Lots of little bits of news to pass along about the remasters, so

* Sean, a reader in England, tells us that "U2 Live in Paris" audio is
available on the UK iTunes Music Store, and was added at the same time
as the three new, remastered albums. It's the 18-song set that
appeared as the bonus DVD on the deluxe Joshua Tree box. Look for it
on your iTunes now if interested, or check tomorrow if you're in North
America.
* Peter L. tells us that "Angels Too Tied To The Ground" isn't listed
on the remastered War CD sleeve, suggesting it was a last-minute
addition to the bonus CD. He also tells us the bonus CD tracklisting
is messed up.
* Speaking of that, the deluxe Boy sleeve has a problem with its
tracklist, too. Allegra told us about it, and I wrote about it (with
photo) on our blog.
An alert @U2 reader pointed us in the direction of a ticket broker in
the Netherlands apparently selling tickets to two U2 concerts allegedly
on July 9 and 10 at De Kuip in Rotterdam. Neither Live Nation, U2 or
Principle Management have made any official tour annoucements. Do not

U2 Set Sale For a New Horizon
Exclusive: New Studio Album & Tracklist Revealed
Sunday Mirror, July 29, 2008
Stephen Maguire and Seamus Ross
It's the beautiful day millions of U2 fans around the globe have
waited patiently to see for the past four years.
Now we can reveal details of the supergroup's long-awaited new album.
It is believed to be titled No Line On The Horizon and will be on
sale in music stores on November 14.
The band's record company Universal has already registered the
internet domain name nolineonthehorizon.com - prompting speculation
this will be the new record.
And among the songs to be released on what many music insiders are
calling the band's best work to date are Moment Of Surrender, For
Your Love, Love Is All We Have Left and One Bird.
Others include If I Could Live My Life Again, The Cedars Of Lebanon
and No Line On The Horizon.
Earlier this week a 19-strong film crew headed to the Spanish city of
Cadiz to shoot a video for the band's first single from the new album
although the band were not believed to be present.
Last night an insider said the U2 machine is gearing up for the
release of one of the most keenly-awaited albums in recent years.
"The album is more or less all in the bag except for a few minor
details," the source revealed. A lot of people have been waiting a
long time for this album as they do with every U2 album.
"But the word coming out is that the band is very, very happy with
the end product and when U2 are happy it should be quite a piece of
work. They're not easy to please."
Legendary producer Steve Lillywhite, who has worked with U2 for more
than two decades, said the new album had blown him away.
It is the first original work since the band released the smash-hit
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb in November 2004. It sold an
incredible 10 million copies and picked up eight Grammy Awards.
But music commentators think the new record could be even bigger for
Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam.
U2 are also expected to announce details of a huge worldwide tour,
which would almost certainly include a number of nights at the new O2
Arena in the Dublin Docklands - formerly known as the Point Theatre.
In a flurry of activity, the group have just re-released their first
three albums - Boy, October and War - in extended formats and with
previously unreleased tracks.
It has led to that rare thing - U2 making a mistake.
A quantity of the re-released War albums have been printed with
incorrect track listings inside a booklet.
But ironically, it won't hit sales, as the botched items are likely
to become collector's pieces.

