U2 were back to their larger-than-life best last night as they
launched their spectacular 3D movie.
The Dublin band brought Parnell Street to a standstill when they hit

3D specs.
Bono, 47, led the band on a walkabout as more than 1,000 fans
screamed and cheered to salute the opening of U2 3D at the Jameson
Dublin Film Festival.
And the cheeky frontman told the Irish Daily Mirror he loved seeing
the group blown up to new greatness on the big screen.
He said: "People may think we have big enough heads already -- but
this is really taking it to the next level."
When asked which of his 3D features he would most cringe at, Bono
replied: "Well, I think you can guess one feature that I'm very proud
of -- so I definitely wouldn't be changing that!"
His wife Ali bit her tongue about the brag but did admit: "I think
the guys all look brilliant in 3D, although I see Bono like that
every day in the flesh."

U2 takes the ticket as fans pay the pipers
March 2, 2008
AS if we hadn't seen enough ways to make an extra buck from U2, it
seems they've come up with yet another one.
But now they've just been given a hammering for their latest idea --
and "ripping off" fans -- by legendary pop impresario Harvey Goldsmith.
The band, it would seem, have plans to cash in on a new-found way to
soak music fans: "reselling" tickets for gigs by auction to get more
than their face value.
Goldsmith bumped into Paul McGuinness, the "fifth band member" of U2
(and presumably one of the five mystery employees who were each paid
€5m last year by U2's parent company), at a music industry festival in
France last month.
McGuinness had just given a speech lambasting internet service
providers (ISPs) as thieves for allowing music piracy traffic by their
users. With declining album sales internationally, he was doing his
job and protecting his band's revenue stream. Fair enough.
But when Goldsmith -- who is one of the world's most famous promoters
of live music -- met McGuinness for a drink afterwards and discussed
how the internet has effectively legalised ticket touts, he was
shocked at the response. So much so that Goldsmith used the
conversation as an anecdotal intro for a "keynote address" at the
Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles.
Speaking about McGuinness, he said: "He accused the heroes of Silicon
Valley of being manufacturers of burglary kits. However, when I later
had a drink with Paul and asked him about the secondary ticket market,
he told me that U2 would run its own auction site.
"So on the one hand he is attacking the internet pirates for stealing
his artist's music, but on the other hand he is quite happy for the
very same fans to be ripped off by the secondary ticket market --
providing the money, of course, goes to him and his artist."
U2's management company didn't immediately respond to a request for
clarification but, given the band's propensity to cash in on every
potential revenue stream, it's an obvious one.
Nearly a third of all tickets worldwide are now resold, said
Goldsmith, and the number is growing.
"In order for the fan to be true to its hero, [he or she] is stealing
music on the one hand," Goldsmith said, "and paying through the nose
for a live experience on the other hand.
"This is a mess! Does anybody seriously think that a fan wakes up in
the morning wanting to go see Bruce Springsteen with the sole thought
of how much more he can pay for the ticket than the price advertised?"

LANOIS: U2 WANTS ALBUM OUT THIS FALL
March 25, 2008
posted by: m2
Daniel Lanois has told Canadian radio station CKTB that U2 wants their
new album out this fall. He also described how the studio sessions are
going:
"It's going well. Very inventive, a lot of hopes and dreams in the
room. (Singer) Bono's a hell of a fighter, and as long as he's got me
in there, I'll fight along with him, you know. It's just quality,
innovation, better songs, choruses that will communicate in a stadium
setting."
The Edge has spoken of how his great friendship with fellow bandmates
has contributed to the longevity of U2.
The U2 guitarist credits their three decades of music success to the
comradeship that has bonded them together.
In an intimate interview with RTE presenter John Kelly, to be
broadcast next week, the Edge reveals how it's the music that keeps
him sane.
“There's something about performing our songs in front of a large
crowd which works and it's to do with the fact, I think, that a lot of
those people at those shows are there to celebrate not just their
favourite band, or a favourite band of theirs, but part of their
history,” he said.
The guitarist, known for giving U2 its distinctive sound, has stepped
out from the shadow of front man Bono to speak about the legendary band.
FOUNDATIONS
He thinks their foundations of friendship are what have made them so
stable compared to other rock groups.
“Maybe it's because we were friends before we were a band,” he said.
“So in a sense the friendships were solid, so when it came to those
moments of conflicts or difficulty, we kind of were able to skirt
around the big conflicts and diffuse the situation and so we're
operating in pretty much the same way now as we always did,” he added.
As friendships go, it's been very successful for all the four members
of the group: Bono, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen and the Edge, who have
sold a total of 170 million albums worldwide.
Little did they expect when they formed in 1976 that they would make
their fortune through their solid punk sound, catchy lyrics and Bono's
belting voice.
The Edge is very aware that fame and success come with a lot of
responsibility. He takes this burden very seriously.
“I think it's something that you always are aware of and it's
something that I would remind myself of often,” he said.
The man, who grew up in Malahide and was inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame with U2 in 2005, knows that he has been fortunate
with the way his life has panned out.
“Here we are and with our friends. We are some of the luckiest people
that have ever lived and once you bear that in mind, then first of
all, I think you've a responsibility to enjoy your life.
CHARITY
“I also think you've a responsibility to take advantage of your
situation, to make things better and to spread it out a bit.”
The Edge has taken a quieter role in charity work compared to bandmate
Bono but he has been actively involved with Greenpeace, Live 8 and
Make Poverty History.
The full interview with the Edge will be broadcast on Monday night at
11.30pm on RTE1 television.

