Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan says dozens of firefighters from Alberta and British Columbia will help fight wildfires in California, and the federal government is co-ordinating efforts with the provinces to deploy resources.
Sajjan says in a social media post that 60 firefighters from the two provinces will be deployed as soon as Monday, and that Canadian officials are working to identify and prepare more resources to send in the days ahead.
Alberta announced last week that it is sending up to 40 wildland firefighters with more personnel, waterbombers and contracted night-vision helicopters ready to deploy.
B.C.’s forests minister, meanwhile, has said a crew from the province’s wildfire service left for California on Saturday afternoon to help battle the wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area.
Quebec said Friday it will send two more firefighting aircraft to California, a day after one of the province’s water bombers collided with a drone while battling the wildfires. The Canadian-made CL-415 was one of the province's two planes that was already helping in the wildfire.
Their crews are sent to California every fall as part of an annual contract that has been in place for more than 30 years...

Yeah, I saw the news story about some idiot flying a drone so close to the plane that it actually crashed into its left wing! That water bomber is out of service while they repair an actual hole in the leading edge of the wing. Man, I hope they catch that fool, and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law! Sorry, Canada.

SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday expanded the special legislative session he called to defend the state's progressive policies against the incoming Trump administration, announcing that legislators would also prioritize addressing the state's wildfire crisis.
Newsom is calling for lawmakers to accelerate $1 billion in emergency response funding for the historic Los Angeles-area fires, new money to help rebuild and repair schools affected by those fires faster, and another $1.5 billion to go toward fortifying the state against future wildfire threats. It was not immediately clear how soon these proposals would be considered by the Legislature.
"California is organizing a Marshall Plan to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger – including billions in new and accelerated state funding so we can move faster to deliver for the thousands who've lost their homes and livelihoods in these firestorms," Newsom said in a statement Monday. To the people of Los Angeles: We have your back."
The deal has been criticized by some Republicans who feel the state's priority should be focused entirely on the ongoing fire response in Southern California.
"The disconnect between what Californians need and what Democrats are focused on is astounding," said Assemblyman James Gallagher of Yuba City.
But Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener of San Francisco said there is no need to choose between priorities in the special session.
"My GOP colleagues say we have to choose between helping LA recover from wildfires & protecting CA from Trump. But we can do both. Indeed, we must do both, since Trump & co. are threatening federal aide for LA & threatening to deport a big portion of our construction workforce," Wiener said in a post to social media.
Before Newsom's announcement of the expanded legislative agenda, Republicans condemned the special session the governor said he called to "protect California values" amid Trump's return to office, calling it a "waste of money and a waste of time."
Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego) said in a statement following Newsom's announcement Monday that "lumping this emergency response together with a politically motivated special session to sue Trump is unnecessary and, frankly, insulting to those struggling through this disaster."
Newsom and other California government leaders have faced criticism over the response to the Palisades and Eaton fires that have devastated the Los Angeles area.
Trump directed blame for the fires at Newsom, saying in a post to Truth Social that "Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California."

FIRST ON FOX: SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk is donating Starlinks to those in need of Wi-Fi in California amid devastating wildfires that have left residents without internet or cellphone service.
Nonprofit rescue group Grey Bull Rescue met with Musk and first responders over the weekend to help set up the Starlink devices, which connect to satellites, in the Los Angeles area.
"Effective communication is essential in any crisis, war, or disaster—especially in remote and devastated areas where communication infrastructure is destroyed like we see here in California," Grey Bull Rescue Chair Bryan Stern told Fox News Digital in a Monday statement. "Yesterday, Grey Bull Rescue was honored to assist the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD) by securing Starlink mini units to provide them with critical communications in areas devastated by wildfires."
Stern noted, however, that LACFD and other emergency services agencies in California "have been asking for Starlink for quite some time for expressly this type of scenario," but red tape got "in the way of this mission-critical need of effective disaster communications for first responders."
Musk announced the Starlink donations on Jan. 9. On Sunday, the billionaire Tesla founder and CEO said that he would be donating Cybertrucks to impacted areas as well.
"Apologies to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the next few days," he wrote on X, which he owns. "We need to use those trucks as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. A new truck will be delivered end of week."
Grey Bull Rescue said LACFD had requested help with a "mission-critical gap" for internet.

"[Six] hours later, via Grey Bull Rescue, the problem was solved with the gold standard in austere environment communications: Starlink," Stern said. "Hearing about the need, Elon Musk then visited with Grey Bull Rescue and the LACFD at their staging site and personally delivered hundreds more additional Starlink minis, demonstrating his commitment to supporting rescue efforts."

