I liked him as governor prior to the bridge thing, however I will never vote for him due to his previous support for Trump. HAVING SAID THAT...liking his campaign and am praying Trump doesn't dodge the debates because Christie will destroy him up there.

I lived in NJ at that time, and I liked him, too. I thought he wasted a ton of political capital supporting TFG, and the whole Bridgegate scandal was gross and petty. And Election Night is pretty late in the game to abandon the orange one, but I'm sticking firmly to my "better late than never" philosophy, because we need everyone we can get onboard.
But, yeah, THAT SAID, when I look at the field, the phrase I keep front and center in my mind is "Compared to what?"
I think Christie is a smart guy. I think he's rational. I don't think he would hand Ukraine over to Putin, pull out of NATO, or load all of the queer people in the country onto truck and haul them away for elimination or re-education. Would I like all of his policies? Probably not. Would I start turning off the TV when he was on there yelling at us? Yeah, sure. BUT: I wouldn't be losing sleep worrying about whether he decided in a fit of pique to start a war, or worrying about which rights he had decided to strip from whom today.
It's a low bar, I admit; but I'm not the person who dug a trench in the bottom of the Grand Canyon and dropped the bar into it. So, since I'm stuck in the stupidest possible timeline, and I'm currently living in a red state where I will have to register as a Republican and vote in the GOP primary if I want to have any impact, I am sizing up the GOP field and looking for the least-worst option. Who could I live with? Who will not try to suspend the Constitution? Whose election would not require me to have an exfil plan to move my kid out of the country to safety? I'll be voting in the GOP primary for someone who meets those very basic requirements; I think Christie could do that.
All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.

Chris Christie is gross and petty and was POOTWH before POOTWH. He made bully politicking acceptable. Fuck him. And he’s not going to sway POOTWH’s base so it’s a total delusional vanity move.

It's possible. The question for so many of these candidates is, WHY? Why are they doing this? Are they delusional? Do they know something we don't? Are they just in it for the grift?
Will Christie peel off MAGA voters? No. I think he *might* know enough about how DOJ works that he sees TFG trying to campaign from behind bars. He -- and others -- might be betting that a conviction would cause some people to abandon TFG.
I think what we need to keep in mind is that TFG is the frontrunner but has not locked up the majority of GOP votes. So it's possible -- although right now, I feel like I'm stuck in a 2015 doom loop -- that the rest of the GOP could unite around another candidate and primary that giant orange ass.
I just want to be clear: I'll be voting for Biden in the general election. But my state will be going red in the general no matter what I do, so my chance to make a difference is in the GOP primary. I want to vote for the least-worst option in that election, and out of the current clown car of candidates, Christie is a front-runner for least-worst option.

I still can't believe tRump even has a remote chance to get the nomination. Totally fucked up

Repub primary voters are mostly hard core cons. Indies won’t come into play until the general. POOTWH’s base is that 35% who has continued to stand by him through it all. The tea partyers, white nationalists, Qanoners and evangelicals are not going to abandon him over the BIGGEST WITCH HUNT IN HISTORY!
Someone who speaks their language needs to do it. Heck, fox “news” even had a hard hitting trump interview about his BS lies regarding his indictment. True most if not all trumpsters will ignore Christie, but SOMEONE from he “inside” needs to do this.
They loved how trump was hard hitting and arrogant in the last few debates. This time, Christie will do that to trump, and the advantage he has is he has the truth on his side.

But does he “speak their language” though? They’ve listened to six or seven years of word salad goobly gook conspiracy theories and now someone who speaks “truth” and has it on their side is going to win over that 35% base that you need in the repub primary? C’mon man!
I get it. Someone needs to go after POOTWH and try to wrest control of the party back from the magat freedom caucus. Yay. However, it’s a fool’s errand, currently, and the only way it goes back is with the imprisonment and/or death of POOTWH and another two POTUS and three or four congressional election cycles of voter rejection of POOTWH and freedom caucus policies. It’s a tall order and I may not live long enough to see it come to fruition. We have to acknowledge that a large portion of the US voting population is okay with evangelical white nationalism policies and waging war on the “other.” And that living under an authoritarian leader they identify with is fine if it gets them their vision of ‘Murica. These folks aren’t going away.
And hardly anyone is talking about that billionaire funded “non-partisan” third party POTUS run that will siphon Bernie voters and indies to either give us POOTWH or more of the same evangelical white nationalist policy. Christie is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Don’t be fooled. He’s talking about how to behave when you disagree with someone? Someone should remind him of bridgegate and his closing of beaches. He’s as petty as they come. Imagine him throwing his weight around in the WH and being questioned by the press. “How dare you.” Fuck him.
Halifix, I really don't get your position here. Would you rather Christie continue supporting Trump?
These people need someone to tell them the truth for once. It's next to impossible to find someone willing to do that in today's GOP. We should be happy someone, albeit someone with a questionable past, is doing it.

Agreed. And what politician doesn’t have a checkered past? People could change, no? I mean , Biden has said some terrible things in the past and was against gay marriage, amongst other questionable stances, but he evolved and changed. Nobody is perfect.

Ehhh.....I cannot go that far with your comparison.
I mean, supporting Trump and continuing to support Trump for years is different from the things you are mentioning. It's a red line for me compared to policy stuff and social stuff that took a lot of people a lot of time to come around to. I can never support someone who supported someone as horrific as Trump..........but I can be happy for them to finally see the light and to try to convince others to do the same though!

No, of course not. But let’s not put him on a pedestal and consider him a saviour because he’s speaking “truth” to delusion. He was all in on POOTWH and would have happily served him in a second term. He’s a bridge too far. And, being in NJ and a former federal prosecutor, he knows all too well POOTWH’s character. He’s a bully opportunist with a narrow view. Fuck him, he’s going to get destroyed down south.

Being happy that he's telling maga republicans the truth about Trump, albeit 8 years too late, is not the same thing as putting him on a pedestal. I think he knows he is going to lose, unless Trump somehow drops out or winds up in prison sooner or later. I think he's trying to bloody him up and make him weaker for the general.
Someone should ask Chris if he supports the house expunging POOTWH’s two impeachments. In fact, a debate moderator should ask all the repub candidates that question.

I did not put Christie on a pedestal, I said that someone needs to forcefully attack trump at the debates, from within the bubble. Someone that has history of speaking the republican language, someone they know , someone who will be forceful and aggressively take down trump lie by lie.

Did I say that you did? I’m noticing a trend in the media to elevate Christy because he’s speaking “truth” to delusion, seemingly forgetting that he was all in on the delusion when it suited him. Everyone who worked on or in the POOTWH administration is tainted with that stink.
Does anyone really believe that a Christy administration’s policies would be all that different from POOTWH’s? If you do, I’ve got a bridge I’ll close in your name.
I will enjoy watching the repubs eat each other and tilt further into delusion because POOTWH is the party favorite.
