both go under last name? I put Matthew Good Band under M
I put them both under last name. Examples:
L - Mark Lanegan and Mark Lanegan Band I - Jason Isbell and Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
Organized by all the solo albums first, band albums second
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band goes under S. (Springsteen, Bruce)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers goes under P. (Petty, Tom)
Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit goes under I. (Isbell, Jason)
Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings - for live performances (Vedder, Eddie)
Dave Mathews Band goes under D. (Dave)
Matthew Good Band goes under M (Matthew)
Matthew Good goes under G.(Good, Matthew).
As far as technical grammar, that’s probably correct, but i’ve always gone by last name if the name is there, so DMB went under M.
Also, interesting thing i just realized while reading this, i always organized my CDs alphabetical, but my vinyl collection is organized by genre on the shelf. No idea why, but that’s what it is.
CDs are organized alphabetically by artist, and then chronologically within artist. (Official Pearl Jam bootlegs are shelved together, in chronological order, after the rest of the Pearl Jam catalog.)
Leading articles like "The" and "A" are, of course, ignored. We're living in a civilization, people.
Bands named for an individual are alphabetized according to the namesake's last name. So Dave Matthews Band under M. Fun fact: all of Bruce Springsteen's studio albums are credited solely to Bruce Springsteen. The E Street Band is only credited on the live albums. It all goes under S. Exception: Ben Folds Five goes under B. That's a sentence, not a quintet named for Ben Folds.
Franz Ferdinand goes under FR, not FE. They are, of course, a band named for the assassinated archduke, not the archduke's own musical project. And anyway, Ferdinand is not a surname. It's the second in a series of given names, the rest of which are never referenced when naming the ardhduke. This is good to know if you're ever on Jeopardy! and are tempted to answer "Who is Ferdinand?" since the rules require only a surname. You're welcome in advance.
I don't own any Alice Cooper, but he/they are an interesting case. It was originally the name of the band. Later, Vincent Furnier took it as his legal name and continued his career as the solo artist Alice Cooper. Strictly speaking, these should probably be shelved separately under A and C but, as a practical matter, I'd probably put them all under either A or under C.
This doesn't affect alphabetization, but I'll just add a public service announcement that Sade is a band named for its lead singer. It goes under S either way, but a lot of people think they are a solo act. Not so. They have five Grammy nominations in Duo or Group categories (and, weirdly-- 20 years into their career-- one for Female Pop Vocal, which was a solo award).
I'm glad we can have this important conversation here.
Yeah far too good a line-up to be true. No way bands like the Pretenders, Devo, Black Crowes, Elbow, Manic Street Preachers etc are all so low down the bill...
No idea if it's real but they're in alphabetical order
And they're alphabetizing "The" under T.
You can make an OCD diagnosis simply by checking someone's CD towers for that
What kind of monster did not arrange their CD towers in alphabetical order? Seriously though.
But do The Black Crowes go under T or B?
B - non debatable

Articles at the beginning of a name are always ignored unless you are some type of monster.

B. Only psychos use the "The" for alphabetical purposes. Unless you own cd's by The The. Exceptions are required.
But what do you folks do when the proper name is the band name? I.E:
Matthew Good Band, and later, his solo act, Matthew Good
Do both go under G? Or does the band go under M and the solo goes under G?
Exactly and last name
Yes!

There are probably some people out there who have Eagles under "T," not realizing that the band's name is simply Eagles. My heart goes out to these benighted souls, and I pray for them to achieve wisdom.

but for real if you put ANY band starting with “The” in the Ts, you’re a monster.