Grey Bull Rescue volunteers rely on Starlink internet for their missions "in some of the most communication-denied environments in the world," Stern said.
Musk also donated numerous Starlinks in the western North Carolina region after Hurricane Helene in late September left thousands without power or internet for days, making it difficult for survivors to contact first responders and loved ones.
"In addition to improving connectivity for first responders, the Grey Bull Rescue team has been on the ground since [day one] of the wildfires, working side by side with first responders to support them in the safe evacuation of residents and delivering critical humanitarian aid," the Grey Bull Rescue chair explained.
"In moments like these, every action and every minute counts. We are committed to helping wherever we can, in any way we can, to assist those who have been impacted by this catastrophic disaster."
The wildfires that have been burning for a week in Southern California have reduced entire neighborhoods to ash and killed at least 24 people. The Palisades Fire, the Eaton Fire and the Hurst Fire were the three active wildfires in L.A. County as of Monday.
I feel so devastated for all these people who lost so much. Because of all this, obviously, I had a really vivid nightmare last night about my home burning up, and I completely flipped my lid in the dream because I had lost all my legal documents, all my other belongings, and then i realized I'd also lost my record collection, and seriously lost my shit..... that really sucked, and then i woke up and after awhile realized how lucky I am that it isn't a reality. Then it made me feel sick that so many people are actually feeling that way in real life x a million. Motherfucker.

I live in the San Francisco area and earlier this morning watched a live press conference by L.A.'s mayor and other officials on TV in which they disputed this spurious story. I've attached the freshly published online news story.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass pushed back against questions about any "animosity" between the incoming Trump administration and California that could hamper efforts to battle the multiple wildfires raging in Los Angeles County.
Trump has heavily criticized leaders in Los Angeles and California over the response to the wildfires, saying the city and state were woefully unprepared.
On Sunday, Bass said she's "not worried" about any supposed animosity between Trump and local officials and said she has been in communication with his team.
Trump on Sunday posted on Truth Social that "incompetent polls" have no idea how to put out the L.A. wildfires. He had previously accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom of caring more about protecting an endangered fish species than protecting the state's residents from wildfires.
The incoming president has long railed against Democrats in California for limiting the availability of water for Californians that comes from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers in the northern part of the state.
Newsom and Los Angeles County supervisor Kathryn Barger have both extended separate invitations to Trump for him to visit the region to see the devastation the fires have caused.
"I joined in the invitation to the incoming president to come to Los Angeles," Bass said during Sunday's press update on the firefighting efforts. "I joined with the supervisor, and the governor and spoke directly with the incoming administration yesterday. It was a fine call."
She added, "There are also, as I mentioned before, a number of my former colleagues who are up for confirmation. I feel like I will have good relations there."
Bass and Barger said they believe Trump will visit the area.
"I will say, knowing what I know, and I represent Altadena, which is probably the most diverse, community, that in the fifth district, this is the exact constituency that he was talking to," said Barger. "You got socioeconomics from all walks of life, and they are suffering. So I am confident that this president will come."
The mayor also took issue with questions about the supposed lack of communication between the city and the incoming Trump administration.
"There isn't a lack of communication between the city of Los Angeles and the incoming Trump administration," she said. "I have spoken with representatives of the incoming administration. I'll be talking more about that in the coming days."

My wife is working with a colleague in Los Angeles who opened their
warehouse as a donation center for those affected by the fires. So Red
Devil is now a donation location for one week.
They are looking for new or used clothing for men, women and children.
If used they ask that you please make sure they are in very good
condition. No stains, holes, etc. This week’s focus is teenage boys
clothing. Again they ask that you please only bring new or nearly new
clothing and shoes. And VISA gift cards if you like. Some people have
only received $15. a day for families of four, which of course is

You can drop off your donations at our store at 894 – 4th
Street in San Rafael this week, today through Sunday during business
hours, 11 to 6. You don’t need an appointment. My wife will box them up

I know many of you know people in Los Angeles that have been affected by
the fires. Though I’ve lived my entire adult life in the Bay Area I was
born and raised in L.A. Almost everybody I know there has been
evacuated.

SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday expanded the special legislative session he called to defend the state's progressive policies against the incoming Trump administration, announcing that legislators would also prioritize addressing the state's wildfire crisis.
Newsom is calling for lawmakers to accelerate $1 billion in emergency response funding for the historic Los Angeles-area fires, new money to help rebuild and repair schools affected by those fires faster, and another $1.5 billion to go toward fortifying the state against future wildfire threats. It was not immediately clear how soon these proposals would be considered by the Legislature.
"California is organizing a Marshall Plan to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger – including billions in new and accelerated state funding so we can move faster to deliver for the thousands who've lost their homes and livelihoods in these firestorms," Newsom said in a statement Monday. To the people of Los Angeles: We have your back."
Just a week out from President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, Newsom's announcement came hours after California Democrats agreed to a $50 million deal to strengthen the state's legal defenses against the incoming administration and help push back against potential mass deportations.
The deal has been criticized by some Republicans who feel the state's priority should be focused entirely on the ongoing fire response in Southern California.
"The disconnect between what Californians need and what Democrats are focused on is astounding," said Assemblyman James Gallagher of Yuba City.
But Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener of San Francisco said there is no need to choose between priorities in the special session.
"My GOP colleagues say we have to choose between helping LA recover from wildfires & protecting CA from Trump. But we can do both. Indeed, we must do both, since Trump & co. are threatening federal aide for LA & threatening to deport a big portion of our construction workforce," Wiener said in a post to social media.
Before Newsom's announcement of the expanded legislative agenda, Republicans condemned the special session the governor said he called to "protect California values" amid Trump's return to office, calling it a "waste of money and a waste of time."
Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego) said in a statement following Newsom's announcement Monday that "lumping this emergency response together with a politically motivated special session to sue Trump is unnecessary and, frankly, insulting to those struggling through this disaster."
Newsom and other California government leaders have faced criticism over the response to the Palisades and Eaton fires that have devastated the Los Angeles area.
In a visit to the fire zone last week, cameras were rolling when Newsom had a tense confrontation with a mother who said her daughter's school had burned down.
Trump directed blame for the fires at Newsom, saying in a post to Truth Social that "Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California."
Newsom's press office quickly responded by refuting that statement, which was among multiple fact-chacked by CBS News Confirmed. In an effort to counter false rumors and misinformation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency reactivated its online rumor response site while California launched its own fire facts site.
In response to wildfire response criticism, Newsom has highlighted how quickly he got a major disaster declaration from President Biden. Other California Democrats have praised Newsom's actions to expedite wildfire recovery efforts.

FIRST ON FOX: SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk is donating Starlinks to those in need of Wi-Fi in California amid devastating wildfires that have left residents without internet or cellphone service.
Nonprofit rescue group Grey Bull Rescue met with Musk and first responders over the weekend to help set up the Starlink devices, which connect to satellites, in the Los Angeles area.
"Effective communication is essential in any crisis, war, or disaster—especially in remote and devastated areas where communication infrastructure is destroyed like we see here in California," Grey Bull Rescue Chair Bryan Stern told Fox News Digital in a Monday statement. "Yesterday, Grey Bull Rescue was honored to assist the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD) by securing Starlink mini units to provide them with critical communications in areas devastated by wildfires."
Stern noted, however, that LACFD and other emergency services agencies in California "have been asking for Starlink for quite some time for expressly this type of scenario," but red tape got "in the way of this mission-critical need of effective disaster communications for first responders."
"Apologies to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the next few days," he wrote on X, which he owns. "We need to use those trucks as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. A new truck will be delivered end of week."
"[Six] hours later, via Grey Bull Rescue, the problem was solved with the gold standard in austere environment communications: Starlink," Stern said. "Hearing about the need, Elon Musk then visited with Grey Bull Rescue and the LACFD at their staging site and personally delivered hundreds more additional Starlink minis, demonstrating his commitment to supporting rescue efforts."
Grey Bull Rescue volunteers rely on Starlink internet for their missions "in some of the most communication-denied environments in the world," Stern said.
Musk also donated numerous Starlinks in the western North Carolina region after Hurricane Helene in late September left thousands without power or internet for days, making it difficult for survivors to contact first responders and loved ones.
"In moments like these, every action and every minute counts. We are committed to helping wherever we can, in any way we can, to assist those who have been impacted by this catastrophic disaster."
The wildfires that have been burning for a week in Southern California have reduced entire neighborhoods to ash and killed at least 24 people. The Palisades Fire, the Eaton Fire and the Hurst Fire were the three active wildfires in L.A. County as of Monday.
What I said wasn't a lie - nothing in the article you posted disputes what I said when I said it, and Trump still hasn't visited, and the only comments have been social media posts ciitcizing politicians and firefighting efforts.
My wife is working with a colleague in Los Angeles who opened their warehouse as a donation center for those affected by the fires. So Red Devil is now a donation location for one week.
They are looking for new or used clothing for men, women and children. If used they ask that you please make sure they are in very good condition. No stains, holes, etc. This week’s focus is teenage boys clothing. Again they ask that you please only bring new or nearly new clothing and shoes. And VISA gift cards if you like. Some people have only received $15. a day for families of four, which of course is ridiculous. The address for those who need help: 31200 La Baya Drive, suite #301, Westlake Village CD.
You can drop off your donations at our store at 894 – 4th Street in San Rafael this week, today through Sunday during business hours, 11 to 6. You don’t need an appointment. My wife will box them up with the donations she receives and send them to L.A. next week.
I know many of you know people in Los Angeles that have been affected by the fires. Though I’ve lived my entire adult life in the Bay Area I was born and raised in L.A. Almost everybody I know there has been evacuated.
