I just heard the song on KROQ in L.A., and there was a prerecorded intro from Mike. It specifically said, "Check out our new song 'Dark Matter' on the world-famous KROQ," so it was not something left over from a previous album's promotion.

KROQ barely plays new Pearl Jam. Especially this far after the release

Yes, I've mentioned that several times. KROQ barely plays new anything; it's basically an alternative oldies station that plays a few new songs each hour. In the 1 p.m. hour today, they played two songs that are from the past 12 months (by Cage the Elephant and Bakar) and another that is from February 2023 (by Linkin Park). In the 2 p.m. hour today, they have played three new songs (by Sum 41, Foo Fighters and Green Day). That's why it's noteworthy not only that they're still playing "Dark Matter," but that the band is apparently cooperating with them to get them to play it.
In fairness to KROQ, they don't play a lot of new music because the alt-rock audience is now mostly in its 40s and 50s and, like most people as they get older, they aren't that interested in new music. The people who came of age in the heyday of alt-rock mostly want to relive the '90s and '00s.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they will do tv appearances the week leading up to the release date. Possibly capping the week at SNL. I don't have proof or anything. I know there's the movie that's coming out that week.
The single most cost-efficient thing they can do to sell more albums would be to be to put a hype sticker on The Tortured Poets Department that says, "Also out today on Republic Records: Pearl Jam's Dark Matter."

Can't wait!