Live Nation agrees to 12-year pact with U2
By Yinka Adegoke
Mon Mar 31, 2008
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Live Nation Inc said on Monday it has reached an agreement for a 12-year global contract to handle the merchandising, digital and branding rights as well as the touring of Irish group U2.
Live Nation has been expanding its business model to develop more far-reaching and deeper relationships with artists beyond just handling their touring.
The deal with U2, one of the world's biggest rock bands, comes just five months after Live Nation announced a comprehensive partnership with pop star Madonna, which included her coveted recording rights.
The company would not reveal financial terms of the U2 deal though analyst David Joyce at Miller Tabak estimated that the deal would "likely be in the $100 million range."
Live Nation said U2 will continue the band's long-term recording and publishing relationship with Universal Music Group, a unit of French media giant Vivendi.
"It's not a do-or-die situation that we have to be involved in the recordings," Live Nation Chairman Michael Cohl said in an interview with Reuters. "We'd prefer to, but it's not always available."
The deal with Madonna, which included the recording rights, was estimated to be worth $120 million over 10 years including a three-album commitment after the artist submits her last album to her current music company, Warner Music Group.
Its partnership with U2 will now include merchandise and licensing rights, sponsorship and strategic alliances, digital rights, fan club/Web sites and other marketing and creative services.
Cohl said the new model will help boost the overall company's profit margins. Analysts have said that touring and ticketing have traditionally been a low-margin business.
Several of the company's executives had managed U2's tours for more than 20 years.
DIVERSIFICATION
Live Nation's attempts to diversify its business and win artists from music labels come as the major recording companies are also trying to reinvent their business and win control of touring, digital and merchandise rights of their artists.
Joyce, who rates Live Nation a "buy," said that as the company tries to bolster relationships with its artists, this latest deal should help its efforts to retain live event market share from existing competitors such as AEG.
But he said there is a question whether music labels will fend off Live Nation's expansion attempts as they attempt to diversify themselves.
The music companies are keen to replace lost revenue caused by falling recorded sales. Fans are buying fewer CDs and not purchasing enough digital music to make up for the shortfall.
The major labels have started signing some artists to so-called 360-degree deals which include recording as well as publishing, touring, digital and other rights.
Cohl said his company will focus on signing other major artists rather than developing new acts such as a traditional music label or publishing house.
"Our intention is to work with artists who are already making it or on their way to making it," he said.
Live Nation said its new strategy will also include its Web site LiveNation.com, which Cohl said was aiming to become the biggest music portal on the Web through a mixture of ticketing, merchandise sales as well as fan clubs and other features.
Shares in Live Nation were up 3.5 percent, or 41 cents, to $12.24 in Monday morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

