End of the American Republic?

Tim Simmons said:Maybe the centrist Dems, who control the party, should listen to new ideas like maybe those from the “ultra left” who just put up a well liked candidate for the biggest city in America through connection, likability and simple proposals to make their life better.
The ultra left doesn’t have new ideas. Just really bad old ones, leading to the voting trends posted above in formerly strong blue regions.0 -
I feel like things that Mamdani is running on (rent stabilization and better tenants rights, more affordable housing, free busses, city owned grocery in food desert areas, higher minimum wage) are pretty popular policy positions. Especially with young people.
Forget if they are truly workable or not (at the very least, IMO, they are worth chasing even if there are compromises), hes connecting with people. Again, I know NYC dems are not national Dems, but the throughline is there, find issues that appeal to the common person run on it while trying to connect personally.
What would think are better positions for Democrats to run on?0 -

Dems just need to run candidates like this:
A MAGA congressional candidate is facing backlash after spreading conspiracy theories about the deadly flash floods along the Guadalupe River in Texas.
Kandiss Taylor, who is running to represent Georgia in the House of Representatives, posted on X Saturday: “Fake weather. Fake hurricanes. Fake flooding. Fake. Fake. Fake.”
Her bizarre post came as authorities searched for dozens of people thought to have lost their lives in Texas’ flash floods. Of the 30 people confirmed dead so far, at least nine were children, and 27 girls are still missing from Camp Mystic, a riverside Christian camp in Hunt, Texas.

If I were to lose my Medicare, I could be a goner. But maybe not. I'm very stubborn and there are creepy people in this world I would like to see go before I do. We'll see. That's why it's important to make everyday count for something good. Balance out all that evil shit the creeps keep putting out there.

What would think are better positions for Democrats to run on?Interesting op ed from Rep Suozzi, D - NY in WSJ
Comparing the extreme left to the extreme right… Where have I seen this before??
Maybe I change my user name to Rep Suozzi?
….
Zohran Mamdani, the socialist who just won New York’s Democratic mayoral primary, is a charismatic, smart and effective campaigner with whom I disagree. His campaign tapped into the same economic discontent that powered Donald Trump’s rise, and his victory should serve as a loud wake-up call for the Democratic Party.
Mr. Mamdani correctly diagnosed the core issue confronting most Americans: The economy isn’t working for them. They can’t afford housing, health insurance or education for their kids. They’re worried they won’t have enough money to retire. Unfortunately, most Americans perceive that Democrats are too often focused on other issues, such as reproductive rights and LGBT protection
Mr. Mamdani’s campaign made lofty, utopian promises: free public transit, free college tuition, more public housing, sweeping debt cancellation and massive overhauls of systems far beyond his authority, all paid for by huge tax increases. The last thing New York and other blue jurisdictions need is higher taxes. People are already fleeing cities and states with sky-high taxes. The 2030 census will reveal the extent of this shift, leading to these blue states losing even more congressional representation and political power.
There’s another way. Democrats can embrace the need to address the people’s angst about the economy and affordability, without embracing the socialism of Mr. Mamdani or the extremism of Mr. Trump.
According to a recent CNN/SSRS poll, only 35% of registered voters say the Democratic Party represents the middle class. Twenty-nine percent say neither party represents the middle class. This marks a dramatic collapse from 1989, when Democrats held a 23-point advantage on the question of which party best represented middle-class interests. By the time of Mr. Trump’s first victory, that lead had shrunk to 17 points. In 2022, it narrowed to 4 points. In 2025, it’s gone completely.
Mr. Suozzi, a Democrat, represents New York’s Third Congressional District.

I step into this conversation once in awhile. But it is clear no matter which side you are on, that there is much ignorance on how this process works. You want change or a benefit? Write a check, or maybe five. Politicians do not work for free in the US. Sad but true. And even writing that check may not move the needle.0

Ever read the Federalist Papers? Understand factions? And yes the price of admission is much more than that $100 donation. That is throwing money away. Try $20-100 million. Then your policy or rule change might get considered or pushed through.0

Tim Simmons said:From the mamdani perspective , as expressed in that Suozzi op ed, it’s different on the state/local level. If they start raising taxes to pay for an expanded socialist state in NY, many business will start leaving.
His point being, the judge of this, as he said, the blue states will be losing many seats and electoral votes in 2030. There is no clearer expression of opinion than that. Pew can’t touch reality, as good as their polling is. I’ve made that point about declining D State electoral votes on this forum many times.Funny when I get blasted on here for that, incoming (MR) But a highly competent democratic rep makes the same argument? Cmon man.
