We lived in Florida for a number of years and still have interests there. Of course there are possible downsides to living there but that is true of everywhere I have lived.

Congratulations on finding a place you want to be. Happy retirement!!

Actually, retirement became a thing in the late 1800s to early 1900's

But hey Stove, look, if it makes you feel better, having been born in 1951, I'm what they call a "boomer" (I don't use that term myself-  I prefer "old fuck"), and I'm still working.  I can't do full time, but I still have my little book and vinyl business, and I put in a couple of hours here and there at the used bookstore downtown.  I worked my ass off for just two hours this evening and when I got home, I flopped on the bed and felt like total shit.  When I got up, it felt like I weighed 500 pounds.  Retirement?  Fuck that, I don't have a pension.  Hack or pack!

Here's another thing I'll say about "boomers" and retirement.  A lot of "gen X" and "gen Z" people seem to think the vast majority of "boomers" have it fat and easy with retirement.  I got to thinking about that and the people my age and how many of them have a cushy retirement.  I've said this before on AMT: No very many.  So I thought, "Are all my friends losers?  I don't think so."
So I did a little research. Here's a sampling of what I found:

    https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/032216/are-we-baby-boomer-retirement-crisis.asp
"Insufficient financial resources paint a gloomy picture for many retirees"

    https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/two-thirds-of-peak-baby-boomers-are-not-financially-prepared-for-retirement-302120313.html
"Based on their assets and their likelihood of living up to 20 or more years in retirement, two-thirds of Peak Boomers will be challenged to maintain their lifestyles in retirement."

    https://www.barrattorneys.com/blog/baby-boomers-by-the-numbers-retirement-looks-bleak/
"Many baby boomers-the 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964-have retired or are heading toward retirement, with roughly 10,000 retiring every day. Are they prepared? Based on savings statistics and actuarial charts, the answer is a resounding no. Insufficient savings and a lack of planning paint a gloomy picture for many retirees. This means more people working into their 70s and 80s, more poverty among elders, and more public resources devoted to health care for seniors."

    https://www.insurancethoughtleadership.com/personal-lines/baby-boomers-retirement-crisis
Baby Boomers are facing a retirement crisis, with fewer savings in their pension pots at the point of retirement or facing the prospect of running out of money while in retirement.

You can find page after page of this information?  Shall I go on?  OK, fine I won't.  And I hope the boomer bashers will do likewise.
    Thanks.

It is not complicated. Save some of your income. For a long time. Put some money in a 401K, IRA accounts, pensions etc. Buy real estate ahead of time. Do not look at them, just keep contributing. Same with 529s if you have kids. One day you will look and see a bounty. If my kids go to a state school, its paid for. Syracuse or Duke well that's another story.
