End of the American Republic?

They can attempt to start all the fires they want, to use your analogy. And those fires will be extinguished through the checks and balances established since the beginning of our time. The first time our system actually fails we can talk. I don’t pay attention to rhetoric.benjs said:
There's an astonishing amount of smoke around for some people to declare that there's no fire. There's been an astonishing amount of devaluing or ignoring norms. Also an astonishing amount of devaluing or ignoring the law.Tim Simmons said:I guess you have a lot more faith in the system. And hopefully everything he is doing is bullshit and it doesn't affect the country in any meaningful way.
I hope you are right. I am just more pessimistic about this.
But yes, thats what I gather from your stance. You believe people here are handwringing (and you would be right) and you think there is nothing to handwring about.
Even if one doesn't believe the above, a functional democracy must have an informed (and educated) population to make it better (or at least survive). Anyone who criticizes speaking up, should shove it and remind themselves what democracy actually means. The claims around here are not “speaking up”. If you read A Moving Trainwreck and didn’t know any better you would already believe the American Republic has been overthrown. Which is about the funniest crock of shit I have ever seen. By all means protest, I am wondering myself where the masses are? If all of this is happening where are all the people speaking out? No one is protesting. I personally don’t, I focus on myself and my family/friends. But I would appreciate seeing all these keyboard warriors get out there and be heard. After all, our country is being taken, right?0 -
I agree it will prevail and don’t subscribe to it being “the end of the republic”, but I do believe aspects of our society will be fundamentally changed and things will be worse than they have been for many Americans. I think that’s the palpable fear people here are sensing and posting about and they have every right to be worried.battle1 said:j
I believe our system will prevail as always. Is that so hard to understand. By all means be pessimistic, thats your choice, along with the rest of the A Moving Trainwreck posse. Fear yourselves to death for all I care. And I will continue try to remind you all that America will always prevail through checks and balances. Now go back to the regularly scheduled mean orange bad guy coup rhetoric.Tim Simmons said:I guess you have a lot more faith in the system. I agree that aspects will be fundamentally different, at least for the next 4 years. That’s extremely unfortunate, but again, I believe America will overcome. As always. Again, the select few Trainwreckers are posting well beyond “palpable fear”, in my humble opinion. But happy to see we ultimately agree on something and happy to see at least one other person around here believes in our checks and balances.Tim Simmons said:

so when it comes to the president and the courts in a stand off, no matter what level of court, this is how it works as I understand it from this interview:
-court gives president an order
-president defies order
-court holds president in contempt
-DOJ is the enforcement mechanism that would deploy marshals to enforce order (whatever that may look like)
-head of DOJ is a Trump lapdog, refuses to deploy marshals to enforce order
-president does whatever the fuck he wants
look, the founders did an amazing job with the initial setup, tried the best they could to separate powers, but holy mothereverloving fuck, they obviously did not bet on the president being a guy like trump.

I have always kinda thought that they did bet on a guy like Trump but they didn't bet on an entire party of people in the other two branches stepping aside and allowing it. I'm kinda splitting hairs here but I feel like the idea was not to let one branch of government (particularly the President get too much power and assuming that the other two branches would likely want their share of the power enough to stop it.HughFreakingDillon said:so when it comes to the president and the courts in a stand off, no matter what level of court, this is how it works as I understand it from this interview:

this. further I want to point out we weren't set up with parties in mind but the early factions of differing political thoughts on how we were to be set up coalesced around themselves.
