Best bet: U2's 360-Degree Tour
Baltimore Sun
September 4, 2009
By Sam Sessa
Regardless of what you think of their latest album, U2 is in top form for their latest tour.
Bono still has his voice, the Edge still has his chops and the epic 360-Degree Tour is drawing rave reviews.
So far, the set list has been heavy on songs from the band's 2009 release, "No Line on the Horizon," but is also peppered with hits like "Beautiful Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday."
Recession be damned -- the concert-in-the-round, with its giant claw-shaped canopy, is rumored to be one of the biggest stagings the pop music world has ever seen. It's only fitting, considering U2's status as one of the world's biggest bands.
If you go: U2 performs at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at FedEx Field, 1600 FedEx Way in Landover. Tickets are $30-$250. Call 410-547-7328 or go to ticketmaster.com.
What happens when you put The Edge, Jack White, and Jimmy Page in a revealing music docmentary? ("It Might Get Loud," in theaters now)? U2's axman spills.

EW: What was your first reaction when you were asked to be in this documentary?
Edge: I'd met Jimmy once, and waived at Jack at an awards show, but I'd never had a proper conversation with either. I thought that, no matter what happened, it was going to be interesting. There was a sense of the unknown.
EW: What was the weirdest moment?
Edge: It was the early, more tentative phase, where three of the most well-known guitar players in the world weren't making a sound that was particularly great. You don't walk out there and create something great just because you have in the past. And, early on, there wasn't much to write home about. [Laughs] We did "Bullet the Blue Sky" for a second, and it was like, "Whoa, this is really not going anywhere." Then, we played "In My Time of Dying," slowly you just see people relaxing. There's a certain spark at the end of that session where a little bit of magic comes through.
EW: Is "Loud" just for guitar geeks?
Edge: It's not a guitar players' documentary. It will appeal to anybody interested in the creative process. David Guggenheim [the director, who also helmed "An Inconvenient Truth"] managed to avoid all the awful cliches. "Spinal Tap" is the nightmare scenario. In the wrong hands, the subject matter could become farcical, nerdy, and not interesting.
EW: Got a favorite White Stripes song?
Edge: "Seven Nation Army" is amazing. I wrote this sketch of a song, which I was really excited about. I went over to my brother's house and told him, "Dik, I gotta play you this new tune!" After about 16 bards he says, "Edge, that is 'Seven Nation Army.'" I said, "What? Get out of here. Is not!" I went back and listened, and it wasn't exactly, but it was way too close. I played it for Jack, and he was like, "Mmm, it's a bit close, isn't it?"
EW: U2's tour hits the U.S. next week. What should we expect?
Edge: For years we've been trying to figure out a way to make those big stadiums more intimate. So with this new production design, the stage is [at least] a hundred feet closer to the back of the stadium. And we've created these ramps that go into the center of the crowd, so we're able to make that connection with the audience. We are constantly evolving our live show, because if you get too strict about the format, it just starts to lose the sense of spontaneity and jeopardy: it can go anywhere.

I love me some U2...but Im afraid Muse is going to blow them out of the water..Bono and Co might not know whats going to hit them when they see Muse open..maybe it'll make U2 step up their game! these shows will be EPIC for both bands
MUAHAHAHAHAHHAAAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
i just bought a GA ticket from some benevolent force!
I FINALLY GET TO SEE U2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MUAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
yes. i'm excited. this will be my first u2 concert
nevermind. my temporary check (since i switched from washington mutual to wachovia and didn't have my checks yet) looked fishy apparently so she sold my ticket instead of asking for another form of payment.

heartbroken doesn't even BEGIN to cover it.
you're not going?
well supposedly she's waiting on another pair and is letting me get first dibs but i'm still looking for a ticket. as of right now, no ticket, though i'm staying hopeful and positive, just really really bummed.
i was able to find a stream to the chicago show via a u2 message board, which was pretty cool. I don't think i've done that before w/PJ (missed the at&t thing). songs 12 through the end was a good run.

I can see what your saying, with the stage and special effect and all, I myself had fun. I drove from Southern Ontario, enjoyed the entire weekend in Chicago, first time to Chicago but not my last, just had an amazing fun filled weekend. For such a big city I found it very easy to get around.

its surprising if they stray off the same setlist night after night for the most part
i thought chicago night 1 was a great setlist and even heard some live on a streaming audio site. nite 2 was not my fav although the hardcores like ybr.
