    Yesterday morning, NPR reported that U.S. public health data are showing a dramatic drop in deaths from drug overdoses for the first time in decades. Between April 2023 and April 2024, deaths from street drugs are down 10.6%, with some researchers saying that when federal surveys are updated, the decline will be even more pronounced. Such a decline would translate to 20,000 deaths averted.

    With more than 70,000 Americans dying of opioid overdoses in 2020 and numbers rising, the Biden-Harris administration prioritized disrupting the supply of illicit fentanyl and other synthetic drugs. They worked to seize the drugs at ports of entry, sanctioned more than 300 foreign people and agencies engaged in the global trade in illicit drugs, and arrested and prosecuted dozens of high-level Mexican drug traffickers and money launderers. 

    In March 2023 the Biden-Harris administration made naloxone, a medicine that can prevent fatal opioid overdoses, available over the counter. The administration invested more than $82 billion in treatment, and the Department of Health and Human Services worked to get the treatment into the hands of first responders and family members. 

    Addressing the crisis of opioid deaths meant careful, coordinated policies.

    Biden HAD to sell out of the SPR to keep oil prices down during the largest 1-year increase in demand in the history of the planet, which came hot on the heels of TFG brokering the worst oil and gas deal in history (OPEC 2020). Gas would have been $10 a gallon if the SPR hadn't kicked in to cover the reduced imports. That kinda made this not-optional, but mandatory. If I wasn't clear, TFG guy caused the problem in the first place. Kudos to Biden for buying it back cheaper!

    This is part nonsense.  The US uses about 20MM bpd.  I think Biden sold 180MM barrels?  So call it 9 days worth of oil.  Not selling that oil would not have spiked gas to $10 per gallon.  That's absurd.  However, the point around selling high and replenishing at $70 is true and this is what the SPR is for fundamentally.  But no one should pretend it makes a long term difference.  It is designed for issues like Hurricane Sandy and really short term issues.

    It's amazing how much he accomplishes though. Yep, he's old and I'm glad he's stepping aside, but he and his administration get shit done. Do you know the role he played in resolving the port strike? His team is also getting the aid to where it's needed and he's making calls to the people at the top in the states affected while also having to shut down the BS from Trump and his cronies.
