when moshing first came about it wasnt what it became with the body smashing...moshing used to be a huge group in unison going around in a circle dancing around and having a good time...then some idiots decided to evolve it into smashing into each other which caused alot of injuries and fights

i used to mosh back in the day then it turned into what it is now and i have no part of it now..i would rather just sit back and enjoy the show from afar if thats the case
  • I miss the days when you could get a contact high from just being at a show. The good old 70's when seeing bands like Pink Floyd, Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, Robin Trower, etc. was a stone party where everyone just kind of swayed the same way because they were all buzzed on something good.

Just cause its general admission doesn't mean theres moshing. The last couple shows I saw in clubs (North Mississippi Allstars and Flobots) either didnt have a pit or had a small one that wasn't all that violent. I'd say the real shame is that Pearl Jam isn't going to get to do GA venues for a long time if ever. I was so dissappointed to have my first pearl jam show in an arena, awful way to experience a band live (granted the show was absolutely awesome, but I still would have rather had standing room in front of the band, not the lame fold out chairs)
  • Ive been in pits where everyone respects each other and there is enough room that your not struggling to breath and those are great! You dont have to worry about surviving. And then ive been in other mosh pits like RATM (yeah i should have seen it coming) where i got totally slammed and it took alot of the joy out of the show. I love going to a pearl jam show and having my own space that i dont have to fight to keep and i can just enjoy the music. I dont think there would ever be a "calm" pit at a pearl jam show so ill take the seats everytime.

But yeah i do not understand why you would go to a rock concert and sit down...that is beyond me. I wish those people wouldnt even turn up.

  • Go to a Manu Chao concert! That will tire you out so much
A child's rhyme stuck in my head...
It said "Life is nothing but a dream."
I've spent so many years in question
To find I'd known this all along.

That still happens at plenty of the good punk shows (Rancid, Tiger Army, Street Dogs....). I'm a little old now to be IN it, but I love to see it and be near it.

Almost every concert you go these days is in an indoor arena with popcorn for Christ sakes! Sitting down, one seat per person, etc.

What happenned to the good old days, hardcore shows, people flying around being carried, etc. Turns out you cant even have a beer in the parking lot in most venues without someone coming to bust ya...

    Dont you miss that sometimes?

    Thank Big Government for that.
  • i didnt even bother to read the 3 pages of responses but i want to say to the OP...

...youre going to the wrong shows and seeing the wrong bands in the wrong arenas...
I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club...

    We're old. It happens.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • I don't know what shitty shows you guys have been to, but every show I have ever attended, me and everyone in sight is standing, singing, dancing, jumping and just feeling the music. I've been to a couple thrash metal shows with some of my thrasher friends before, and that's not fun at all. Getting elbowed in the head, tripped to the ground and stomped on is not a fun time. Then trying to get up and out with a bloody face a throbbing head while being stomped on and kicked is not a good at all. I will never mosh again haha.

That's why I go to concerts, for that weird adrenaline rush from the experience...I don't eat or drink during the show, don't need to when I'm totally focused on the music. I like the crowd to be a little out of control, though, it adds to the fun and spontaneous interaction with the band. I also hate it when a few wisps of smoke bring security running. Stupid.
  • moshing went out with acid wash jeans, man

as far as live concerts go...if you live in(near) a big city there are generally tons of good music and shows to see...dig in deep. find your local heroes cause PJ just don't come around enough to fill the void.

club shows are so much fun. it's crazee

  • What bugs me the most is when a band plays a slow song and everyone starts talking to each other like it's fucking classroom discussion time.

I mean, everyone is entitled to a "wow, that last song was really great" and stuff like that. No one has to stay silent. But why pay $60 for a ticket if you're just going to chat with your buddy the whole time?

It distracts the people around you who are really trying to get into the show. My Morning Jacket has a lot of slow, quiet songs and there was a crazy amount of chatting when I saw them in September.

    Short answer... Lawyers.
    ...
The end of Moshing came in the mid-1990s when someone was suing Debbie Gibson because of a Mosh pit. When there is a Mosh Pit at a Debbie Gibson concert... Moshing has officially become obsolete.
    ...
and the best times... the late 70s and early 80s Punk Scene in Los Angeles. Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Germs, X, Geza... The Masque, Gazzarris, The Whiskey, Filthy McNasty's, The Starwood... sure, you got spit on... but, it was real funny to hock a luggie right in some crazy punk rocker's fucking eye and not end up in a fist fight. We didn't care about getting spit on or getting our shitty clothes ripped or torn... we were young... we were stupid... and it was fun.

  • I think that moshing especially crowd surfing is for smaller places like clubs. Crowd surfing is for rock stars and people who pass out in the crowd, not for some douchbag who lands on my head, injures me and thinks I'm not gonna pay him back. A good punch in the nuts, throwing their shoes or glasses is always funny. The best if you see them coming is to get out of the way and watch them land on their face on the concrete.
Let's see those 2013 dates in the southern states.
  • I don't ever remember doing helium at Dead Shows. If its as good as nitrous, drop me a line.

I don't :) I am 37 now, and really enjoy the comfort. I also don't think there is anything inherently wrong with one seat per person. You don't have to sit down, you don't have to be quiet. Want proof? Six characters: PJ@MSG
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
  • I'm not even into my third decade on this planet, but even know Mosh Pits aren't as horrendous as having the Hells Angels acting as security guards in a "free concert" that turned into a mass brawl between them and the concert attendants which resulted in numerous deaths including Denise Jewkes a pregnant woman who was a victim of a bottle throwing incident that resulted in her suffering from a fractured skull. Yeah, the Good Old Days seemed much more relaxed, free and liberating.

Those who enter Mosh Pits do so at their own risk, I've attended a metal festival (Download) on no less than three separate occasions and Mosh Pits were very common everytime I attended. At the 2004 Download Festival, I spent the entirity of Sunday at the Main Stage where I saw Metallica, Slipknot, Ill Nino and Slayer (amongst other bands) and the entire day was littered with Mosh Pits and I was next to a group of people who spent the entirity of the Metallica performance taking snipes at people who were Moshing in and around them. I thought of them as very pretentious and tedious individuals who belong at V-Festival. How anyone can listen to Slipknot live and not mosh, push, jump and go absolutely crazy is beyond any comprehension of mine.

If you don't want to be in a Mosh Pit, then stay away from them and if you do not like Mosh Pits full stop then go to a Bowling For Soup concert, not an American Head Charge concert. ;)

  • I think a lot of the reason there just isn't GA any more has a lot to do with that whole thing with The Who years ago. They opened the doors and people were trampled.

Not so much moshing, but the safety of people camping out for the best seats and then shoving to get to the stage because they were there first or whatever.

    imo. :)
