Besides, didn't Dave A rip off "Why Go" with his drum beat for "Go"?

It's funny that you mention that. You see, back when they were writing and recording Vs., they were short on material. So what happened was: they covered Why Go, their own song, but called it Go in an attempt to fool audiences into thinking they had plenty of fresh material. They had to one-up their eleven song predecessor, Ten, and make Vs. twelve songs long. So in actuality, Why Go has been ripped off before. But why all the fuss now that Metallica follows in the mighty (yet sneaky) steps of our beloved Pearl Jam? Isn't that a good thing? They wanna be Pearl Jam! Things have never been clearer...in my rearviewmirror. This whole debate is rather silly. Metallica rocks. Pearl Jam rocks. Besides, hasn't anyone noticed how strikingly similar Spin the Black Circle sounds to Metallica's signature sound???

Ya but it just so happens that Metallica was very close by at Bonnaroo for Pearl Jam's set and they played Why Go. Then miraculously a Metallica song with Why Go dripping from it appears. A kawinkydink, I THINK NOT!

I seriously doubt Metallica were still writing the music for the album in June

i think metallica is a terrible band
    good lead guitarist

    thats about it
  • every riff in rock history sounds ripped off from something tony iommi wrote anyways.

Walmart has posted 30 second clips of the upcoming Metallica album, and the second song titled "The End Of The Line" sounds suspiciously like "Why Go" to me. What do you all think?

Now I'm not going to go into a major fit about this or anything, and the rest of the song may sound nothing like Why Go... but see if you guys hear it too in this small clip.

    They DEFINITELY must love TEN.......

This is majorly old news. And Kenny Wayne is a very talented young man even WITHOUT ledbetter. He's been around for quite a while.

  • i dont know i think this is kind of weak to be honest with you, if you listen to enough rock n roll you can find very similar riffs & beats between all kinds of different bands there is only so much that a band or an artist can do that is totally original - you hear music, you are influenced by it and it comes out in your work - a band that has been around for 25 years will experiment - some good, some God awful in metallica's case and i really think thats all it is i don't think they are trying to rip off pearl jam

Just in recent memory i can think of some examples of this

RHCP "Dani California" sounding like "Last Dance with Mary Jane"
Springsteen "Radio Nowhere" sounding like "867-5309/Jenny"
Tom Petty "Saving Grace" sounding like a George Thorogood song (the name of which escapes me at the moment)

so in my opinion, that is all it is
9/1/2000 - E-Centre, Camden, 'Sometimes' started and I was hooked...
  • It doesn't matter if they ripped off a PJ song.

All that matters is that the day their CD comes out, you go and download it illegaly - then send a thank you note to Lars.

  • Well, the Metallica album has leaked and I'm pleased to hear that the whole song doesn't sound like Why Go. However, the Why Go drums/riff does make a few visits during the Metallica song.

I imagine the following YouTube link will get pulled fast, since Metallica seems to be doing their best to purge the leak, but have a listen while you can:

In all seriousness, am I the only one who cannot hear the similarities between GTF and GTC? They sound like two totally different songs.

That said however there apparently was some talk about it back 10 years ago, and I thought it was SUPER FUCKING COOL that when Robert Plant played with PJ at the Katrina benefit they played Given To Fly and then went right into Going to California.

It's funny but the first 5 times or so I could see it, but I've tried a few times since and I can't really anymore. I know that's wierd but I can't. If I heard it at first it must be a little tiny bit similar.
  • it does sound a bit like why go but i definately wouldnt classify it as a "rip off" - probably just a coincidence