2009 should be great! U2 and most likely PJ touring. I wonder if they'll even do some shows together? I get the feeling that this album will be one of their best. The last two have been so simple and straight forward. I think this time they challenge us.
Deluxe editions of U2's first three albums show how the young band developed its sound.
By Robert Hilburn, Special to The Times
August 13, 2008
Like the Beatles, Garth Brooks and so many other mega-sellers before, the members of U2 flunked several auditions before a record company was willing to sign them. In fact, the band's potential was once viewed as so limited that CBS in England, the label that finally took a chance on the group, reconsidered and dropped it after releasing just two U2 singles.
Thanks to a new, deluxe edition of the quartet's debut album, "Boy," we can hear those early recordings and imagine what our vote would have been if we were on the CBS staff.
Though some of the band's strengths are obvious, several things about the recordings, especially "Out of Control," remind you so much of David Bowie that CBS execs must have wondered if U2 had any ideas of its own. Three of five songs the band recorded for CBS reappeared on "Boy," which was released by Island Records, but the Bowie-esque touches had been toned down.
In addition to the CBS tunes, the revealing two-disc package comes with a remastered version of the "Boy" album and inviting extras, including insightful reflections by the Edge.
About "11 O'Clock Tick Tock," the band's first single on Island, the U2 guitarist tells us how the band's drum sound changed dramatically after that record. "The trend of the day," the Edge writes, "was recording studios without any room reverb or ambience. The playing room at Windmill Lane [studios] was designed to be totally dead, and you can hear it on the drums. It wasn't until the 'Boy' sessions that we figured out that we had to pull the drum kit into the entrance hall, after the receptionist had gone home, to get a decent drum sound. With its three-story stairwell and stone and tiled surfaces, it was a great live room."
These added features make the deluxe editions of "Boy" and two other new U2 rereleases ("October" and "War") more valuable than simply the single-disc editions, which offer only the remastered versions of the original albums. Any band wanting to preserve its album history in smart, appealing fashion should use these collections as a model.
U2
"Boy"
Island/Interscope/Universal Music Enterprises
The back story: Powered by Bono's enchanting vocal and the Edge's radiant guitar lines, "I Will Follow" was such an immediately appealing calling card for U2 that the band played it twice during its local debut at the old Country Club in Reseda in March 1981.
It's clear in this collection that U2 was so certain it had a potential classic in "I Will Follow" that it overruled Steve Lillywhite, one of England's most respected producers.
Lillywhite asked the band to leave the studio during the "I Will Follow" mixing process, which involves balancing the sound level among various instruments. About the moment, the Edge writes, "It didn't sit well with us not being there, but we were callow 18-year-olds and Steve a veteran of many great records, so we let him do it his way. It's a great mix, but it was too acoustic-guitar-heavy for us."
The result was the band sat in with Lillywhite on a second mixing session and made sure the sound emphasized the electric guitar lines that came to define the U2 sound.
U2
"October"
Island/Interscope/Universal Music Enterprises
The back story: This was a nervous time for U2 because the 1981 "October" album didn't live up to the promise of "I Will Follow," causing speculation in the industry that U2 had blown its chance. Looking back on the making of the album, the Edge points out in the CD booklet that the band was in desperate shape, partly because Bono's book of lyrics had been stolen on the tour.
"It was obvious to everyone that we were driving with two wheels over the edge of the cliff, and it drew from us, and particularly Bono, a level of creativity that we had not seen before," he writes.
U2
"War"
Island/Interscope/Universal Music Enterprises
The back story: This was U2's creative and commercial breakthrough, thanks to such exquisite and purposeful songs as "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Among the extras is a series of remixes of "Two Hearts Beat as One" aimed at dance clubs, a big change for the band. On this point, the Edge writes, "This was in the days before sampling and digital recording, so the scope to reconfigure a track over a dance beat was very limited. However, in these remixes, you can hear where things were headed."

U2 frontman Bono has inadvertently given French fans a preview of
their new album, which is reportedly called No Line On The Horizon.
Cheeky fans wandering near the Irish singer and activist's home in
Eze, in the south Of France, heard his distinctive voice booming out
of the family's villa and recorded clips of it on a mobile phone.
Song snippets of the previously unreleased tracks are on YouTube and
fans now expect they will on the supergroup's 12th studio record, out
on November 15.
While the band are yet to confirm the mooted album moniker, their
record company Universal, has registered the domain name
nolineonthehorizon.com
British newspapers have reported song titles for the record include
For Your Love, Love is All We Have Left, One Bird, Moment of
Surrender, If I Could Live My Life Again and The Cedars of Lebanon.
Their first single is believed to be called Sexy Boots but it will
more likely be the title track, for which their longtime visual
collaborator, control director Anton Corbijn has shot a video.