U2 Returns To Studio, Preps Early Reissues
April 09, 2008, 10:20 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
After an Easter break, U2 is back in the studio in Dublin to work on
its next album with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. "Everyone
[is] still hoping the new album will be out this year," reads a post
on U2.com.
The as-yet-untitled disc will be followed by a 2009 tour, U2's first
since recently cementing a 12-year deal with Live Nation Artists.
In other U2 news, Universal has set a July 22 release for remastered,
expanded editions of the band's first three albums: "Boy" (1980),
"October" (1981) and "War" (1983).
Guitarist the Edge is overseeing the reissues, which will include the
original album on a single-disc, 180-gram vinyl and in a two-CD
package featuring B-sides, rare tracks and live material.
The reissue program began last fall with "The Joshua Tree," which
featured a previously unreleased video for "Red Hill Mining Town" and

Band to close failing hotel if plans to redevelop it are refused
By Eoin Reynolds
Bono and the Edge yesterday warned the band's historic Dublin hotel
could close if a pounds 150million redevelopment is blocked.
Heritage groups yesterday began an appeal against U2's plans for the
famous Clarence on the banks of the Liffey.
As he went into the hearing, guitarist the Edge warned the building's
future is under threat.
He said: "The main reason why we have applied for this development is
to preserve the hotel into the future and obviously financially.
"It's not doing as well as it could and we feel this is the only way
to ensure it remains on this site."
It is thought the business has lost @12million in the last 10 years
and its owners, who include the two U2 stars, want a complete revamp
of the site.
They want to demolish the 44-bedroomed Georgian building and
transform it into a nine-storey, 141-bedroom, five-star hotel and spa
complete with signature restaurant, bar and fresh food market.
They claim their futuristic design would put the finished structure
among the top 10 hotels in the world.
Originally built as a hotel in 1852, it was a well-known haunt of
country people and parish priests visiting Dublin until it was taken
over in 1992 by the U2 duo. Since then it has become a hit with some
of the biggest names in the worlds of politics and showbiz including
former U.S. President Bill Clinton and supermodels Naomi Campbell,
Christy Turlington and Kate Moss.
However, the building is a listed structure and heritage groups said
the new design is out of keeping with its history.
Exceptional circumstances are required to demolish a protected
structure and the Department of the Environment has said a design of
outstanding merit does not qualify.
But the Edge hit back saying the hotel will become dormant if
heritage groups get their way.
He added: "Conservation for conservation sake doesn't make sense.
It's something that's not being used.
"It's lying dormant like a missing tooth in the smile of the Liffey
frontage. We want to reconstitute it and bring life back to the
city."
He insisted the current plan is the only one in town and if it gets
the thumbs down the Clarence could lie idle for years.
Dublin City Council has already granted permission but heritage
groups including An Taisce appealed that decision.
An Taisce points out the Liffey is a special conservation area and
say this design would be more suited to the Docklands.
But the design team said the ambition is to make the Clarence one of
the top 10 hotels in the world.
The hearing is expected to last at least two days.
Tomorrow is the last day to donate to the African Well Fund's annual
"Bono's Birthday Well" fundraiser.
The first drive in honor of our favorite front-man was held in 2003
with the intent of collecting $1,000 to build one well in Bono's
honor. That year, the African Well Fund collected more than $10,000.
The second year, $15,000 was raised. More than $26,000 was collected
for Bono's Birthday Well in 2005. Over $32,000 was collected in 2006.
Donations are tax-deductible and can be made in any amount. Once you
contribute, you have the option of signing an online birthday card for
Bono.
It was a far cry from the glitzy red carpets of Hollywood, but
yesterday a small, stony beach in the south of France became a
hotspot for high-profile celebrity spotting.
Music and movie royalty rubbed shoulders as the Edge took a seaside
stroll along the French Riviera with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and
their ever-growing brood of children.
A heavily pregnant Jolie, who is rumoured to be expecting twins, was
forced to rely on the steady hands of her male companions as she
negotiated the rocky beach along the picturesque town of Eze-sur- Mer.
Dressed in a multi-coloured, flowing maxi dress, the 32-year-old
Oscar-winning actress was helped up by the U2 guitarist when she took
a tumble on the bumpy seashore as the group headed to Bono's holiday
home on the sun-soaked Mediterranean coast.
The famous couple were later seen admiring the views from the balcony
of Bono's villa as the U2 frontman and his wife Ali Hewson played
host to their guests.
Pitt, 44, and Jolie are said to be staying on the Riviera for the
summer, fuelling speculation that the pair, whose children have all
been born in different countries, are planning to stay in France
until the birth of their child. The couple were accompanied yesterday
by two of their four children, Ethiopian-born daughter Zahara Marley,
three, and Vietnamese son Pax Thien, four.
Pitt and Jolie are parents to another adopted son, Maddox, who is six
and from Cambodia, along with their biological daughter, 22-month-old
Shiloh Nouvel.
U2 soundman Joe O’Herlihy has revealed that following a stint in
Dublin’s Windmill Lane Studios, the band are set to do some warm
weather recording overseas.
"I'm heading out to France to begin working with them on it," Joe
tells hotpress.com. "They decided they needed a few rays while they
were working on the new songs. But things are in full swing working
towards a new album. We're hoping to have something in the can come
September/October. We'll know in the next couple of months how things
shape up but that's what they're aiming for. All things being equal
they will more than likely tour in 2009. They love it. It's their life
and it's what they do."
Joe has more to say about U2, The Undertones and his beloved Cork in
the next issue of Hot Press, out on Thursday.

