The DMB discussion here is not off-topic. The point is that their tour is comprehensive and includes many of the cities / venues PJ used to play.

  • I saw Billy Strings this past weekend in Denver. At first I hated the 20 minute break, but thought it would be great for PJ to get back up to 2 hour and 40 min shows. 8pm-9:20pm first set, 20 minute break, 9:40-11pm second set. Essentially get two main sets, would be cool.

Something about not being able to pee during the Even Flow solo.

I saw Sturgill Simpson a few months back -- a friend of mine had an extra ticket. A lot of overlap with that Billy Strings crowd. Talented musicians and all that but probably wouldn't go again.

Anyways his format is he plays for three hours straight no break, no encore, and very little crowd banter. And while I think there are some pros to that I just feel like a break somewhere makes the whole experience better -- go to the bathroom, grab another beer, and get ready for the finale.

The problem with the break or encore is your dealing with everyone else that is going to the bathroom or concessions. PJ's encores are so quick you absolutely risk missing the first song of the encore. I'd much rather head out during a longer song, or a song I don't necessarily care about missing and not have to fight the crowds. But that is just me.

I've gotten pretty good at hitting the bathroom right before the lights go down and then can pretty much hold it in for the next 2.5 hours lol. I typically never go get another beer during the show.

They've made it pretty easy what with the cost nowadays.

Not a fan of the intermission idea.  Feels like we’re drifting from a rock concert to a play.  I’ve never really had an issue making a quick trip to the bathroom or concession stand in 50+ PJ shows.

The whole concept of an encore is so outdated anyways. Last time I saw Eels they were joking about it -- "So after this song we're going to go take a little break and act like we're done and then you're going to act like you're begging us to come back out and we'll come back and play a few more ok?" (paraphrasing but it was funny)

While the intermission is a good excuse to get a beer or go to the bathroom, it's less for you and more for the 60 year old dudes on stage who may also want to go to the bathroom or sit down and get out of the lights for a minute.

DMB fans have it good. I wish i was a fan lol
But then your music tastes would be questionable.
I always thinks it's so bizarre when people say shit like this -- music is so deeply personal for me that I just think it's so weird to judge what someone else likes. I don't personally like DMB but I don't think my musical taste is any better than someone who does because I like PJ -- that just feels like middle school mentality to me.
Counterpoint: It's fun to make fun of bands you don't like and, knowing how tastes vary, you shouldn't take it personally if someone shits on a band you like
I agree you shouldn't take it personally, and I wouldn't. I also wouldn't wanna be around someone who does. And if it's fun for you then fucking rock on, man -- live your best life. I just think it's kid shit and when I stopped having the "only my music is cool" attitude it opened me up to soooo much shit I wasn't allowing myself to like.

I don't really care for DMB but have a lot of respect for him as a musician and for the band as a whole. And there are some bangers in there -- I always like that Two Step song...something about that shuffling bluegrass beat and the melody is really interesting. I saw a post come across my feed recently when he was talking about getting inducted in the HoF and then told a story about the first club they played in and it was really touching...makes you realize how far they've come.

Anyways...how boring would it be if we all liked the same stuff?

It is hard to say anything bad about DMB. They take care of their fans and play a ton of live shows. The only critique I have is that the live shows get boring after about 60 mins. It's like the energizer bunny, they keep going and going without any direction. I do respect them as a live band.

They already have a short break at the end of the first set for them to hit the bathroom and grab a drink.

At a show last year Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age told the crowd told the crowd they weren’t going to do that dog and pony show. I think they were running out of time so they opted to play the full set and not take the break.

I saw Guster doing a bit about this 25 years ago. “Ok the lights are gonna go down and we’re just gonna stand here. You guys pretend we’re out back doing lines off Tommy Lee’s rotating drum riser and cheer loudly for us to come back. And after a couple minutes the lights will come up and we’ll say ‘ok I gueeessss we could do 2 more’”

Soul Coughing last year introduced “the fake last song before a middle song and then the real last song”

Tool used to skip the encore too, they thought it was silly or something... then they got into their 50s and started taking a 15 minute break 3/4 of the way through their shows.

As Charles Barkley said, "Father Time is undefeated".

I do like their clock that tells you how much longer you have before they come back.
