Having a timer like Tool does is very theater-esque and reminds me of someone doing a casino tour. The stuff they do these days makes no sense to me. Let me lock my phone up because Maynard is afraid of cameras. okaayyy. Thankfully PJ aren't that pretentious...0 -

Last time I saw Eels they were joking about it -- "So after this song we're going to go take a little break and act like we're done and then you're going to act like you're begging us to come back out and we'll come back and play a few more ok?" Speaking of cool concepts -- I saw the Sessanta concert last year in Raleigh. James Maynard Keenan's 60th birthday party with Primus, Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Not really a fan of any of the bands but the setup was very cool -- all three lines were on the stage at the same time. Primus would play three songs and then go sit on the couch or play ping pong (still on stage) while perfect circle played three, etc. It felt more natural than the traditional "opener(s) then main act" rock concert format -- felt like we were all just hanging out and the bands would take turns doing these little short three song sets.
Would love to see some more creative format tours like that.Sting did the intertwined show with Peter Gabriel about six years ago that was similar to the Maynard birthday show. No ping pong though, that’s cool.0 -

As far as a set break, I think it could *maybe* improv the way PJ goes about their sets and offer some new variety with maybe something like an acoustic or all album "set", but the way they do it now: mini break that lasts 2:00-5:00 minutes, including an Eddie rant, then some slow songs into the grand finale is uniquely PJ and has been since at least 1993. The "break" doesn't guarantee how many songs follow it.

They are letting their paying customers know that this is a short intermission break. Hard to imagine bands being polite to customers. Unlike some bands that leave you guessing where your seats are at time of purchase.0 -

With respect specifically to the intermission, though, it was perfectly placed. The two halves of the film were an hour and forty-five minutes and an hour and fifty minutes, separated by a fifteen-minute intermission (with an onscreen clock counting down the time). I've seen some other films where the intermission was oddly placed, with one half running much longer than the other half. This one made sense in terms of time and in terms of where it came in the narrative.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -

The intermission of Monty Python and The Holy Grail comes to mind.Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"0 -

The first time I remember seeing a film with an intermission was Kenneth Branagh's 1996 adaptation of Hamlet. It was weird, though, because the film played for about two hours and forty-five minutes before the break, and then for about an hour and fifteen minutes after the break, so it was kind of lopsided. (That film was just over four hours because it did not abridge the text at all.) The movie was great regardless.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -

They likely cut it after half the cans for an intermission, if their projector could handle extra spools.0 -

Whatever the reason is for Tool's phone policy, (Maynard's a pretentious bitch or they don't want shitty bootlegs of their shows out there or they want a better experience for the fans with less distractions... ) who cares? it's a net gain that there aren't a f ton of glowing screens being held in the air between the audience and the stage.
Raconteurs had a no phone policy in 2019 and it was fantastic. Heaven forbid people put their phones away and live in the moment.0 -

So several of my department's colleagues came out as Pearl Jam fans. I guess it took the crazy one (me) to decorate her office with band memorabilia for them to admit they are into the band as well.
One told us of numerous shows he's been to in the 1990s including Lolapalooza. Another of the amazing Fenway 2018 show.
Why am I posting this here? Because I mentioned sorta rumors about a fall leg and maybe finally a show in Detroit (after all those years away) and they all jumped in and said they'll be in if there's a Detroit show.
(Hear that, PJ? You'll get the entire history department from my institution if you do Detroit!)#Grievance20250 -

I'd be fine with the no phone policy as well now that my kids are older. But I can see parents of youngsters having a slight issue with it.
Funny story, a few years ago, Jack White was playing here in Portland. I was not there but had friends who were. My son (who was probably 16-17 at the time) was out with his friends. They got pulled over and because the driver didn't have their license for long enough (not allowed to have anyone but family in the car), they all got brought to the station.
The officer started calling all the kids parents. One of my sons' friends parents were at the Jack White show. When the officer called me he asked if I knew so and so's parents. I told him that I did, but they weren't going to respond to a phone call and explained the situation. I vouched for them and luckily he released the kid to me.
Obviously not a big deal as the kids were older. But even parents that have younger kids with baby sitters I can see being a little hesitant to give up their phones for 2-3 hours. Especially if they are not aware of the policy (which I assume is stated on the ticket?)0
