Upper Hand

For me, this is the song of the album. It grabbed me right away with it's Pink Floyd influence, beautiful guitar work, and beatles-esque lyrics that are at the same time so Eddie and Pearl Jam. It's going to be so great live!

Clear winner for me too! Grabbed me right away and then I sat there in the dark eager to hear it again with lyrics in the theater.

Really cant wait to hear both. Upper hand, easily top 3 on the album. I keep singing those last lines of Setting Sun though.

I liked the song, too, but I couldn't help thinking about George Costanza trying to achieve "hand" in his relationship with the concert pianist, which I always took as shorthand (no pun intended) for "the upper hand." When she breaks up with him, he yells in disbelief, "But I have hand!" She replies, "And you're gonna need it!"
I gather speed from you fucking with me.
  • From the snippet, Mike's part almost reminded me of Phish, like "You Enjoy Myself." Love that song, but this is gonna be the weird-good one, like "Comes Then Goes."
I don't believe nothin', even if it's true.

I thought of Pink Floyd for the intro.

Yes, totally.  Then the outro gets very Hendrix before Mike starts to rip his solo.  Great song!  Probably my favorite on the album so far!

I was totally thinking Rocket Man for part of this song. And then also a little Pink Floyd in the guitar parts.

This song was really intriguing at the cinema but the song lost me on both listens. Really liked the intro. Need to give this a few more listens to "get it".

This song is fucking awesome! First part felt like nothing as it seems had a baby with a pink floyd song. Chorus is a bit hookier and I found extremely catchy. The ending part was awesome too and reminded me how come back/present tense build at the end. The message was awesome too!

A lot of the songs on this album feel grandiose...building towards a big finish. There were 5 or so songs where I thought "they could close out a set/show with this"

This one really stood out at my record store listening, and then I loved it at the cinema.

That intro feels like an unsettling U2 riff from The Edge over some Pink Floyd vibes. It’s shifts down a bit for the middle but has a Present Tense ending surge that is great. Awesome track.

My thoughts exactly, I thought to myself ‘this could close a set / show’, then I’d hear the next one and go ‘this one could too’.