Both songs sound fantastic. The latter one is really promising. I like what sounds like synthesizers in the background and how it shifts into what sounds like an almost War-esque refrain.
Does anyone remember a year or two back when someone on this beach recorded an entire song-All My Life? Any chances of that making the album?

New U2 album leaked online after Bono plays songs too loudly
Telegraph.co.uk
August 15, 2008
By DAVID THOMAS
The first studio album by Irish rock band U2 in four years has been
leaked onto the Internet – after lead singer Bono played tracks too
loudly in his holiday home and they were recorded by a passer-by.
The songs downloaded from outside the 48-year-old's villa in Eze, on
France's Côte d'Azur, were later uploaded onto video-sharing website
YouTube.
According to The Sun, the U2 fan was walking along the beach outside
the villa when he recognised the singer's voice on the track booming
out from a stereo in the palatial holiday home.
The songs are believed to be from the band's follow-up to 2004's How
to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
There is no official title for the album yet. But No Line on the
Horizon has been registered as an Internet domain name by the
Universal Music Group, owner of the band's record label, Interscope.
Four tracks were posted on YouTube, including the album title track
and first single, Sexy Boots.
The video footage was available to view this morning but had no sound.
A sign on the website said: "This video contains an audio track that
has not been authorized by all copyright holders. The audio has been
disabled."

Scratch the new U2 album off your Christmas list. Singer Bono says the album, which had been anticipated for release this fall, will now arrive sometime in 2009. But he says there’s good reason for the delay.
“We’ve hit a rich songwriting vein and we don’t want to stop,” Bono says on the band’s website. “It gets a bit dark down here but looks like we’ve found diamonds not coal. I thought a while back we might have the album wrapped by now, but why come up above ground now if there’s more priceless stuff to be found?”
The group has been at work since last year in recording studios in Dublin, Morocco and France, working on the follow-up to 2004’s “How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb,” which won a Grammy for album of the year. They’ve piled up 50 or 60 tracks and they’re still at it, according to the website post.
“When we set out on this record it was Larry [Mullen Jr., the band’s drummer] who came up with the plan not to have a plan,” Bono says. “He put up this idea that wouldn’t it be great just to make music for its own sake, not for the purpose of a live show or on album but just to see what we’re capable of.”
In other words, how to dismantle a fall release schedule?
New U2 album provisionally slated for February 2009
05 Sep 2008
Following on from Bono's comments that 2009 will be their year, it's
confirmed: there will definitely be no new U2 album this year.
A band insider confirmed to Hot Press that February 2009 is now the
likely launch date for the band's long-awaited follow-up to How To
Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. That new target was set, Hot Press
understands, at meetings that have taken place over the past 36 hours
in Nice, where the band have been based for the latter part of the
summer.
"There's still some details to be decided before the date is confirmed
one hundred percent, but that's the plan," the source confirmed.
Bono has already spoken about how U2 intend to make 2009 their year.
"This is our chance for us to defy gravity once again," he enthuses.
"We have what it takes, we have the songs, new rhythms and a guitar
player who is not ready to re-enter earth's atmosphere until he's
taken a slice of the moon!"

However, in these remixes, you can hear where things were headed."
i bought War and Boy. pretty great job with the remaster. the War bonus disc sucked. i mean fucking hell, how many disco versions of new years day can one take. charlie brown said it best.....UGGGGGH!!!

I still listen to that album a lot

Both songs sound fantastic. The latter one is really promising. I like what sounds like synthesizers in the background and how it shifts into what sounds like an almost War-esque refrain.
Does anyone remember a year or two back when someone on this beach recorded an entire song-All My Life? Any chances of that making the album?

The audio has been
disabled."

If you'll be attending the Toronto Film Festival next month, be sure
to check out the new documentary It Might Get Loud, which features
Jimmy Page, Jack White and...The Edge!
Apparently the film chronicles one full day when the trio connected to
share stories about how they each created their signature
guitar-playing styles.
There is also rumored to be "new music" from each musician (though
it's not clear whether Edge's contribution is a solo piece or part of
U2's new repertoire).[Thx to Mike for the news tip.]