Irish rockers U2's longtime manager PAUL MCGUINESS narrowly escaped

The music mogul, who also manages the careers of singer PJ Harvey and
New York rockers The Rapture, had to be taken to hospital after being

Ireland.
A source tells Ireland's Sunday World newspaper, "It was a pretty bad

"He's still getting over it and knows he has had a lucky escape."
According to Broadwayworld.com, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is the new

LANOIS: 'ONE OF THE GREAT, INNOVATIVE U2 RECORDS'
June 06, 2008

Fanning's questions in italics:
"We're on the home stretch. We're gonna deliver in about three weeks

fall. It's going great."
Are you telling me that all the tracks are done, more or less?
"Yeah, yeah, yeah - it's all done and we're just finishing the vocals.
Bono's in great form, singing fantastic. Everybody's in high spirits."
Is it anything like the previous stuff?
"I think we can safely say it's one of the great, innovative records

No freebies to come with the new U2 release
09 June 2008
Coldplay and Radiohead have been distributing their music in new ways
by giving fans their music for free, but do not expect the same from
rock giants U2.
Their new album is due out this year and U2's manager Paul McGuinness
explained to 6 Music why they would not follow in Radiohead's footsteps.
He said: "There will be events around the release of the album but for
U2 physical sales are still an enormous part of our business and we
still sell a lot of actual CDs.
"We will obviously work with whatever technology is available to make
the release of the new record as interesting as possible."
Mc Guinness feels Radiohead's free giveaway and pay-what-you-like
scheme was not a very business-savvy move.
Speaking to 6 Music, he said: "We should all be aware that Radiohead's
honesty box release of their album to some extent backfired."
Continuing: "Even though it was available on their own website for no
money at all, if that was what you preferred to pay - 60 to 70 per
cent of the people who downloaded the record stole it anyway even
though it was available for free."
With regards to an actual release date McGuinness revealed they are
hoping to put the record out in Autumn 2008.
"The exact date is not clear yet but I would think towards the end of
October," McGuinness said.

LONDON: Irish rockers U2 are selling a painting by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat valued at up to 6 million pounds (US$12 million; €7.7 million), Sotheby's auction house said Thursday.
Sotheby's said "Untitled (Pecho/Oreja)" will go under the hammer in London on July 1 and is expected to fetch between 4 million pounds and 6 million pounds (US$7.8 million and US$12 million; €5 million and €7.5 million).
It was bought by members of U2 in 1989 after being spotted by bass player Adam Clayton in a New York gallery and has hung in their Dublin studio ever since.
Basquiat was one of the most prominent American artists of the 1980s, lauded for his strong use of color and the social commentary in his work. He died of a heroin overdose in 1988, aged 27.
"Untitled (Pecho/Oreja)," painted when the artist was 22, combines a stylized human head, reminiscent of a ritual mask, covered in marks and doodles.
In May 2007 a Basquiat painting sold for US$14.6 million in New York, a record for the artist.

U2 spec-tacular is here

They looked more like the Blues Brothers than rock superstars -- but
U2 were back to their larger-than-life best last night as they
launched their spectacular 3D movie.
The Dublin band brought Parnell Street to a standstill when they hit

And the cheeky frontman told the Irish Daily Mirror he loved seeing

replied: "Well, I think you can guess one feature that I'm very proud
of -- so I definitely wouldn't be changing that!"

Listen up U2. We like ye, but not that much.

Once you
