail and had to get out, and trying to get through that drunken fueled pit was a night mare.
I love the Toadies, I just don't like seeing them in a standing room only environment becuse the crowds do not behave and people start fights. When they play Verizon wireless, I can get a seat, but the last 3 shows they played there I got VIP area seats / backstage pass with their working crew and management.
I'll probably go, I just hope the crowd behaves. I have heard as of recently the Toadies have been addressing the crowd to rock out but be nice and respect each other which has toned the behavior down some. I hope that's true. I am just scared shitless of pits cause I am not very big, and I literally thought I was gonna die/ pass out at the first Toadies show. The new album is awesome, you should check it out, if you get the chance.

  • I was just at a Bob Dylan show in NYC last week and there was a guy who was unbelievably intoxicated coming up the aisle of the orchestra. I was in the back of the orch, he was coming from WAY up front (lucky bum!). As he's making his way towards the back, we're all standing and dancing and he's shouting, "Why is everyone standing up back here?!" My best guess is because we weren't falling down drunk like he was.....

I think it's lame when people go and just sit down (acoustic shows excluded). Go home and put on a dvd for that....
    Why go home?
