Cold/Flu: almost no precautions taken leads to 50,000 US deaths/year. Covid: Much more distancing, making, vaccinating and we still will push 1 million deaths in two years (not to mention long covid, the impacts on other healthcare needs, etc.)

Admittedly, it's difficult to draw a line of exactly where extra precautions should be taken. Common cold? No. Covid Classic? Yes. Covid Delta? Yes? Covid Omicron? Maybe? Future Covids? Hopefully not.

That said, I've learned a lot of things to change that I'll apply regardless of whether we're in a pandemic. Pot lucks; blowing the candles out on birthday cakes, going to work while sick, shaking hands, etc. We were probably far too lax in the good ol' days. I flat out should not have been going to work when sick...and now that it turns out working from home is a breeze, I probably won't under all but very rare circumstances (hopefully not even that). Masks? I don't know...maybe if I have a cold and need to go to the pharmacy, I'll throw it on.  IT'S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. It's OK to feel discomfort. I look forward to laughing at someone calling me a p***y for wearing one. 

I don't think masks are ever going all the way away, though we've certainly learned how much people hate them (and, anecdotally, my experience is that this is not as right-leaning as a sheep like myself might assume...most liberals in my life really want be done with masks. I personally don't mind it...it's a minor inconvenience).

Pot lucks have been gross for many years.  I'm the senior person at work and the teams put them together.  I have to be careful that I don't offend anyone, but I tend to grab the pizza that gets ordered and that's about it.  Maybe I'm being a snob or elitist, but I don't trust food preparation in general.

Many years ago while I was doing my training in hospitals I really upped my handwashing game and became a lot more cautious about what I did with my hands, like opening doors, turning faucets, etc., and noticed a major reduction in the frequency of colds and gastroenteritis, even though I was working with sick people all day. I'll continue to not shake hands and reduce all the points of contact that I can. I'm fine with masks and will probably continue to wear masks for public transit and other crowded indoor places for quite some time, especially in the winter. And yeah, I try to avoid the potlucks at work unless I know the place and can grab my food early. Luckily we don't have them that often - we're all really busy and there's no budget for it

Is seasonal flu eradicated? How about aids? SARS? Or any other type of viral infection disease?

If not 100%, it’s not effective? That’s just dumb. Drunk driving laws? Not effective, get rid of them. And hey! Go out and drunk drive everyone because, well, we can’t stop it 100% anyway. And age limits for guns? Why? You’re not stopping kids from killing others, right? What’s the point? And child proof caps on cleaning chemicals and medicine. Just a pain in the ass. Get rid of them. Out of curiosity, do you think that life insurance companies will raise the rates on or refuse coverage for unvaccinated people in the same way they do for cigarette smokers, alcoholics, and obese people?  

Probably?  If something makes the odds too high of having to pay out, the insurance companies won't want to insure it.   There whole model works on everyone chipping into a pot, but only so many people need to take from the pot.    If unvaxxed people have too great a chance of landing in the hospital, it would tip those scales.

Why would you say "anti-vax idiots?" It's equivalent to "fat idiots." Over 50% of forum users are obese. Why not tell them to slow down on donut, coke and midnight snack consumption? Or mandate calorie intake restrictions. Same thing. Health choices.

Obesity has been on of COVID's biggest issues. Many of the people that have died are obese. It isn't hard to exercise yet people still don't do it. Funny how all of the anti-vax shamers don't go after the obese in the same way. If more people lived a healthier life, many lives could've been saved during this pandemic. Are obese people selfish? They take up hospital beds because of their life choices. They make life decisions to not be healthy much like the unvaccinated make their decision.

Both have all the information they need but still make their own decision to be not be healthy. I am not advocating that everyone starts to shame the obese. To be clear, we shouldn't be shaming either group because it's only going to cause more division. There is a plethora of unhealthy decisions made every day by many of us yet the unvaccinated are the only ones being attacked daily.

and alcoholics choose to be alcoholic and drug addicts choose to be addicted.

thank you. I was about to make that comparison as well, but thought since I'm not one, maybe I shouldn't. 

but what I will say, is there is so much more psychologically going on when it comes to food consumption, it is incredibly ignorant to believe it is simply a matter of will or "just don't go to the fridge at midnight". what a preposterously stupid statement.

The guy on the right is an NDP politician from northern Ontario…he was this on tv yesterday losing his shit over the unvaccinated…I thought he was going to stroke out, look how red his face is?  So unless this dude was bigger at the start of the pandemic, then what has he done to improve his odds if he contracted the virus?  What is he going do just sit around and get jabbed every month while not lifting a finger to help himself…
